Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: Team Octane Gain in SoCal

The other day, we posted about the upcoming Team Crew Chiefs & Pitty’s – well, that didn’t take long, “Glenn H.” and “Mariela” already spotted them in SoCal …

The first to arrive is Octane gain and it’s WAY NICER than imagined.

Yea, not just some random Crew Chief but the FIRST “Ford Excursion” Crew Chief …

Most excellent!

Check out Octane Gain Crew Chief’s details – nice shiny bumper, dude!

And if you’re keeping score on the Pitty’s …

So, the Pitty on the right is essentially the same as Stacy Dudley Spare – the singles card release. The middle “Tall” Pitty is the first ever Octane Gain release in that size – the left one is the same body as the one from the Team Hauler release BUT this case contains the first Octane Gain Wide Pitty with a air compressor bolt gun. So in essence, two Pitty’s never released before.

The back of the card does not show any other new releases so the next ones might be a few more weeks or months away …

Thanks for the great pics and find, “Glenn H.” in San Diego and “Mariela” in SoCal.

Happy hunting!

The others scheduled for 2010 …

  • BMW says:

Found the team set on Saturday Feb 20 in Texas.
no paint problems like the previous sets. Only 1 on the shelf. I think its one to a case.

  • Carlos says:

The one in the middle is really Dudley Spare. The whole time they used the wrong body. Finally they fixed it.

    • I guess you are right! I don’t know why they did that when they first released him!

      • Ryan says:

I think they just used the wrong picture on the previous releases is all. No real way to know unless Disney-Pixar says which one is really Dudley. But since they (Mattel) said all along that the wide one is Dudley, that should still be Dudley, regardless of what the picture on the package looked like on the older releases.

  • buckland-blowouts says:

I agree – Don’t know if I should be mad at Mattel for not helpin’ with proper distribution of cars to all store (And countries for that matter – but lets not go there!)

Or if I should be mad at the stores for not being ahead of the game in knowing that the cars cases are all set are not varied like Hot Wheels cases are..

I guess I will have to keep my hate on for Matty – Why?

    ‘Cause…

  • swb says:

i have to say i was all for collecting these and all the haulers but if that was the only new 1 in the case and they will keep putting re-releases the first 3 in these cases i will quit the Cars collecting because it is BS. sorry but my target is so fully stocked with haulers and the first releases of these. some1 at mattel really has no idea what they are doing

  • applefinatic says:

YAY I hope these come soon to my target!

  • racerguy says:

Congrats Glenn and Mariela! Glenn, did you leave any more of these down there? If so, I may make an East County run tonight… πŸ˜‰

  • Dolly says:

Mariela, do you have the DCPI number for this set?? If so, can you tell me wich one is it?

    Thanks,

    Dolly

  • Ryan says:

MET, that’s called an Impact Wrench πŸ™‚

    • DLMcQueen says:

“Impact wrench” is for grease monkeys! “Air Compressor Bolt Gun”-type thingie is the clinical term… Like what them Mr. Goodwrench fellas call it!

  • CaptainChunk says:

So very much want that one. Even for $20 I won’t hesitate to buy two as soon as I see them.

  • 5oclockshadow says:

honestly … What does an SUV really know about racing..

never really noticed before that Dudley had such anger issues..

I may pick some up if they go on sale ..

looks nice though… just get rid of the Piston Cup nights logo..

  • LoolarMcQueen says:

I agree the price seems really excessive. I’ve been holding off – and judging by the way the first three are clogging the shelves, I’d say I’m not the only one.

Four cars at 3.50 is $14 – if I pick up all three sets, that’s $18 I’ve been exploited for – enough to buy FIVE more cars!

Given that the three packs are $11 (3 x 3.50 = 10.50 – 50 cent premium), and the hauler team sets are $20 (one hauler for 12, two extra cars for 3.50 each = 19 – $1 premium), I don’t see the justification for these to be priced so high. Hell, the Christmas set had SIX cars and was 25 (3.50 x 6 = 21), which is a premium of $4 – less than the premium for these sets!

They should clearly be priced at $15. Another buck or two, I can handle, but FIVE bucks? There oughtta be another car in there for that much.

That said, new crew chief style? And the “El Camino” style for Bumper Save coming soon? Man, it’s going to be tough to have the willpower.

    • jestrjef says:

you will not be able to resist …… your inner RACER will not let you …. come to the DARK SIDE ….. muhuhahahaha 😈

    • BMW says:

You have good points, but Mater Saves Christmas was not 25.00 for the set, it was 29.99 same as Boot Camp. At my Targets anyway. If you got it for 25.00 then you got a good deal, unless you got it at 50% after Christmas clearance.

      • LoolarMcQueen says:

I assure you, my memory is flawless, flawless I say!

Okay, I may have gotten that one wrong – but the point still stands, compared to the three packs and the hauler crew sets… It’s a tough pill to swallow to put three pitty box sets in the cart and realize you’re staring at $60.

  • babychristianscars says:

Awesome but ugggh ugggh uggh I guess I have to find team hauler set too. I need all the pitty’s and since the wide pitty without airgun only comes with the hauler set I’ll have to do it.

I love this set, much nicer than I thought. Can’t wait to own them all.

  • moe says:

Looks like 2 of these to a case and the other 4 a repeat maybe. The shelves at all the Target’s around here are full of the last release. These are nice but if Mattel keeps releasing the old ones that don’t sell it will take forever for the new ones to come out. Been searching for these but no show yet.

    • jestrjef says:

I agree ….. they need to be packed more like the Final Lap Cases …. more than HALF NEW product …. say 4 Octane and 2 others πŸ™‚

    • Glenn H. says:

I wasn’t even looking for this when I went to TGT. I was looking for the ever elusive final lap cars. It appeared as they had just restocked because everything was neat and orderly and there was only one Octane Gain set and TONS of the the older three. So, I agree, the new ones ARE going to take forever to surface if the case does contain mostly the older sets.

      • jestrjef says:

Hey Glenn, I sent you an email offering some help! Let me know if you need it!

      • Mariela says:

Same here…wan’t expecting this, but when I saw a different package of the pittys I said “oh no..here we go again” but then saw this one was not the same so I was glad!
Is gonna be easy to spot them for the packaging..

      • kdthomas says:

…or it could have been me πŸ™‚ Whenever I get to the store and they don’t have what I’m looking for I help them out by rearranging the cars to where they should be so they see what to stock in hopes of coming back and finding what I want. Notice I say “want”. I see a lot of people saying they “need” these. I don’t think any of us need these. We need water and food…not cars.

        • moe says:

1 per case would be the worse thing they could do. This just doesn’t make sense if that is true unles someone grabbed the other one. 2 seems more like it but you never know.

        • jestrjef says:

I DO THAT TOO! I hate walking in to Target and seeing the Cars section a complete MESS. The employees don’t EVER seem to clean up the Cars …. things randomly mixed on the pegs … I feel obligated to put everything in the right place just to let them know that SOMEONE if watching them! muhuhahahaha πŸ˜†

        • Mariela says:

And we also rearrange the pegs…looks nice after we are done..! πŸ˜›

  • Aaron & Jeanne Scriven says:

awesome! now HOPEFULLY .. this round doesnt have as many paint issues as the first go around. I LOVE the blue in all the final lap packaging, i seriously think its by far the best so far!

  • jmularczyk says:

    Oh it’s on!

  • Shawn says:

I’ve only seen these for $19.99. That’s $5 per car. At Target, singles are only $3.50. Anything over $14 for these is a rip-off. I can see paying a little more for the Octane Gain set since the chief could be considered mega-size. Maybe $16.

    • John in Missouri says:

Singles only if you consider Lenticulars “singles”. If you look at these as Final Lap ($5.00 each), then the pricing is right on. …although in principal I agree with you, as $5.00 per car is the highest it’s ever been — that’s Walgreen’s territory! πŸ™‚

    • AlbertHinkey says:

People are used to the buy more pay less principal. So pricing these at 19.99 becomes a challenge. That’s actually why I think the first case hasn’t exactly been flying off of the shelves. I have let go of that principal when it comes to collecting these toys. They are just to cool to worry about paying an extra couple of bucks for a special set like this.

    • AlbertHinkey says:

Btw, the 3.50 price is only for the lenticulars (garbage). The final lap cars are 4.99. So including the mega size SUV, you actually are getting a deal.

    • slicepie says:

I can kinda see the point being made here, but not for the right reasons. Comparing a 4-pack against singles is the wrong way to go. A better comparison would be these Crew Chief 4-packs to the Piston Cup Racer 4-Packs, since they are both Target Exclusives and contain the same number of characters, although the price points are seemingly in reverse of what would make sense to the average person.

At $14.99, the Piston Cup Racer packs are a decent deal as far as the price is concerned. But once you factor in that you are really only getting 2 decent cars for your $16+ after taxes, it makes it tough to justify a purchase. And $19.99 for 3 Pitty’s and a Crew Chief – they must take us for idiots, right? Umm, well sort of yes and no. To the average person just picking up a few Cars for their 2 or 3 year old, these aren’t very appealing, but to the collector who has hundreds or maybe even thousands of dollars already invested in collecting this line, the thought of 3 new releases and only 1 duplicate for just over $20 is like winning the lottery. It’s something that has never really happened before and will most likely not happen again outside of these particular 4-Packs.

So why does this work? Well, it’s because good marketing analysts observe, study, and can then predict human behavior. They know that someone will pay $14.99 for 2-3 duplicate racers and 1-2 new ones, because that’s the only way they are packaged. They also know that the casual collector will not be interested in the crew chief packs, but that the more serious collector will gladly shell out the funds for the new releases. A lot of collectors get upset with the way Mattel packages and distributes this line, but all in all it’s a numbers game. They weigh the good vs the bad and when they project that marketing the line in a particular manner will bring more profits in comparison to the customers/collectors it alienates, they are going to take the profit every time. After all, it’s about pleasing the shareholders, not the consumer.

And that’s the mark of brilliant marketing, it changes the norm and pushes the limits all the time, and the brains at Mattel have done a pretty good job in both categories.

Simply AWESOME DUDE!! Love that one of the pitty’s has a TOOL!! SWEEEEEEEEEET!! πŸ™‚

  • Edge says:

    To paraphrase Luca:

    NEED!!!!!!

  • I can’t wait to get this when I find it!

  • Kevin W says:

I am so happy that they are varying the crew chiefs. That really makes for a more interesting line. Have we seen this crew chief’s body elsewhere? Security maybe? Off roading perhaps?

Great score! Hoping someone can start finding a bunch of these for us Aussies. This is yet another line that hasn’t shown up downunder.
