Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: Mater Variant (Nothing Much)

As variants go, it’s pretty much a nub like announcement but just in case …

The current Mater’s eye plates are a couple ticks whiter than the ones from pre 2010 …

The previous ones had a slight yellow-tan tinge which is no longer there – now much whiter.

It’s true of the Flo’s V8 Cafe version and the new one in the ‘stocking stuffer’ packaging …

(kind of hard to tell through the red packaging) …

Thanks for the heads up, “Nikko.”

    Bah, humbug!

Is this even considered a variant? I checked these two Maters I have and it is hardly different.

(MET: Well, any production change is technically considered a variant but no, I don’t consider it very significant but it’s listed for you to decide if it’s worthy …).

Alex, it seems only the J hook versions of SC Mater have the metal engines. The ones made before Feb 07. The switch happened sometime between Feb and March from metal to plastic. Yes, all later Maters ๐Ÿ™‚ are plastic engine. So not all SC Maters are metal, only the earliest ones.

As I mentioned, The weight difference is about 1 ounce (28.35 grams) lighter for the WOC/ROR/Final Lap Maters.

All the Desert back Maters have the metal engines. Mine weighs 3.1 ounces.

There are some on the fold down hooks as well. The date code is 0897EA, I picked up a couple at big lots a while back. Also not sure if they are still around probably are, but about 8 months or so ago a store here in VA and a few other states called 5 below, got in solid cases of solid metal Mater. All of which were on fold down hooks as well if I am not mistaken. 5 below is a cross between close outs and anything that can be sold below 5 bucks. The whole mater thing though appeared to me that the factory stopped the metal mater all of sudden but had a ton made and didn’t bother shipping them. As I said the stores got in like 36 or so maters all on SC cards all of which were the solid metal. If anyone needs one they might still have them if I look around, they only wanted 3 bucks a piece. But for sure the solid metal mater does exist on a SC card with a fold down hook, you just have to look, but the sure guarantee is to buy the DB version to be safe.

Good stuff. So, SC Mater is the metal one? And subsequent maters are plastic engine and bed?

  • BMW says:

The really big variant for Mater was the switch in manufacturing from the metal engine version in 06 Desert Art Thailand Mater to the plastic metal one in the China made SC Mater. The switch occured between Feb 07 and March 07. Mater’s weight dropped by an ounce from the original Mater.

Mater was changed very early during the Supercharged release Wave 3 from mostly all diecast except for the (tow line and hook which was always plastic) to mostly plastic with the cab portion only remaining diecast.

If you want a SC Mater all metal, look for the ones with the fixed J hook hanger. These are the metal ones. Not the fold down hanger version or a DB Mater.

There is a line around the engine compartment in thelater ROR version which indicates where the cab portion is fitted onto the mostly plastic truck.

Met did a post on this long ago. If you want the original “Heavy Metal” ๐Ÿ™‚ Mater get a early one.

Or possibly Mater was using tinted ViewZeen corrective windshields before…
