Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS2: Countdown Has Begun …

You can start the countdown clock …

In 365 days – give or take a week or so, someone will round a corner to see the FIRST CARS2 CARS … yep, we are no more than 52-54 weeks away …

Merchandising should start to hit in April 2011 … though it probably won’t be as simple as just rounding a corner, more likely, it will be a massive thing you can see from the front door like a FULL SIZED MACK P.O.P. that folds open to reveal the first shipment of 5oo singles, 100 Haulers, 80 playsets, t-shirts with lenticular eyes, Nitroade After Shave, 1:24 scale Lizzie, CARS-shaped Oreos, CARS shaped bottles of Coke and a 100-CAR set of the Speedway of the South track as a ‘classic’ item.* 🙂

(And that’s just the 3 big retailers, I’m sure the Disney Store will become a mini CARS Land in Spring 2011).

And then a few months later – June 24, 2011 – CARS2 in 3D.

Wave II of diecasts will launch then.

* Well, that’s what I’m hoping for.

Well, I know what I’ll be doing June 24, 2011.

(Info from previous posts what we know about CARS2).

it looks like Disney has grabbed all the urls surrounding the title:

CARS 2: World Grand Prix

CARS2-WORLDGRANDPRIX.COM
CARS2WORLDGRANDPRIX.COM
CARSWORLDGRANDPRIX.COM
WORLDGRANDPRIX-MOVIE.COM

And John Lasseter has spilled more of the plot details – that Mater will take over as his crew chief – with the rest of his pit crew follows (Ramone, Flo, Guido, Luigi, Sarge & Mack, presumably Sally will join said pit crew in CARS2 … ALL of the voice talent is returning except for those who have passed on such as Doc Hudson-Paul Newman).

There is 5-part worldwide race called “The Race of Champions.”

First up is a race in Tokyo, starting at Mount Fuji and heading downtown;

Second race is a German course through the Black Forest;

Then “Porto Corsa” in Italy, which is based partly on the Monte Carlo Grand Prix;

Followed by a LeMans-like 24-hour race around Paris;

And finally a thrilling climax in London, approaching Buckingham Palace (where the guards appear to be Land Rovers).

So, we will see a smattering of race cars from drifters/tuners to road rally race cars to Formula 1 to GT and all together in one crazy race in the finale.

Meanwhile, Mater saves the life of a British secret agent called Finn McMissile (an Aston Martin) and becomes embroiled in a huge spy thriller. Only no-one believes him. That too comes to a head at Buckingham Palace.

John L also notes that …CARS 2 … “not just be a racing movie” but also a “Hitchcockian espionage, spy thriller thing.”

The plot, he explained, would see slow-witted tow truck Mater being mistaken for a secret agent while accompanying his friend to Europe.

In keeping with the original, landmarks like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and London’s Big Ben will be adapted as if they existed in a cars-only universe.

    Can’t wait for the movie! Just can’t collect another one. Cars 3 may be out before they finish selling the line from Cars 1. 🙂

  • Steve AKA: Poppa says:

    Mia Dio, Mon Dieu, Mein Gott, My God! Time to sock away some Euros, Pounds and Dollars for a new garage for all the Cars to come! 🙁

  • por356 says:

    Not to be blindly optimistic, but I believe a great author can make the back of a cereal box worth reading. Also, NPR can make otherwise boring subjects fascinating. (Who cares about the digestive habits of earthworms, anyway?) If those things can happen, a couple of brilliant movie making giants can take a semi-interesting story and turn it into blockbuster, especially when it includes all of our favorite characters.

    • Stig McQueen says:

      I agree — plus, John Lassiter is a real car guy. That’s the main reason CARS was so good. He’ll get it right!

      (I’ll never forget the second promo that I saw for CARS. When I saw the first, I thought, “That’s looks like it’ll be a cool movie.” But when I saw the second, where it introduced Paul Newman as Doc Hudson, I knew it was produced by people who “got it” and my expectation went from “cool movie” to “THIS is gonna be GREAT!”)

  • jestrjef says:

    um …. something tells me I have two little ones that will want to go see this … and if everyone else’s little ones are like mine …. every one involved will be making some GREEEEEEEEEEEEN …. as for the Cars that that will come for Cars 2 …. cannot wait to see what the do … classic or lenti …. Store Exclusive or every where …. time will tell ….

  • Mr. T says:

    I am DEFINITELY on board for watching the movie…..

    going to pass on the next line though…….If they can’t finish the first one and even release the Toon line with some sort of consistency…….

    2nd line………What’s that I hear…… tires screeching – people screaming – crash!

    For this collector – (cue Bon Jovi) – “going down……. in a blaze of glory”

    End of the road is coming……

  • Aaron & Jeanne Scriven says:

    I cant wait for this to come out! 🙂 originally it was planned for june 17.. which i know always changes.. but would have been TOTALLY cool! since thats our anniversary! 😀 I seriously doubt this movie will ‘tank’.. it’s easily made it this long.. and with the new one being world wide can only make it bigger! 🙂 but we’ll seeeeeee 🙂 as for the diecast line.. hmm… i’m hopeful that it will continue to be just as popular and fantastic.. but I think the key to that is bringing our GENIUS martin back 🙂 pretty please mattel bring him back to cars .. pleasseeeeeeee 🙂

  • Jack says:

    Well let’s see. Cars is the highest grossing merchandise movie in the history of Disney. Disney, the leader in worldwide family entertainment is making a Cars 2 movie with pixar. The #1 animated movie making company. I think it’s safe to say there will be enough incredibly intelligent movie minds, not to mention every resource and technology available to make a darn good movie.
      Cars gained worldwide interest while completely taking place in America and having only 2 actual races. Not counting Doc showing up the rookie on the dirt track.
      This time they are going global in the movie. Choosing 5 countries that appeal to so many people worldwide. There will be more racetracks and different types of racers, fans, announcers, pit crews and everything else. More Cars, race Cars and races can only help in a movie about Cars.
      I seriously don’t think this movie will bomb. Lightning McQueen will only gain in popularity worldwide. The creative minds behind this movie will not let it bomb. There is simply too much money to be made.
     Yesterday Lightning conquered the country(well he could have anyway) tomorrow he is going to take on the world. I was on the fence for awhile about collecting the second movie Cars but who am I kidding. I am not going anywhere. Bring them on. I could go for 5 more sets of racers and everything else that comes out.
      I am sure Mattel is going to make so many awesome Cars from this movie. They will be making it with collectors on their minds.
      One more note, I like everyone else had been assuming that once they make the first Cars 2 movie Cars that Cars 1 production is done forever. However as a friend pointed out it dosen’t have to. Maybe they want some overlap. Maybe they will still release some original Cars vehicles at the same rime as the  Cars 2 Cars are being released.
      That might be a heck of a marketing ploy. Sell Cars from both movies at the same time for awhile before you the discontinue the first line. This way you get people interested in the second movie buying old Cars and vise versa.
     Either way I can’t wait until the premeire.

  • PirateDad says:

    PirateDad is smiling!

  • scott says:

    bet you all the new movie is going to TANK!also all the cars from first movie will not make it out by than. this is why i gave up.

  • Rich says:

    Well, just to be safe, since the first “Speedway of the South” set was only available to the Hot Wheels Red Line Club Members, I just joined the Hot Wheels Collector’s Club, or should I say the Red Line Hot Wheels Club because if there’s going to be any Special Sets released, then I’ll have an option to purchase them.

    (MET: When MSOS was conceived and executed, CARS was part of Hot Wheels. It’s now part of the Entertainment Division so anything coming now will be part of Matty (like the 1:24’s and hopefully the Clown CARS/Campers …).

    • Nascarfan says:

      and to throw in this: RLC memberships are annual. January to January regardless of what you buy or DONT buy. Even if you join in December of the previous year its only good until the NEXT January

  • pwschuh says:

    Can’t wait for the movie but I don’t think I will be buying any of the diecast.

  • Born2collect says:

    I just hope we see the rest of the cars from the first movie, before the stores are loaded with “Cars 2”.

  • Rich says:

    Ok, here’s a good question if no one thought of this already.
    Met, Since the first film had the “Speedway of the South” set, will there
    be a “Speedway Across the Pond” set that I should be saving my money for?

    Rich

    (MET: Well, anything is possible now 🙂 ).

  • christianscars says:

    Can’t wait. I had NO clue it would be 3-d. If I’m lucky it will hit dvd in nov. 2011 which will be 18 years since baby christian died. I will want something fun on that tough day.

    Afterall I collect the cars in his memory.

  • John in Missouri says:

    I’ve said this before, but they HAVE to have 4 Beetles crossing Abbey Road as they drive through London.

  • deal or no cars says:

    Yeah…. and now single Cars from CARS 2 will sell for 10 – 15$ at WALMART .. I saw that coming since lenticulars started!

  • Monica says:

    Woooooohoooooo!

  • ndemrose says:

    Let’s see…I’ll be taking that day off and pulling my son out of school and together we’re going to the movies! Ka-Chow!

  • clasp99 says:

    Eh, I’ll pass….Who am I kidding! It can’t come soon enough. If the date is correct we will be goint to see this for my sons birthday as it comes out the week after.

  • Laurence says:

    and maybe somewhere along the way they can have an encounter with Professor Fate’s Hannibal Twin 8….now that would be one cool die cast car to add to any collection….especially if they produced it in 1:24 or 1:18 scale….ahhhhh, at least i can dream….a cross-over of Cars 2 with the Great Race….

  • CaptainChunk says:

    This is honestly the first Pixar movie that doesn’t give me a warm fuzzy feeling, I’d hate for it to be their first box office mistake.

    • jmularczyk says:

      I’m with you. It sounds more like a “let’s see how many cars we can cram in this movie to make money on the diecasts” kind of an operation. I will see it because I love every Pixar movie but it sounds pretty weak.

    • kdthomas says:

      I agree…not getting any hopes up about it. Hard to make a great movie better. Toys Story 2 was good though so who knows.

  • mia, tia and njm says:

    Can’t wait for Cars 2. Hope Mattel finishes the diecast lineup from Cars first.
