Mattel to Offer 3D Toy Printing

Mattel will start to offer 3D printed toys … there are no details on if there’s a template, free form or if you print it at home or they print it and mail it to you?

“The companies haven’t revealed which toy lines kids will be able to customise. But did say the first in a series of new apps is scheduled to launch in the second half of 2015 along with a dedicated online hub for Mattel’s 3D printing initiatives.”

You can do all manner of 3D printing now … it’s just tedious and expensive, and the parts aren’t very forgiving of actual day-to-day use. As a display piece they work great, but they’d be demolished if a kid were to play with them.

Do you know why I find the prospect of 3D Printing for toys to be so exciting? I want to be able to make my own replacement parts when something busts.
