If this Goose that laid the Golden Cars gets run over by a truck or eaten by a Pitbull, no comment from me……………..

I know that everyone is pretty frustrated by all of this stuff and i for one am also getting pretty frustrated. and dont for one minute think that i am defending matty but i really dont think that we here at T5AD grasp the scope of the Cars toys. Just think about the numbers (from a Mattel perspective).

    1. There are currently 18 cars in a case.
    2. Mattel ships approximately 20,000 of each case.
    3. So far, over 3 years, they have shipped at least 30 different case assortments (at least)

    That totals 10.8 million Cars

Lets say there are 3000 T5AD members (I know its less than that but i’m trying to make a point)

Lets say on average we each have 200 Singles releases (since some people only collect one of each, others two of each and some three of each).

    That totals 600,00 cars

So that means mattel has sold somewhere in the region of 10 million cars to people other than the ones who use this site (and thats just in the US)

Thats quite a large number to not base your case assortments on. As far as Mattel are concerned they are shifting their product.
I know that some stores have the same stuff week after week but these cars are going somewhere and that is all the Mattel Execs are interested in.

Like i said, i’m not sticking up for Matty, but i can see both sides of the argument.

    Thats my 2 pence worth.

    • Edge says:

You’re assuming the other 10 million cars were actually sold.

In my local TRU alone there are about 600 Bling Bling McQueens sitting on the pegs, not counting what they still have in the stockroom. And that is just ONE TRU. There are 1600 TRUs world wide, so that alone accounts for almost a million cars!

OK maybe I exaggerate ( actually, there is a very real possibility that I AM exaggerating ), but my point is, maybe the Mattel reps should do some kind of inventory to see what sells and what doesn’t, and then the squirrels might base their case assortments on that information. I HIGHLY doubt that they are doing anything remotely close to that at this time; Met has posted numerous pictures in the past of pegs full of McQueens to prove this point, and sadly I see the same thing over here. The latest case assortments, starting from Case H and above, are going to kill this line before we get to CARS 2…

  • Edge says:

So to sum it up, there is not ONE new release in Lenticular Case B., and FIVE MORE G@#%$! Lightning McQueens!! That’s FOURTEEN Lightning McQueens in two consecutive cases (not counting the other McQueens). Another really smart marketing move; must be the same squirrel that did the assortment for Case A.

This is getting to be too ridiculous for words. I’m trying to stay optimistic, but it really does look like Mattel is purposely trying to kill off this line…

    • TJH-AZ says:

Hold on. It seems as if we’re forgetting about the case with the Chase Ferrari in it (sorry, don’t remember the case letter). That one has a bunch of repeats. And that’s the one I think is going to bring the retail channel to a complete stop. If the retailers buy multiple cases of this one to put out, the pegs will be crammed with pegwarmers for easily a month or longer. I said on a previous post that I think this is going to be a long spring, and as soon as that Chase Ferrari case shows up, the molasses is going to start flowing. So, I wouldn’t worry too much about these lenticular cars just yet. The Ferrari case will easily carry us through K-Mart day in June. And by July, everyone will be soooo starving for anything new (not like that’s a new feeling) that those still left collecting will be ready for anything BUT the Ferrari Chase case.

    • Daniel says:

Looks like the International squirrels got the job of choosing the assortments for the US as well. 4 new Cars (3 models) out of 48…about as much as Canada has seen since Christmas!

3 years now into this line, and Mattel is getting worse and worse. I must admit, a part of me wants this line to die so I can stop wasting time going to the stores for nothing. If they continue the way they are, I just might get my wish.

    • If you are all angry now, just wait until you see that the price for these will be higher then the regular mainline singles!!! 🙁

      No, I am not kidding.

      • Sorry, should have typed “than”, not “then”

        • Daniel says:

I will not be surprised. Wal-Mart has increased the price of Launchers 30% in the last month and Mega-sized have gone up 35% since X-Mas. Singles are already at $5 everywhere.

Like I said, Mattel is killing one of their most successful toy lines and they have nobody else to blame but themselves because of their sad case assortments, poor distribution and continuous price gouges. I mean, what’s better? To sell millions at a buck a pop, or to sell thousands at 2. Time will tell.

  • Ace Diamondrunner says:

I’d buy Dinoco McQueen for 3 reasons:

    1) It’s a chase vehicle
    2) It comes with a Piston Cup (hooray!)
    3) There just aren’t enough LM variations in the world 😉

(MET: Matty would like to be your bestest friend now 🙂 ).

  • PirateDad says:

    Update
Told my family I was selling my Minty Mint collection and here was the responses…

    PirateSon…just your collection, right Dad?

PiratePrincess….we are still getting ALL the girl cars, right?

PirateWife…what are you going to use the money for?

PirateSon…are we going to but MORE Nerf GUNS??

Everyone Else….will you still leave smartbumper comments on Take5??

(MET: Yea, youse in Canada have every right to be madder than a tornado …).

    • buckland-blowouts says:

      Don’ do it!!!

minty mint is worth keepin’ Dude-WoodenPirateLegged-Dude!!!!!

For the sake of, oh, I don’t know…. The kid in you?!?!?!!!?!?!?

Somethin’ you might want to have in a few years… and for the cost of what…? A few hundred bucks and a lifetime of stoage space?

Don’t know about you but… When the question arose if these cars would be worth anything in the future, someone was rght to point out: Collect what you love – And it will be priceless regardless.”

Personally I have only collected afew things – consciously – in my life. Button/pins, sugar packets and now, Cars.

I am glad I held on to the meek handful of buttons and pins I found when I was eight… They sure do bring back funny little memories…

Those sugar packs went in the garbage and rightfully so… I kept them from places we went to when I was really young and couldn’t tell you what or where they had to do with…

But mind you, everytime I see a sugar pack with a picture on it or a company logo wrapped around its little sugar-packet-body, I can’t help but think of all the good times and wacky places I ‘ve been to with my family…

And as for Cars… Well this is the first real fixation I have ever had and have been able to collect with all my heart – And from what I gather from the little I know about you and the whole lot I care aout you – I can se they mean maybe more to you than you think…

PS – The soap boxis free now…! (LOL)

  • Monica says:

Loving the Geisha Cars, will definitely buy them.

One of my boys still loves Cars although they are both getting into new things now like Ben 10 and Bakugans (I really do not get those at all, ugly and expensive).

We almost lost Mario Andretti to a dog that we are dogsitting. She picked him right up in her mouth and took off.

  • TJ Hurlburt says:

Nice post. And I agree. I’ll hang in there and check out this whole lenticular thing. I’ll bide my time and see how it goes. But… that doesn’t give Mattel a PASS on the whole screwed up case assortment and distribution issues. Those are the issues I continue to read about and those are the issues Mattel needs to address. If they don’t, they’ve proven that they just don’t car about this line or the people around the world that are continueing to support it, good or bad.

  • cars-in-your-eyes says:

I cannot believe how much you some of you grown up adults whinge and whine and moan. We don’t even know what these cars will end up looking like – it’s only the eyes that will change, it’s not like they are going to be made out of plastic or have their size changed or be painted by monkeys.

My 2 year old son has a decided lack of patience to wait for stuff, but he puts alot of you guys to shame. Just bide your time and don’t be so impatient. Hey the cars might not be flying out at the moment, but I bet if there was a new case case out every week with only new cars in it some of you would moan because you couldn’t afford to Collect them all!!

I hope that every person that has written a post moaning about something takes the time to contact Mattel on the number that Met gave and share your opinion with them. At least the people that can make a difference will have heard your views. To me, posting your views here just does a downer on the rest of us who are still enjoying themselves and eats away at everyone like a disease.

I love fishing and will always love fishing. If I have several days of not catching anything, I don’t throw in the towel and moan about the lack of fish. I just believe that I will catch something next time and keep going out. If everytime we went out we found new cars it might be great for a while but after a while it wouldn’t be nearly as exciting hunting for the cars!

Lean times really show which fans are true fans. True fans support their team no matter how bad things get or lean the pickings are. I reckon times like this will really show which of us are true fans and which are ‘good times only’ fans.

Come on guys… You can do it!

ALWAYS LOOK ON THE BRIGHT SIDE OF LIFE!

Reminds me of some wise words from a great American Jackalope

“Pink? Pink? Well, what’s wrong with pink?
Seems you’ve got a pink kink in your think.
Does it matter what color? Well, that gets nope.
Be it pink purple or heliotrope.
Now sometimes you’re up and sometimes you’re down,
When you find that you’re down well just look around:
You still got a body, good legs and fine feet,
Get your head in the right place and hey, you’re complete!

“Now as for the dancin’, you can do more,
You can reach great heights, in fact you can soar.
You just get a leg up and ya slap it on down,
And you’ll find you’re up in what’s called a bound.
    Bound, bound, and rebound.
Bound and you’re up right next to the sky,
And I think you can do it if you give it a try,
First get a leg up, slap it on down…”

    Chin up Guys!!!

He climbs off his Soap box! 🙂

    • PirateDad says:

Yes, but wood you go to a lake, once a week. and throw your pole in, when you KNOW that there is NOTHING in the lake?? Week after week after week for almost one full year…how much patience should we have?

Then the owner of the lake tells you he will stock the lake and then doesn;t but blames the fish breeder, then tells you it will be filled with pickeral, and they are your favorites, but when you get there, only koi, and of course you don;t eat koi….so wood you keep fishing there?

Finally the pickeral arrive but they are 3x the money to fish there and it is becuz they come with their own fish launchers, but you cant; eat the launcher, and of course the anology has completely fallen apart, but you get my point!

Happy fishing, and don;t forget Matty owns the lake!!

      • cars-in-your-eyes says:

You know, I probably would keep going. I might decrease the frequency of the visits until better times were back, but I would still keep going. To me it is getting out there on doing it that I enjoy. Catching is a bonus, fishing is the fun.

When you’re feeling lonely, lost and let down
Seems like those dark skies are following you around
And life’s just one big shade of gray
You wonder if you’ll see the light of day

Behind the clouds, the sun is shining
Believe me even though you can’t quite make it out
You may not see the silver lining
But there’s a big blue sky waiting just behind the clouds

I’ve heard it said that this too shall pass
Good times or bad times, neither one lasts
But thinking that your luck won’t ever change
Is like thinking it won’t ever stop once it starts to rain

Behind the clouds, the sun is shining
Believe me even though you can’t quite make it out
You may not see the silver lining
But there’s a big blue sky waiting just behind the clouds
Yeah, there’s a big blue sky waiting just behind the clouds

      • TJH-AZ says:

        Hey PD,
Actually, it’s a good analogy, I wouldn’t change a thing. You’re spot on. The only part you missed was the Canadian twist. That’s where the fish are actually in the lake, just in a different part, netted off where no one can get to them. And for an entire year all the fish in the netted off part are shipped south to the USA and none are released into the other part of the lake where you fish.
All the Cars I have still say Ontatio Canada on them.

      • gervart says:

        mmmmmm…………fish launchers 😀

      • Steve AKA: Poppa says:

If you cannot find fish with your pole, you need a different alternative. I found it was quicker and easier to catch fish using hand grenades. But, we can’t do that is the “world.” Anything goes “across the pond.” 🙁

I made several stops today and found a dismal offering of Cars. Two Walmarts totally sucked! Two Targets also sucked! There was the customary deluge of RED CARS, i.e., McQueens. Then there was an abundance of Tex. The collector and non collector has a right to complain! The case assortment by Mattel does not make sense. Push McQueens like crazy? Why? What’s the reasoning?

There are people collecting by the numbers, but, there are always new buyers (people have kids! Duh!). Something wrong with a case dedicated to the original twelve character Cars. A window box display for Costco or Sam’s Club. Where are Mattel’s product development people?

Last stop on the way home was the antique mall. He’s reduced his price for basic Cars from $6.00 to $5.00 as well as the Chase Cars-Snot Rod, Chuki, DJ. Mega size are now $9.95, including Elvis. Given the fact the kiosk owner is a retail scalper, how can he make money? The stall rent is $100 per month with a 20% override to the house. Buy retail at $3.00, sell at $5.00 with a $1.00 to the house (not counting the stall rent). The guy must be a General Motors manager who lost his job.

I have the gut feeling the Cars line will diminish in scope (good thing) and take up fewer pegs in the aisles. Mattel in the past tried to do too much with Hot Wheels and paid the price, i.e., failure. Kids and parents want the basic $1.00 car, not expensive playsets. So can the jumbo sized toys that obviously do not sell, and, stick with the basic 1:55 scale.

Rats, irritated now. So much for b@#&hing. Think I’ll go fishing! 🙂

      • ScoobyDoo says:

Am I watching the fishing channel here ??? TakeFishADay.com 😉

    • Edge says:

Fact remains, there are NO new cars in this case, none…

  • djbennett22 says:

    SARGEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!

  • jestrjef says:

    Um . . . 14 Lightning Mcqueens in the first two cases . . . WTF??

If these survive after the first case, the second case is BOUND to kill the line . . .

As for the Showgirls and Mater the Greater stuff . . . something tells me they are just EYE CANDY to keep us thinking new stuff is coming . . . oh what are these cars with the CRAZY eyes . . . hmmmmm, I might as well buy the CRAZY eye Cars cuz I cannot find the Showgirls . . . 😈

  • chaisson says:

all we need is the chase cars!!!!LOL 🙂

  • PirateDad says:

Promises Promises….anyone remember Black Friday?? How about WM cube? or direct import only Haulers?

    • Micky says:

You’re right PD. All those and much more have been a disappointment to us. Looks like Mattel has killed the Golden Goose. How sad 🙁

    • Micky says:

Hey how come my comment came up //Anonymous (author)?? I’m not anonymous LOL!

You’re right PD. All those and much more have been a disappointment to us. Looks like Mattel has killed the Golden Goose. How sad 🙁

    • iamspeed says:

I never thought I’d see Jerry haulers at our Meijer stores here in the midwest, but they’re here……….apparently they read about “direct import” like WM did.

    • buckland-blowouts says:

Yeah – I’ll believe it when I see it too…

  • CaptainChunk says:

Met, any chance of seeing what these new googly eyed cars look like sometime soon?

  • gervart says:

I think i might have to throw in the towel soon, who’s wiht me >:0
