Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: The Coca Cola Like-Butter Custom

Now, this is a Classic Custom … Coke Classic that is …

Dustin Side
Dustin should be a pretty straightforward customizing gig – lots of open space but yet on eBay, most seem to be done by customizers who have no sense of white space around a graphic – if the thing measures 2.3 inches, they print out a decal 2.229 inches – and it looks like a**.

These “Coca Cola Dustin Mellows Custom by Diecast Hall of Fame artist Sheri Abbey aka Sheri’s Wheels.is clearly done by a real artist and a real designer.

Back

Simply too nice.

Side Front

Pearly white and shiny red apple topping that is crunchy (and crunky).

Side

It’s also “covered with 3 coats of Urethane Automotive clear…”

Side2
It’s even a ULTRA LIMITED edition of just 20!

It’s classy and sweeeeettttt .. just like the REAL THING made with cane sugar not that corny syrup crap.

Available at CTC and a few other select places online.

Of course, we could use a LOT MORE Dustin’s … repainted – official Mattel release …

    BMW,

I was involved with the intial pitch in order to get the Cars IP. After Mattel got it it went to the Hot Wheels side, I’m in Entertainment.

Then it came to Entertainment, not sure why, and my job was to keep the Line going which I think I have 🙂

The Tractors were part of the intial line so I wasn’t involved. They do look rather strange but typical Pixar perfection. If you look at the Art of Cars Book, my bible, you can see how the Tractors were designed over a real Cow. Same with Frank, and the Bulls in El Materdor. Everything with Pixar evolves from real Life, hence the connection we make in our minds. Lasseter lets us fill in the gaps.

As with the Art I appreciate,”Don’t render everything or the viewer sees nothing, envolve the viewer”.

Just my two cents, what do I know ? 🙂

    Ladies & Gentlecars,

    Tough crowd 🙂

My guess is that you do all your learning on your first attempt to see where the trouble/challenges are and it is most always the hand painted details where you need to use a tiny brush.

Believe me cause I have hand painted many prototypes, probably hundreds in over 27 years here.

However, I know my limitations. When I was working on a Special 1:55 MCQ I went to the Face Design dept pros to get the yellow pinstripe on his rims done. Brandon O. did an awesome job doing something I knew I could never do as well without giving myself a migrane.

I look at these as I view my Fine Art, it’s gotta be right or I don’t let DCP/Pixar even see it……. 🙂

You want to see a hawk eye? His name is John Lasseter.

    • BMW says:

Martin, I don’t know if you designed the Tractors. Tractors are so dumb! But they are some of the nicest characters in the Cars line. Their balance point is precise, I enjoy the way they are weighted, as Tractor tips on his back so easily just like in the movie and makes a nice thud when he lands on his back. Engine compartment and transmission details. Just so well done!

  • BMW says:

I noticed immediately the sloppy paint on the grille, around the windshield, rear lights, etc. No thanks.

Very critical eye………………………it is pretty tough to hand paint those little details.

Now you see what I have to do with every single die cast Character that we release at thousands per casting. Not only the deco, but the sculpt as well 🙂

The the Packaging which is mot my R&R

    • hostile takeover banker says:

Maybe it was a bit harsh especially considering how difficult it is. However, a big part of the reason I buy these Cars is for their artwork and how precise and flawless the detail is on each one. You guys are doing a great job at bringing them to life; keep it up!

  • hostile takeover banker says:

It is not just the paint that has been oversprayed near the rear. There are several sections (front grill, front windscreen, rear taillights) where the paint has run or bled and is not how it should be. IMHO she has done an ok job but for $75 I would expect a lot more, not sloppily applied handpainting, It would make me worried about the other cars. Surely the proto wouldn’t be used for her advertising needs? IMHO there are lots of other Dustin’s she could have covered but to choose Coke? I can’t see the relation to the film.

And also Met what is the legalese for using Coke on a custom like this? I would think one-offs are ok but to make 20 customs and sell them over the internet at such a markup, would seriously anger a big greedy company like Coca Cola. Did/Does Sherry need permission to use registered trademarks like such, especially to make a profit?

(MET: I’m not making any money off these, I’m only passing along info).

  • BBIG MIKE says:

GREAT CUSTOM GLAD TO HAVE IT IN MY COLLECTION

  • Nascarfan says:

Is that “artisic overspray” on the rear door?

  • BigMOCats says:

WOW!! That is too cool, that’s why I bought extra Dustins!! Beer trucks!!!

  • traver says:

thanks everyone for the compliments. Sheri has amazing talent! I apologize if the price is a little on the high side, but, there is going to be more customs coming, maybe even cheaper ones that will not be as limited!

  • Monica says:

What a beut! I love the Coke cans this Summer, Very cute.

  • GotFrank says:

    Amazing work!

  • Indykjt says:

    Sweeeeeet!!! Very nice!!!

  • MackDaddy says:

$75.00! Ouch! A little pricy for my collection. 🙁

    • GotFrank says:

Yeah, that was always my problem with doing customs for trade
or sale. If you value your time making them at banysitter
wages it still doesn’t take long to add up to one pricey die-cast.

  • applefinatic says:

    that takes some talent

  • tuch says:

    Very Nice!!!!

  • LUCA says:

    AWESOME…Great work!

  • Daniel says:

    Very, very nice!

  • John in Missouri says:

    If I had 1/10,000th of her talent…

I bought an older diecast Dr. Pepper truck about this size with the hopes of somehow customizing it, but it still sits in a box in my garage.
