Thanks for your thoughts and feedback on the pre-sell and Kmart CARS day – it’s all been very helpful.
I am the President of Toys and Seasonal Products at Sears Holdings (Sears and Kmart stores and Websites). We were delighted with the success of the pre-sale, but heard that a later start time would be better, and that there were some systems/website issues during the peak.
Given the demand and all the comments on our mySears site, as well as your and other collector sites, my Boys Toys team (Chris, Dan and Vincent) have added extra supply for the online pre-sell.
The “doors” will re-open at 10am CT – Friday June 5th.
(MET: That’s 11 AM ET, 9 AM Mountain & 8 AM PDT)
Depending on what else is happening on the site there may be a slight delay in getting access to the site. Based on your feedback, we have limited purchases to one item per order to satisfy the most number of customers.
We also have our network infrastructure team watching for any network or server access problems. There was a surge during the pre-sale, but we should have enough capacity to handle the traffic. Please let me know if you hear of any issues.
As we prepare for the 6/20 event and future collectors events on-line, I would love to get the communities view of what would make things better, more fun, more exciting or really answer any questions anyone has about what we do. Our goal is to make Kmart and Sears the best place to shop. Let me know what you suggest.

I would like to publicly thank Lorri for helping me get the cars I needed. I would also like to thank Jesterjeff for his kind offer to sell me a case as well. I stressed out yesterday trying to make the purchase but because I never got the email from K-Mart and the case didn’t show up on the search of their website I was left out as were others here. So again thanks for hooking me up, nice way to look out for your fellow board members. On another board I belong to we have a term called CHC, collectors helping collectors, that applies here as well.
We have a wonderful group of people here…I like to call them friends!

Sseriously doubt it. Most orders should ship starting the 20th. I know it took two weeks AFTER the Hot Wheels event for my cases to finally ship.

Hey PD I did notice the pearly color the Canadian ships had. It was pretty neat. I have to admit that the sea-men and women were way more friendlier to my son then the US Navy ship BUT our ship was 3 X the size of the Canadians. Haha!

I meant that Target was such a disaster with their acceptance of orders for the next wave of haulers, only to see each and every order canceled within days of each other.
Target could learn a thing or two about fulfilling orders from Kmart.
I said last year that Kmart did a pretty good job with CARS Day #1, considering that it was a first attempt and they had no idea what turnouts would be like around the country.

Guys, if all goes as planned, I will definitely have an extra case. I don’t want to commit at this point because we are all waiting on the final approval (pending billing and shipment). Because of this site, I don’t have to stand in line at K-mart on daddy’s day weekend… Because of this site (okay, Kevin), my boys and I got the cars we wanted… I am willing to extend the kindness by passing my extra case along at cost when it arrives. All of this again assumes that what we all “ordered” today gets shipped. Thanks be to Kevin and this site!
As a side note, I had two laptops sitting an inch apart. One could NEVER get through to the new link posted from Dev and Kevin. The other got in every time. It was the strangest thing and I knew I would be reading about heartache soon after. I just don’t think K-mart was set up for 400 people to visit their site in a day let alone 30 seconds. 🙂

More to my point on giving feedback I thing you can go back to Mattel and show a newer assortment release has us excited. Nothing against Lightning M but we really have all of those we want already.
If you build it (better variety) we will come. I have no doubt you will sell this case out again even if it is after the Fathers Day event.
I have no problem with one case per order I would prefer two cases (one open, one mint) but the real truth is if you put it out there we will gladly take them out of your warehouse and into our collections.

So if someone were willing to pay $180 and you had a case to sell, would you say no?
Just an FYI, the reason there is a Best Offer is because there is no market reference point for the price. If even one other seller had them listed then I would be able to compare and compete.
In addition, The Buy It Now price was based on fellow Take5 member feedback and the $150 price these cases were selling for last year just a couple weeks after the event… and this year’s case has a much better assortment.

Well it looks as if I know where I stand when it comes to the public opinion.
Let’s make something clear folks, America is still a capitalist society where anyone can buy or sell in any manner they choose. You do not have to agree with it, but at the same time no one is forcing you to buy it either.
For the record, I polled several Take5 members on what prices they thought would be fair, both on eBay and elsewhere, before anything was posted for sale.
The purchases I made fell within the guidelines that were set and every purchase I made was done legitimately. It is not like I was the only person who knew about this so I do not think it is fair that I be slammed for making arrangements to be ready at 5:30am so I could get in on an opportunity that was made available to everyone.
And for those who missed out, I just want you all to know that I did not place a single order the second time around.
So it falls right under rule #4 on the Trading Forum:
4) We believe that everyone values different CARS differently so there is no cap on how much you want list as a selling price for anything for the 1:55 series of CARS & related items here. If you feel some item is listed at too high of a price, just keep scrolling. There is no need to comment on anything you are not willing to pay. It is all relative – for instance, the launchers can sell for as much as 15 EU in Europe (or about $22 USD) so for many of our Europe or international collectors, they might even consider it a bargain 🙂 …

If you are trying to make a living reselling toys, I can respect that. I am a free-market-thinker too.
On the other hand, going around trying to sell something you just bought for $75 at $180 starting price is going to get you some negative commentary from this particular community. Not everyone is entitled to a shot at cheap toys, but everyone is entitled to an opinion. 🙂
I completely agree with you that everyone is entitled to their opinion, but does not give reason to commence a public lynching.
The biggest difference here is that I did not publish my item within “this particular community”, it was published on a completely different “selling” venue.

Why start hyping supposed values before the Cars are even here? There just may be double the cases this year than last year. So there could even be a glut. Won’t know till the 20th gets here.

I know that we are all entitled to our opinion, so here comes mine. While all this hooplah was going on with the opinions of the ebay listing, I was literally in Hillbilly Hell without any internet connection, the only chain restaurant is DQ, the gas station sells farm equipment…anyway you get the picture. The closest KMart is over 100 miles away. You figure in the cost of gas (which is climbing higher by the day), lunch for the family and time, not to mention the fact that some KMarts didn’t participate last time, sold the cases early or didn’t even bother to adhere to the rules. So factoring in all the scenarios that could happen, to me it is worth paying the $180.00 to a reputable ebay seller than to worry about not getting any Cars in the event.

Since I do not think there’s going to be another worthwhile promotion for a long time, here’s a buying hint! I’m not giving up any secrets. I was on and shopping before the anticipated sale. I had other items in my cart, which means I was in the system. When the Cars case became available it was easy to put it in the cart. Then, when you get to final checkout, it is easy to delete any of the items that you do not want. Of course, if everybody does this next time, I think K-Mart will blow up! 🙂
Succeeded with the Recently Viewed Items link from before the first sale went live. Went from out of stock to live at 10:11 CT and I got 3 confirmed orders in 8 minutes. Without that link I couldnt find it through their search box. Same scenario with search box for my “back up” buyer. If you didnt have a link you didnt get in? I was gettin nervous cause I more or less stumbled onto that link a minute before it went live for me. Anybody pull it up without one?
The pre-order case didn’t come up for me in a search on Kmart.com……..only through the link……..and only then after it finally got past the “unavailable” page that popped up repeatedly until about 11:10-11:15 Eastern.

I’m really sorry not everyone got a case, but the “most people who got them are obviously evilbayers” is way off the mark. There have been HUNDREDS of commenters here and on carsthetoys.com talking about this sale, so it’s not unreasable to believe there were a couple thousand people trying to get their hands on 600+ cases.
I tried to purchase starting at 10:40 EST with the links given and came up with out of stock page every time. According to my “Personal Shopper” Mary N. via live chat on the kmart website, the sale began a little after 10:30 EST (not 11:00, as stated by Dev, right here) and sold out in less than 30 minutes, I knew 652 pieces would go fast, but was it a private sale? Email me Dev!
I haven’t seen anyone that was able to order before about 10 minutes after the hour (10:10 Central).
Also, the ad WAS on the front of the Toy page just like Dev said it would be (at least I saw it). Once they were sold out it was taken down.
Nothing appeared for sale out in Washington State until well after 8 AM. I was cruising K-Mart for other items to boost the sale to reach ‘free shipping.’ Most companies have ‘free shipping’ if you meet the criteria, even if the items are not at the same location or mail at the same time. The companies actually take a bath on the multiple packages unless there is a really sweet deal with the shipping company.
I found the Cars sale items did not immediately ‘pop up’ at 8 AM. I kept trying.
Same here, it was 10-12 minutes after 8 before anything worked for me.
Actually my order was confirmed at 10:22 CDT (11:22 EDT) It did go live around a few minutes after Dev emailed me at 11:08 EDT.

I ask because I signed up for the email from Kmart.com earlier this week but to date have not heard directly from them. It was this site & Kevin that let me know when to be online.
Yes, I forwarded the emails I received from Dev to Met. Met contacted Dev directly after that. Dev sent me the direct link this morning at 9:00 am CDT. I posted it here as soon as I could. Then the site went down.
They never sent out emails from KMart.com. The link came directly from the Senior VP of KMart Toys.

Dev emailed me directly yesterday around noon sent me a set of questions, and then I sent him my answers/opinions. He then made the decision based on my comments, Mets comments, and other people’s comments to make the sale this morning at 9 am CT.

I tried paying via Paypal. Checked there and it shows as pending. I don’t understand how some got multiple cases when it was supposed to be a limit of 1 per person.
You had to do a whole new order. Put in password, enter in code, enter in CC security code again. So you had to pay shipping on each one.

Don’t forget that Kmart DOES NOT BILL UNTIL THE CASE SHIPS. So, you wouldn’t see anything, other than “pending”, on PayPal at this point in time. Hope that helps.
I had no trouble but I reset my cache since I figured that would be an issue, bought tons of them and they were available qite a long long time, I was really suprised at how long, my boys are going to be over the moon!

I was able to get the two cases I wanted. I’m really sorry that some people here and at carsthetoys had problems.
On the other hand, I’m glad to be excited about CARS again. It’s been a lean several months.
I think with this post, we gave all the evilbayers too much information, and they bombed the website to snatch them up….. Mayber we were better off under the watchful eye of Kevin as in the previous sale as I had no problems ordering cases on the first buy when it was a random time that no one knew about. Sometimes too much info can be curse, especially here where it looks like they sold through 652 cases in 15 minutes with a limit of one case per purchase.
They would have been gone in 5 minutes if multiples were allowed.

didn’t think i would get one. i had to run out this morning then the battery died in my car (second time in a year) autozone replaced the battery under warranty. got home logged on and got a case at about 11:35am est. got my email confirmation at 11:39am est.

I think you’re way off base. Only 1 case per order, how many orders could you possibly place to be scalping them in 15 minutes.
More generally: I was at the October event last year and about half the guys there were HotWheels collectors looking to resell racers and chase cars to be able to afford more HotWheels gear. Still, everybody had plenty of merchandise to share, and I am hoping that is the same experience I have on 6/20. I have myself, my son, two nephews, friend’s kid, and a family overseas that I shop for, so I’m not going to be “hogging…” but if there is sufficient stock, why wouldn’t I buy the extras and sell online?

One suggestion that I have with respect to the Father’s Day event is that perhaps participating stores can do a bit of advance polling to gauge how much interest they will have on the actual date and allow them to order enough product to meet the demand. Although it wouldn’t be perfect, it would better ensure that no customer (like Uncle Skippy) shows up on time only to find that three people before him grabbed all of the stock, it might also help ensure that no store is stuck with unsold inventory. I’m certain this idea can be refined a bit but, but I’m sure you get the gyst.

Thank you Mr. Mukherjee for taking the time to communicate with us. I think if the Dallas area had some Kmarts I would drive by Walmart and Target to shop there now.
– I would like to know if there is any way Kmart would be able to accept international orders for these cases in the future. I know there are Sears in Canada and Kmarts in Australia.
– Would you consider putting an age limit on the actual store event? I went to the Collector’s Day event last year; and it was pretty obvious that parents were using their 1 and 2-year-old children to gain more Cars for themselves. I believe these toys are recommended for ages 3 and up, and I think that would be a good age limit for this event. If not, then maybe there could be a rule that the child has to be able to select their own Cars “unassisted” by guardians (unless there is a disability involved of course).
– Has there been any consideration for other toy line Collector Days? Examples would be – Star Wars, Transformers(anything but the movie lines), DC action figures, Marvel action figures, Bakugan, Lego, or even Barbie toys. Of course, a Star Wars event would eclipse them all.
– I also would like to note that Mattel has been making some very poor decisions in packing out their Cars case assortments. The new lenticular case is being shipped with no less than 9 Lightning McQueens, and 1 or 2 each of the other vehicles. This causes the shelves to be full of Lightning McQueens, which slows down sales and frustrates collectors in the process. We have yet to get a direct line to Mattel about this situation (that I know of); but hopefully you may be able to bring this up next time you are negotiating buying Cars items. A nicely balanced case assortment will keep things moving a little more smoothly. Maybe even make the case a little heavier on the “First-to-Market” Cars.

Hi cars fans. Anyone willing to help me out with a case. I will be taking my family to an event tomorrow mornin and I’m going to miss out. I went to two Kmarts one local and one not and both I was told they are not having cars day. Anyone in Oregon know of a Kmary having cars day?
The message above shows they care about the customers needs. Unforunatley I won’t benefit.
Anyways, I am a trustworthy person. Have done lots of purchasing from and for people on this site including Met. I should not these are for my son and I know it’s a longshot but thanks in advance if anyone can help.

There is finally another Oregonian admitting to it?! Where in Oregon Mikey? There were several in the Portland metro area, last year I went to the Beaverton one on Murray. I think the Tualatin one also had it.

Hi Lori. I’m new to Oregon as I used to live near the Mattel headquarers in LA and had no trouble finding cars. Just moved to OR 4 months ago and have only found 3 new releases. I went to the Tualatin Kmart and a girl was odering toys and I asked if they were having the cars day and her reply was ” huh, what’s cars day”. I told her and she said no she has never heard of that. The other Kmart was near Molalla. West went to see the navy ships this morning so I did not have a chance to order a case for my son. Well hopefully someone will help me out as some have in the past.
The Beaverton Kmart is for sure having it based on last year. There were a lot of people there. Its on Murray and Tualatin Valley Hwy west of 217 about 1 mi.
Didn’t MET have a recent post that stated that ALL Kmarts would be participating? You may have to re-check with those stores about the 20th. Good luck.
(MET: I’d hesitate to say ALL but almost all should participate – check the spreadsheet but start calling in a few days).
Where’s this year’s spreadsheet of stores? Musta missed in in all the postings!

My comment to the powers that be at Kmart would be to do everything possible to ensure that the stores follow the procedures and that the stores do not just give out the cases early or to their collector friends.
Having missed the cases by mere minutes at 11am last Collector’s Day due to a store giving them out early it is a bit of a sore subject. Was a long ride home to explain to my 4 year old nephew why we were not able to get our ticket to get our Cars…

I would hire you on the spot if I worked for kmart or mattel. You have clearly showed great communication skills, knowledge of the products and an unbelievable ability to multi-task. You clearly have something to offer. I really would love to see you get something out of this. I know that you did this to help fellow collectors and that is obvious but, I think you have gone way beyond just being a help. Pretty awesome.

i could not agree more with the preceeding message!!i’ve been reading all these posts the last few days and have been trying to figure out what nascar(kevin)was gaining from all this? surely there must be something in it for him to go through all this effort (please hold -off on the “airplane” reference I’m trying to be serious)there is simply no way someone would give of their time to help others merely for the sake of helping others does such a person exist anymore? i thought we were all running around scurrying like squirrels to gather as many nuts as we can to hoard for ourselves!!! if it is true and kevin is genuine and sincere in his efforts to help people just because that’s the kind of guy he is (and i do believe it to be true!!) then kudos to you sir!! you serve as an inspiration to us all to lend a helping hand to someone and ask for nothing in return, doing it for the satisfaction it brings to yourself i realize we are talking about toy cars but isn’t there a greater message in there somewhere? okay i’m done

I could not agree more, Kevin has been nothing but helpful and understanding for me here in Australia. Without him my collection would not be nearly as complete as it is. I am very greatfull that he takes his personal time to fulfill others orders like myself without anything extra in exchange.

thanks dev! online is my only avenue for this case since there are zero kmarts in the houston area….and i agree with the above statement – it would be best if the sears retail stores could participate since there are several in and around my area….now if i can just get through tomorrow at the appointed time 🙂

Our local Kmart participated last year but the manager told me today he didn’t know anything about it. He said he would check on it but thought he would know about it if they were participating.

I would like you to know Kevin (NascarFan) has been Kmarts best advocate during this pre-sale. He had little sleep over the past weekend until the first pre-sale. He kept everyone informed not only on this site but others as well. He is helping Cars collectors outside of the Kmart shipping area to acquire a case with no profit.
I live in Dallas and must travel approx. 2 hours for Kmart Cars day on 06/20/09. I contacted several stores to ensure participation to determine which direction we should travel. However, I received vague or no information. Could you please tell me when the stores will have the specific information. I was able to pre-order a case, but I would like my son to experience, what will hopefully be, a great day of fun.
Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to listen to Cars collectors’ concerns and actually acting upon some of the recommendations.
Since Dev asked for suggestions, I would like to suggest that the next CARS day be expanded to include Sears as well as Kmart. My nearest Kmart is 2 hours away. The nearest Sears is 5 minutes.

Yeah good question I was wondering that myself. I am guessing that these will be gone in less than an hour, but I might be wrong. I have seen quite a few upset collectors that did not get in on the first sale.

Dev, has been wonderful and responsive to my comments. He asked for opinions and I gave him my thoughts. He was kind enough to send me several emails, and is now considering doing hot dogs and sodas for the June 20th KMart Collector Day in the stores. What a guy.

Very cool and glad to see the business taking an interest in the masses. We are all very excited for this exclusive and as you can see the pre sale as well. I read that as you can place as many orders as you like, but you have to do it one at a time, that way resellers can’t come in and snatch up 10 cases at a time.

Nobody could get 10 cases at a time the 1st go around. Even the 1st sale was limited to 3 cases per order. Trust me, that will not stop retailers or resellers. It is just a matter of how fast you can point and click.
I understand that I was exaggerating to demonstrate a point. Point being that they want to slow down the process or ordering mass quantities. One thing you should note….People were getting orders canceled for placing them too fast. They were flagged as duplicates and canceled. So it looks like there are a couple of controls in place.

My suggestion would be that KM have a special Cars collector day every month; I would definitely shop there more often if they did.

“We had the presell on wednesday, but it was sold out. The only time it will be available is on June 20. You can either buy it online or go to the store.”
