But look on the outside and see if there’s a date code stamp or as reported by some earlier, a XXX of XXX number on the outside? Maybe a pattern will eventually emerge?

UPDATE: So, far, the really bad cases are #330, #346, #351 & #383 …and the still off but not quite so off cases including #478.

For those wondering where the number is – it’s on the right hand side of what apparently looks like a Kmart internal label & number count …

807 Label

ABOVE THE 7840 – right hand side. This one reads 496/807.

As others have noted, this does not necessarily correspond to any Mattel production number but instead,these are basically “re-labeled” as they come off the pallet but it looks like the likelihood of problems so far look like it’s at least #330 to #383. Right now, we cannot say if it’s every case from (say) #320 to #400? But that looks to be the most problematic range though #478 is also off but not as badly …

    I did use this 11.00 case check charge that some people paid to buy these items and get these cases fixed.

    the ones that I did buy this time (even the ones that I needed at 2x the actual costs PLUS shipping) were to correct cases for other people that got here with the wrong contents. Even driving around town here looking for the correct ones.

    Some were not interested in helping at costs, wanted higher prices yet, so I looked elsewhere…I am fine with that. “Good luck on your sales”

    I opened and checked 47 cases, 8 were bad and now thanks to people that sold them at near costs OR twice the costs ALL but 3 of my cases are now fixed.

    Only 3 cases of mine went out bad. They chose not to care for various reasons, BUT, I did make sure that they got a perfect case along with that bad one.

    Kmart case # 697 that has 2 No Stall and no Lil Torquey in it.. The rest of the case is correct with that 1 flaw.

    I don’t want to harp on the subject but I still haven’t gotten my case. It’s getting a bit tiresome seeing everyone else, one after the other, saying they got their case/cases. I wonder if I can just cancel the order.

    I got my case today. It was correct but there aren’t any id numbers (xxx of xxx) on the shipping label. It is a standard UPS label. the Mattel case came shipped in a second bigger box filled with packing peanuts – joy :()

    the Mattel case did come with the 165/9/p04 on it like others have mentioned.

    Got my case today from KMART. No problems. No sticker on the outside with date stamp. But had the 165/9/P04 on sticker with Mattel logo.

    As far as identifying case numbers, my two shipping boxes have nothing indicating “case # of total case #”. The cases themselves have the standard Kmart Cars event information, nothing more.

    Two boxes arrived, one with 2 cases, the other with 6. Nothing other than the standard white UPS shipping label to retrieve any information from.

    So, I can’t help with case #’s, but it looks like all cases are correct.

    I had 3 cases— 228 and 245 were correct but case 231 was not it has 2 mcqueens 2 pattis and 2 todds — no mini or vitoline and 3 mood springs

  • My second order of 4 cases arrived today. Just like the first order shipment I received yesterday, each case was packed in a separate shipping box.

    3 correct cases. 1 incorrect case. 🙁

    Well…….the bulk of the Kmart Cases should arrive today.

    a least 32 are scheduled. 22 from yesterday were delayed. (maybe they need two trucks? or a BIG truck?)

    For those wondering… Kmart Customer Service will issue a Call Tag to pick up the error case, return to their warehouse and credit your charge card…

    Click on the email link to provide them with your order information and they will respond rather quickly.

    I requested my Call Tag today and will update when there is something to update.

    If they issue the Call Tag directly with UPS, I’ll have to be home when the driver comes here. When I was working, UPS would arrive with the Tag and take the merchandise… not sure if they would leave the label on my door if not home to pick up at a later time… I’ll advise when I know more.

        I hope not for the sake of the next guy… hopefully the return will be sent to the stores… at least there are a few good ones there that won’t sit on the pegs…

        I was going to keep them and use for trading, but my patient wife saw how much was spent on these and persuaded me to return the incorrect case… I tried to tell her I spent far less than some… I lost… oh well…

    Lorri, if its “checked and wrong”, well its wrong. I wont be scavenging other boxes to make it right. The error ones are error ones but do have some of the good stuff, just not all of it.

Afterall, I can’t do much about the recession, Chris Brown’s dating habits, or losing the trailer back to the bank, but boy I can sure go bonkers about K-Mart and Mattel!!

    I got case 312 today and it was correct. I am waiting to see if the 3 other cases I ordered come in after the whole paypal fiasco, so I will update when/if they come in.

    Look at the pictures in the post above. There is a picture of a white label that is green on the bottom. Right above where the white meets the green on the right side of the label is a ###/807.

    Mattel never guarantees case contents. Pre ordering cases has always been risky. remember the days of ordering whole Desert Back cases of 35 cars in HOPE that one Sarge would be in the case???

    Well I have mixed feelings about the “checking first” thing. What if you check first and its wrong? are you supposed to change out the cars to make it “right”? But they you would be scavenging from cases that others paid for. For me personally I ordered a few extras for people who for whatever reason were not able to order them directly for themselves. And who did not want to pay double from a reseller. I am not making a penny, potentially will be in the hole if shipping estimator is off.
    I think everyone who could order one for themselves, did. Those that couldnt had a lot of choices. I say if I open it and its wrong, they get the choice of “yes send as is” or “no thanks keep it”. No repacking. Maybe the most fair is ship it blind, unless it looks obviously tampered with.
    I think it is completely different when there is a big profit involved. Profit is built in to counter the risk of returns, extra labor, etc.
    What does everyone else think?

      I agree Lorri…I bought 3 cases and had them shipped to chuki_mama, she was nice enought o open them adn I was only off by 2 cars…one of which she was able to fill and the other Samuel filled in…but at my expense, my risk, my loss….Buyer beware, and be thankful you got ANY!!!

    mmathie, I don’t think that the good cases went to the first people to order. I was with Nascarnbroncosfan when he opened his. 2 of the 9 he opened were not correct.

    He would have ordered them all at the same time. If it would have been a first come first serve thing all of his would have been good or all of his would have been bad. It is completely random. It looks like around 20% of the cases are not correct. And because, in general, the majority of them seem to be the same (I.E. missing the same cars, with three McQueens, three Pattys, a Greta etc), I do think it was Mattel packing them that way intentionally to get rid of excess cars.

    That whole, “ran out” thing is probably just a person at Kmart who didn’t know what else to say. So anyway, if you got four cases, it would be a safe bet that one will be incorrect, hopefully you get lucky.

        Everybodies order got put on “Manual Input” when the whole mess of computer generated emails happened.

        I ordered in the first few seconds of going live on Presale #1… 12, 3 pcs orders. Only half of them showed up so far.

        same with presales #2 wife ordered 8 withing the first 90 seconds..

    The cases that I opened at Kmart day were correct, but they do not have #’s on them, I have 2 of them…just the 0929EA stamp…it appeared that all 12 were correct assortments…

    Update on my messed up case – I took it to K-mart this evening, and they let me trade out for what they had in stock straight across. I got my Shifty Drug and Vitoline Pitty, plus picked up another Todd (sorry 3 Patti extras, I’m just not as in love with you), a Bumper Save and a Mood Springs. I bet this wouldn’t have been possible if they had advertised the event. Their pegs were nice and full of event cars.

    BMW, my point is…I ordered plenty ahead of others posting here on TakeFive on the 3rd…I just think it’s crap that they didn’t ship first come first serve. I emailed K-mart and they themselves stated: “the allotment ran out when your orders were placed and it was first come first serve” That is total BS…since you know what…I ordered another 2 cases about 30 minutes later as well as many other TFAD members posted that they ordered AFTER me…how can they flat out lie this way?

    On top of it all, when I DO get my 4 cases…I know…I just know I’ll get the shaft and have the incorrect assortments.

    MMatthie, you may have ordered at 7:15 CDT, but there are quite a few of us who ordered at 4:50 am CDT on the 3rd.

    I know a lot of Texas people who got their orders last Friday, but did not use paypal. Maybe they did ship to farther locales first, don’t know why they would. My June 3rd and June 5th orders both came last Friday.
    so the order date seems to not make any difference.

    I ordered on day one, I know for a fact that people that ordered on the 2nd day received the correct case and I did not. I’m almost over this whole messed up case thing. When will I learn, Mattel………………………………………………… better not type that out I would be band from this site. Anyways Mattel just robbed me.
    Did the Kmart site say subject to allocation? I do not remember.

    Kmart told me on the phone that all cases have shipped but that their system is behind since this was set up special and that their regular emails etc tracking info isnt correct but in the real world all cases purchased have shipped and were in stock no matter what their system says

    was trying to brainstorm to make everyone happy and get at least paid something for my time. I never really asked for anything but a tic over costs the first 2 pre-orders.

    So I guess if you are fine with a surcharge of 11.00 (went middle of the road from 10.00 and 12.00 so be it.

    the total vote on this is NOT in but, the damm thought scares me….

    WHAT IF the OTHER 61-62 cases are going to be in error?

    Again, I wanted to put the suggestion out there and NOT leave everyone hanging.

    It will be first come first serve.

    I just cannot think of anyway to get around it other than DO NOTHING and send -em as I get -em

    they were not sent in order that they were received…. I know this because I sent a few orders to myself first and then my last order of the day I sent to my parents house in texas…. the texas order was dropped off by UPS last friday and I am still waiting on mine.

    I think the reasoning was send out the orders that are farthest away from the Naperville illinois shipping plant and then send out the second wave to those that are nearer?

    Listen,
    I think Nascar has a point he can’t be expected to open all of the cases. The overseas people have to take their chances like everyone else did. They get what they get then they can then trade for what they need.

    Nascar should be applauded for the mythical effort he has been undertaking.

    It seems to me in most cases the one that are missing are the ones that have already been released. Bumper save, shifty drug, etc.. Also in the 12 cases at my Kmart I saw no bad cases.

    Nascar if anyone back out let me know I would be interested in a case (unopened)

    Shall I assume my 359 box is screwed up and just send it back or have my father open it first?

    (MET: It’s in the danger zone but only you/he can tell us (after it’s opened) if it’s everything in that range or again, just random … But if he lives in an area where the Kmart’s still have extras on the shelf … you can swap them (or he can) … I’m not sure they’ll pay for shipping back on a hunch you think it might be wrong – just my guess so it might cost you $8 dollars to mail it back …).

    Get this…I ordered my cases on the firt preorder day…and literally was the 2nd or 3rd post on the TakeFive thread dedicated to the topic and guess what mine are scheduled for 6/29 as well.

    It’s total crap…check the post, I’m there…I literally ordered around 7:15am CST on 6/3…

    So much for first come first served. I mean how can my early order not have shipped first???

      Considering all you need is a box opener and a couple minutes to check each one, don’t you think $300 per hour is a pretty high wage to just open and check the contents of a box? That’s my opinion.

      • That’s exactly the point. Set a price that is too high to deter anyone from using it, and if they want it that bad, then they’ll pay for it.

          Well, at this stage of the game, having been collecting, trading and selling as long as you have, if you still need to completely remove them from the box to check & see if each one is the correct one, than I guess $300 per hour is not so bad, considering how long it might take you to go through a box. NOT.
          If you’re going to go through each box that way, then why not just repack the boxes that were not correct with the correct allotment, ship out the corrected boxes to those who ordered from you on a “first paid, first served” basis, repack the remaining “leftover” cars and return those. Call it done.
          The fact that you’re handling each box the way you say you are, and then asking buyers to go ahead and buy a “mispacked” box, what’s that about? EVERYONE who preordered from you did so on the assumption that the boxes would be packed with the cars from the list shown on this blog. And Absolutely it’s no ones fault for mis packed cases but Mattels. But THAT’S NOT THE POINT. The point is, those people expect the correct case. If you’re checking each one by pulling out each car, than re-pack them correctly if needed and return the rest or sell the singles. It seems a bit strange to tell someone they’re sort of playing the lottery with case content when in fact you’ve alredy checked them and know the boxes are wrong. And you certainly can’t expect someone to pay the SAME amount for a mispacked case that YOU’VE already checked then someone is paying for the correct case.
          I would say that you are doing a heck of a favor to EVERYONE who responded to your offer of buying these cases for them. No one is disputing your kindness in the offer. But unfortunately, Mattel sort-of “screwed the pooch” here, and well, I hate to say it but you’re the one wearing the collar. But that was the risk you took when you decided to “be nice” and help everyone out. If you had left all the cases sealed, that would be one thing. But the moment you opened them, took out each car to inspect them, (a complete waste of time in my opinion) and repacked them, then in my opinion it became YOUR responsibility to make sure the cases were correct. And if that meant 20% of the orders you had couldn’t be fulfilled, then so be it. You offer what’s left to those who didn’t get a full correct case and return what’s left.
          I want to say that I think you are one of the most generous people on this blog, by far. You certainly are one of the most knowledgeable and respected “members”. I’m sorry the Mattel employee(s) couldn’t pack ALL the boxes correctly. Would have made life so much easier. But they didn’t. Fix as many as you can, fulfill as many orders as you can and make as many people happy as you can. Wouldn’t you say that was the “spirit” of the whole event?

            I guess you missed the part where I DID REPACK THEM correctly.

            I guess you missed the part where THEY didnt care what they got since that is WHAT THEY WANTED.(ebay singles resellers, customizers and people who had 6 kids wanted the messed up cases, they didnt care)

            I did NOT check each one head of time, only as a request. PER CASE by case basis…

            Pulling them out to BE 100% sure is 100% sure. (too much color similarity)

            I do expect someone to pay the same amount. after all we all NEVER expected this huge variation. BUT if you want me to CHECK AND give you 100 sureity, thus the 11.00 charge.

            that 11.00 charge went back into the tfad group (and then some)

            mispacked extras went to Toys for Tots.

            No Returns to kmart.

            EVERYONE who preordered from you did so on the assumption that the boxes would be packed with the cars from the list shown on this blog.

            You have missed the point. Kevin did not agree to sell everyone 18 specific Cars. He agreed to order a factory sealed case for anyone who needed help.

            And you certainly can’t expect someone to pay the SAME amount for a mispacked case that YOU’VE already checked then someone is paying for the correct case.

            Yes he can, especially when there was virtually no profit being made. Kevin has absolutely zero obligation to fix any incorrect cases, but decided to do so anyway, and the additional $11 charged to check the cases was used to buy the replacement Cars, some at double or triple cost because that was the only way for him to get them.

            Anyone who is a collector should know that any product that is labeled as an assortment – which these are regardless of the stated content – carries an inherent risk and the buyer assumes that risk upon purchase. Kevin went above and beyond by checking those cases and should be compensated for his time.

            The “spirit” of the event, as you call it, has turned into an absolute nightmare for him and he has still managed to fight his way through. I say Kudos to Kevin for doing what he did. This is America so everyone is entitled to their opinions, but I challenge anyone who disagrees with what Kevin has done take on the same responsibility next time. I would be very surprised if anyone else were to step up.

            I did use this 11.00 case check charge that some people paid to buy these items and get these cases fixed.

            the ones that I did buy this time (even the ones that I needed at 2x the actual costs PLUS shipping) were to correct cases for other people that got here with the wrong contents. Even driving around town here looking for the correct ones.

            Some were not interested in helping at costs, wanted higher prices yet, so I looked elsewhere…I am fine with that. “Good luck on your sales”

            I opened and checked 47 cases, 8 were bad and now thanks to people that sold them at near costs OR twice the costs ALL but 3 of my cases are now fixed.

            Only 3 cases of mine went out bad. They chose not to care for various reasons, BUT, I did make sure that they got a perfect case along with that bad one.

                TJH, I think you’re assuming Nascarfan is just whipping a quick box cutter through a box, and then passing along to the people who ordered from him whether or not they are getting a correct case. That is an incorrect assumption.

                I was at his house picking up some cars that he had got for me, when the boxes came. To say that the amount of boxes was overwhelming would be understating it. They were full of peanuts (that were blowing all over his yard). This was a large undertaking that he did for nothing.

                Kevin has a great heart and genuinely wants to help people fulfill their collections. My kids have met him twice and always ask about him because whenever he sees them he always gives them a car.

                I wouldn’t open a big box, work my way through all the peanuts, find the 20% of the cases that are bad, seperate them, work through my network to try to make them right, re-pack the boxes, got to the post office, mail them out across the world, clean up all the peanuts, load all the ridiculous boxes into my truck, and find somewhere to dump them for $11 bucks.

                My point would be to be careful on calling someone out until you have all the information.

    Nascar, while I didn’t order a case from you it doesn’t seem right to charge a fee to open a box (especially not $10-12). Yes it stinks that not all the cases are correct but if you were a store and someone came in to buy a case you would sell it as is (“assortment subject to change”)

    When I got “the Call,” they combined all of mine into the order number from the first day. People that ordered on the second day have already gotten theirs. WTH?

    There are a large number of issues to work out before the next Kmart day for Dev and his crew!!

    John….since I can’t reply to your thread, I did see a Greta at the event I want too so who knows. I was not watching them when they took all of the contents out of the case and dumped them on the table for the free for all. But I would assume that it is like the one above with Greta, I would have been pissed though if that would have been the case I opened!

    Received my 24 cases today, via UPS, right to my door in Canada, and they were PERFECT, except it was a dream and they did not ship to Canada, so I am paiently waiting for them to arrive in WA to then be sent to me…yeah, I know, I should have had them sent to MI…waht was I thinking!?!? Thanks chuki_mama!!! And it is only 2 cases, not 24…hee hee, wishful thinking!

    To try and make everybody happy…..

    An Offer:

    Something to the effect of 10.00 or a 12.00 charge for EACH CASE a person orders “CHECK AND MAKING SURE charge”.

    OR I leave them ALL sealed, (except these 9) EVERYBODY you get what you get.

    OR… if you dont care which ones you get I will send out ERROR cases FIRST to those that dont care, OR FIRST for those that WANT the error ones for resale etc… NO EXTRA CHARGE.

    Until I run out of Cases. THEN RE-OFFER them when I run out?? I didnt order any extras….is the only problem.

    I just dont need 68 cases (sent out 3 allready) to get stuck with.

    I am trying to come up with solutions.

    Returns take time and I can afford the return refund thing. I am NOT a major retailer….just trying to get my friends overseas, what they couldnt get.

    Thoughts?..

    As most will know… I received one good, one “oddball” assortment.

    Case 346/807 was incorrect… it contained the following:

    4x Mood Springs
    4x Patti
    1x Todd
    1x Chase Mario
    1x Bumper Save
    1x Vitoline Pitty
    1x Easy Idle
    1x Andrea
    4x Lightning McQueen

    As a side note… I contacted Kmart Customer Service… they are going to issue a return ticket to have UPS pick up the error case and credit my charge card. Since I was able to put together what I needed at the Kmart Event and through some fabulous Take 5 Members I’m just going to return the case and go wait till the next Collector Day Presale Event and hope for the best there!

    Got the correct case with the correct contents today, but my case was already opened. Whoever opened it (Kmart) didn’t even tape it back up. They just tucked the top flaps onto each other to close the box. Anyone else?

    Were these error cases only in the presale? At least at my Kmart, I don’t think any of the 24 cases had problems. I base this only on the fact that I was the last one there, and after organizing all the extra’s on the table, there were no Greta’s or Andrea’s.

    I got with pre sale and with 5 stores visits saturday 86 cases, I did not see one error in the bunch so far, I havent opened all the cases but I have over half and all is well here in NC

    Well, since the poll does not work properly I received 6 cases and each one was correct even down to the exact location of each car in the case. All the numbers were in the 590 – low 600 out of 807.

    The ones that are missing are: Vitoline Pitty, Mini, Retread, Nostall, and both Shifty Drugs.

    They are replaced with two extra McQueens, two extra Pattys, and a Greta

  • I received 12 of 36 cases today. They came in 4 large boxes, each containing 3 cases. 3 boxes were packed with the air-filled bubble pouches and the 4th was filled with peanuts. SO going against what I previously stated, I checked each of the 12 cases to see if the contents were correct.

    11 cases were correct and 1 was incorrect. This is the assortment of the incorrect case in order still in the box and each with its respective production code:

    Row 1:
    Mood Springs 0829, Mood Springs 0829, Lightning McQueen 0759, Todd N/A, Patti 0519, Easy Idle 0519
    Row 2:
    Lil’ Torquey Pistons 0829, Tow Cap 0829, Mario (Chase) 0619, Bumper Save 0829, Bumper Save 0829, Clutch Aid 0519

    The # on the green and white sticker reads 711/807. The solid green sticker has a received date of 2454994.76172 with a received quantity of 499.

    Also, for those in Panic Mode due to non-receipt of a shipping email from KMart – DO NOT PANIC! I did not receive an email either and came home today to find the UPS tag on my door. Fortunately, the UPS driver decided to make one more swing by and saw my car so he stopped and delivered them.

    One last thing, in one case I did find the Vitoline Error with Easy Idle tires and toolbox, so I swapped it out for a correct one. Sorry Brown Fury and Shelby, but I no longer need to trade for or buy it.

    Met, is there anyway to see the percentages? I was there when Kevin opened the boxes. So far it seems that 15-20% of the boxes are coming with cars we didn’t think would be in them. I would be interested to see if that holds up.

    Also, I couldn’t respond to the poll twice. I got two correct boxes, but was only able to put in for one of them.

    (MET: Right now, it looks like about 30 are okay and 7 are bad (counting emails & Kevin’s visuals) … the poll “setting” is at “zero” which means you should be able to enter your choice again … maybe try again in a few minutes, let me know if that works. Sorry if it’s not letting you).

    I know one of the cases that was opened at the Kmart I was at had a Greta in it…..I did not see though what was left out because of it but I did see it sitting. It was very odd!!!

    We are in Utah. Our case arrived today – 6/22, and it was incorrect. 3 Patti’s, no Shifty Drugs, 2 Marios, 1 Bumper Save, no Vitoline Pitty, 1 Andrea. It had a white label with green at the bottom: 351/807. We ordered on the 2nd presale day. We’re going to take it to our local K-mart tonight to see if we can trade out. We went on Saturday and got our 2 Todds, one for each of our boys, but it wasn’t crowded and we were putting all our eggs into the case basket, so we didn’t get a Shifty or VP. We’re betting they will still have a lot of their event cars left over.
