The Great San Diego Comic Con 2009 Adventure …

I can’t remember if it was under the Old or New Republic when things went to a Matty designed handbasket …

Republic

There was a great disturbance in the ratio of human beings to personal space …

Reg Area
Otherwise known as registration.

Morning

6:30 AM – let’s get in line! A theme that will be repeated …

Parking
One more parking space – 6:40 AM …

Strabucks
Would you like some coffee in the morning?

ATM

Or some cashola? Don’t worry, there was a rope separating the Starbucks line from the ATM line because the Starbucks in the Center only takes cash so you need two lines.

People
Of course, not everyone is outside the exhibit area getting coffee or cash … sure, it only seems crowded but it was only like this from 9 AM until 7 PM … BTW, the hall hours are 9 AM to 7 PM.

People2

Of course, there was some important business at the near end of the orbiting twin Sun …

WOC
Day 1 – Preview Night Wednesday. Only those with 4-day passes could buy at Mattel’s booth …and the line was shut off by the time doors actually opened at 6 PM (technically, 5:30ish).

mattel Sales

Not so good for EVERYONE & ANYONE else … especially people who wanted CARS.

Day 2 – Passes with specific time stamps were handed out upstairs but Thursday’s time slots  closed by the early morning.

Mattel Booth

Like the dude in the white baseball cap, you could literally moved several feet every 30-minutes …

Mattel Booth2
You could get in the “generic line” which would feed into the Fast Pass line … aka: the slow line (see line against wall).

Mattel Back Wall

So by Thursday night, there were just a few Rescue Squad Mater’s in hand.

The situation looked grim, hopeless and full of scum and villainy …

But then, Holy Spaceballs – into the fray came Kevin-NascarBronco, Jake-SlicePie and Lynnsaycanyousee-Flik’s Friend* along with Chuki_Mama, Tricia and Monica to save the day!

The moved mountains of comic book guys flab and wedged into line after line after line to fulfill the dreams of wishes of fellow TakeFivers. They were not deterred by things like time-space or some bizarre selling strategy of Mattel from Wednesday to Friday … WE WILL BRING ITEMS TO THE SHOW, WE WILL SHOW YOU A LINE BUT WE WILL NOT SELL YOU ANYTHING!

Fortunately, the three intrepid Kevin-NascarBronco, Jake-SlicePie and Lynnsaycanyousee-Flik’s Friend refused to take no, not selling for an answer and slowly began to build a righteous inventory. Also, with the help of a knight named Martin, they managed to score the holy grail of line-cutting cards …

PassThe Intrepid Three (along with Chuki_Mama & Tricia) went to work.

Intrepid THree

Through blood (literally), sweat (sorry to bring that up) and tears, they brought and bought it all to life so don’t forget to thank them properly!

BNags

AND if that’s not enough, they kept track of every one purchased that required the special blessing of Martin A. …

Bag
And Martin A. signed about a thousand items …

Martin

So, Martin, Kevin Nascar Bronco, Jake SlicePie & Lyndsee Flik’s Friend – you made it all happen.

And with great support from Chuki_Mama, Tricia & Monica who planned and helped execute all the other Take Five events – thanks! (and also for dragging your husbands in as ‘volunteers’ 🙂  ).

Matty

They doled and dished it out. Matty was out like a light ….

Kevin's Truck
After 100 trips to Kevin’s car, they did finally relax on the weekend …

Flik's

Jake

DSC01882

And with Alan Porter, the CARS Comic Book writer …

Alan Porter

So thanks again to Martin, Kevin, Jake, Lyndsee, Monica, Chuki_Mama & Tricia for making it all happen!

Martin Envelope
And that envelope in Martin’s hands … the TakeFive Panel presentation – editing the video in a few days – will be posted soon!

Comic Con
As for me, I’m hit, I’m hit … I’m staggered and may not make much sense for another 72 hours … but I’m trying to sort through photographs …

Final

Is this anything?

I think I need a Vegas vacation … where are you Alvie?

*I’m pretty sure that’s how she spells it. 🙂

Good morning.. Most of the leftover Red Randsberg Rescue Mater sets that I brought back from San Diego are headed to the postoffice right now for everyone. We have a few left over overseas paperwork to finish up and then the entire buy list will have been sent out.

As a final note, these would have been allready sent FROM SDCC as some did, if the USPS preordered boxes had arrived on time and not been a nightmare and delivered 3 days-4 days later while in California. Fighting a bad cold now I will finish the paperwork with Jake online today and get them in the mail today.

  • Bill in Simi Valley, CA says:

    I’m still in line…

  • Just wanted to stop by and thank you guys for being so generous in your support and enthusiasm for the CARS comic, and for welcoming me into the Cars family.

You made the con extra special this year.

BTW did anyone take any photos during the panel on Sunday?

Hope to see you guys again at another show before too long.

(MET: We will try and post a video of the panel soon. Thanks again Alan for your panel time (he was funny and entertaining & gracious) and of course, author of the great CARS comic book … I’m on my way to the comic book store to pick up my latest issues 🙂 ).

    THE TRUTH ABOUT GLEEK:

Many people got more FREE Gleek’s than bought Wonder Twins. On Wednesday, people kept going back up to claim their order was incorrect and missing Gleek, and the idiots at the counter would just throw a handful into their bag. I bumped into one of the local scalpers from Frank & Son’s and he told me that one guy he knew got 6 free Gleeks. My girlfriend waited in line for me when I went to the Hasbro line. For my ONE WonderTwin set they threw THREE Gleeks into the bag. Multiply this by the many scumbags who would go back and claim they never received one, and it’s no wonder they ran out by Friday!! The Mattel booth was so badly handled this year, even after getting my Gleek I still want to quit collecting their products in fear of next years inevitable fiasco! My girlfriend waited in Mattel’s line from open to close on Wednesday without getting to buy anthing because they never capped their line before the show closed like Hasbro and the others did. They did not limit the MOTU art books, and one guy walked away with 25 of them! And please, don’t ask for my extra Gleeks, they are already spoken for. Shame I didn’t get more to share the love with my fellow collectors though.

    • Nascarfan says:

Jake, you and I both know that they capped the line all day long and re-opened it several times over the entire 4 days, we were there and saw it first hand

      • I know, but that isn’t the important part. The part about the extra Gleeks is totally believable. They didn’t have time to sit there and argue with someone over a free add-on item, so they just gave them away. I am sure that part is true.

    You guys rock. WOW.

And I didn’t know cars had a comic book uggh, another thing to find.

(MET: I’m an issue or two behind on the reviews but here’s the last post with links to early posts).

    • You should be able to find these at your local comic book shop. Beware there are 2 different covers for each edition.

      • tricia says:

They will also release all of the first four issues together in one volume. If you look at the Boom Comics website you will see it is coming soon. Just to warn you, they also have incredibles, toy story, and nemo. My kid is hooked. We have to go to the comic book store every Wednesday and they sell out fast here.

I was lucky enough to get my son the sdcc exclusive hardcover autographed at comic con. I got the first book on preview night. There is another 4 comics coming out about radiator springs.

It was coolness at its best!!! Although next year, I am going to add a couple more days…. I would like to see a little more of San Diego than just the Convention Center and the hotel!

    • Hey everyone, the post above is from Nick, the guy I was telling you all about before.

As I previously stated, Nick is a truly awesome guy!! Not only did he bring the Take 5 A Day cake to the BBQ – seen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/30289946@N03/3769758438/

But he also took a trip to Disneyland and picked up the Mini Adventures Micky Mouse Lightning McQueen and Minnie Mouse Sally playset for Lyndsee and myself, as well as some antennae balls for Kevin and a couple other things too.

I wasn’t going to post anything. I just kept looking at the photos thinking how cool it would’ve been to be there. Then I took a close look and I swear one of those Maters has my name on it. I’m over the top excited now. Thanks to all once again for the good work done!

  • Gary UK says:

Wow guys i would just like to say a HUGE thank you from me and my son, i don’t think i would have had the patience to stand in line for as long and as many time as you all did!!
Now i look forward to recieving my Mater’s and Buzz (although i’m begginning to hate toy story 1 + 2, after watching it about 50+ times in the last few weeks. Must be about 3 times a a day lol. Oh well at least i can look forward to the 3d versions).
Anyway a Huge thank you to all you guys again.

  • Monica says:

How funny is the expression on that girl in the pink shirt in line at Starbucks. That’s exactly how I felt in line at that Starbucks.

  • Nascarfan says:

Just got up from about 10.5-11.00 hrs sleep needed….

…from a 14 hr drive, and the last 7 days were catnaps of 1.0 hr and 2hr max catnaps from sorting and buying and more sorting, getting parking 4 hours in advance, hooking up with Chuki mama tricia and the non mattel stuff people asked for

I dont know whos RRMS’s allocated I I have in my den are(see sticky notes in pictures above) is in the red mattel bags/packages but I will get to them as soon as possible. In which we will have to work out shipping costs too, since these are now coming from Utah nd not San Diego as planned.

The huge 1 problem was all of the 12-13 master cases of shipping boxes (350+ indivual boxes)we ordered are here in Utah. We were pretty sure that we could get them BEFORE SDCC but tht didnt happen. (ordered 6-7 weeks in advance) They arrived in Utah at my home the day I got into Los Angeles.

that picture of us 3 shows the Cars Cares session getting them done. Again Im not the Kevin that handles that CCP but it was a get it done thing and we did. I have 3 that need to be redone/resigned and need to contact the people about that. Including getting them sent to Martin and then back to me and then sent to the right people.

If you ordered from Tricia: Buzz Light Years / Transformers…to be sent with RRMsets.. I have your peoples orders. Tricia and her husband Craig were only going to do 1 or 2 passes thru lines and they did alot more than that. About 6 to 8 passes thru lines if not 8 or 10.

I was there from minute one on Wednesday Preview Day-Night (3+hours before SDCC opened actually)with Met and Martin at the Mattel Booth. (I feel like I was checking the shuttle rockets RIGHT BEFORE THEY went off).

The minute the doors opened on Wednesday preview Night and opened every other day after that, the floors LITERALLY SHAKE.

Then met up with Ev and Tricia (wednesday-thursday) and then Thursday thru Sunday with Jake and Lyndsee. We all beat the odds and got them done.

We litterally gave up sleep to find boxes, and grocery bags to get the bulk of these out BEFORE leaving, and stayed and extra day to get them done. And at our own expenses. The 10.00 overcharge doesnt even come close to covering costs. I hope that everyone can appreciate these.

Its a labor of love and yes CD its a “kid in a candy store” to help others but again the nightmare of no shipping boxes was pretty bad.

We didnt even have time to enjoy the Motel 6 pool.

Let alone a decent shower or group breakfast.

We did however get the 1 st Annual 2009 SDCC TFAD BBQ off the ground, (pics coming) THAT was fun…

I have about 540 pictures of 3 cameras to send off too someone.

    • Indykjt says:

Kevin, I’d like to personally thank you, and all the others, for all that you did to get these SDCC Mater sets for everyone here.

I know some people get us confused, but I am NOT the Kevin that traveled all the way to the con, gave up sleep for five plus days, spent countless hours in line, lugged bag after bag, box after box, out to the car, just to get back in line… over and over and over!

THEN, in the middle of all that, take time out to get a bunch of these organized and signed by Martin, all to raise money for Cars Cares, and make some collectors VERY happy!

I don’t know how you guys did it… I am truly in awe of your efforts. Kevin (Nascarfan), you have shown time and time again your willingness to go above and beyond for others, just because you can, and I applaud that!

      THANK YOU!

      • jclimbng says:

I would like to add that Kevin (Nascarfan) usually UNDERSTATES his time and efforts.

Kevin, I hope you had a great time and sometime soon, slip off to one of these event “undercover” without the daunting task of getting cases/cars for all of us around the country and in your own backyard.

Thanks again and see you soon!

        Jon
