Mattel Disney Pixar CARS 2: Strange Bag of Hurt

Everyone once in a while, there is a toy extension that makes pretty zero sense on many levels.

At one point, there was a listing for “Dollar Store Assortment” and that on the surface made sense. In this economy, you want to reach everyone and some parents might not be willing to spend $3.99 or more on a diecast CAR, so why not offer up a plastic CAR with some play value for around $1.

So, you would think a “Dollar Store Assortment” would at least be in the range of around $1 – maybe $2?

Ta-da … The $5 Dollar Dollar Store CARS 2 Assortment.

Missed it by that much.

Oh, and they are a weird scale – 1:32 ish.

All plastic.

With stickers for the windshield.

In a bag.

They are not bad … but they missed the price by 500%.

The little display ramp is nice but not $4 dollars nice.

This is pretty much the most expensive item ever at Big Lots. I’ve seen chairs there for $4.

What’s hilarious is they created a separate faceplate – were they planning on releasing a 9th wave of these with a different expression Finn?

“DDD” was nice enough to buy one and send in all these nice photos … but he may have purchased the only one in America so it could be a collectors item?

I did see them a few weeks ago – the two trays I saw were pretty much stuffed.

Somewhere along the line, they forgot to price a “Dollar Store assortment” for a Dollar Store retailer. It’s a Happy Meal only the Chicken Nuggets, fries and drink come separately … you don’t even get fun Ronald trivia!

“DDD” made the best of the situation …

Well, at least one (giant) kid in America is enjoying his $5 Dollar Dollar Store Finn. πŸ™‚

This week our Big Lots only had one plastic Finn from this line marked down to a more reasonable $3, so I bought him.

Is it bad to say that the worst thing about this extension of the diecast line might have been that nonsensical $5 price point? It’s really a decent toy. The diecast is meticulously detailed, especially the wheels. It’s durable enough that my toddler and preschooler didn’t inflict any damage, and while the sticker windshield will probably be showing that dreaded actiplaque in a few years, far more expensive Cars toys have included sticker windshields, some of which were already peeling off in the package on the store shelf. :/

There were only four (?) characters in this exact scale, but they’re close enough to the 2006 McD’s diecasts. It makes one wonder whether these could have been originally planned as prizes in a more healthful kid’s meal (Disney-Pixar severed ties with fast food chain promos a few years back) but instead wound up at chains like Big Lots.

Either way, these aren’t half-bad for $3 or less but the original $5 price truly made no sense.

  • Rollerwings says:

I saw these in Big Lots and was confused by the price as well, especially because the real diecasts were selling for less just a few feet away on an endcap. If I was a kid I’d rather have a more durable diecast car for my money.

    • Rollerwings says:

Looking at these more closely, both the price tag on the front and the UPC code on the back are printed on stickers instead of directly on the packaging, so could they have possibly been initially made for another discount retailer that ended up carrying the real diecasts instead?

Someone took the time to mold a fairly accurate representation of the characters; they’re not bad at all but it’s hard to say how well the windshield eye sticker will hold up over the years. The plastic bag is sorta neat if you want to open the toy and still save the packaging — no tearing required and it folds flat.

These wouldn’t be bad for a kid who’s most interested in the four main characters, but the price is still too high for what you’re getting and they’d be out of scale if you put them with the diecasts. Some kids would care about that and others might not.

A dollar doesn’t go as far as it use too!

Guilty. I bought a set several weeks ago. I like the odd stuff as well.

  • Indy says:

If they can trick people into paying 5$ for this surely real die cast fans would gladly pay 35$ to get the die cast version of the huge megadumptruck in Cars 2!
Always okay for A laugh the tipping over scenes in the first movie but now they took it to the max,one of my personal favorite moments in the new movie when Mater has this dumptruck tipped over, the sound was incredible, that’s funny right there!!
Would look cool next to the Banshee.

  • Sam says:

I did braek my other 1:55 Finn, but i’m not replacing it with this.

  • Tom says:

Shout out to DDD for the sweet display!
Nothing @ Big Lots is “chosen” by their buyers, per se. They just get whatever is on deal. Per DMB’s CVS theory, they are trying to maximize opportunities and make as much lettuce as possible off impulse buyers.
These appear to be rubbish but may have fireworks potential.

    Wow, just, wow,

  • Mariela says:

Thanks for been brave DDD to buy this, but $5 for a plastic car…no way!!

  • SUCKS…NOT CANON…AKA BABY POOP…FOR THE UNDISCERNING CHILD

  • sidewall74shine says:

Just because it’s cars, doesn’t mean I’ll buy it. Clear?

  • Eric says:

Everyone save your pennies and drop exactly 100 more if you need a bigger Finn. The Disney store had plenty of nice 1/43 (or whatever scale they are) Finns with a nice acrylic display case (and they are made of metal, shhhhhh). Same goes for the other 3 Cars. I cannot believe these are even Mattel. Maybe they are the Cars 2 of the future. Now brought to you in 100%, yes 100% plastic! πŸ™‚

  • bobbyjack says:

These remind me of the plastic Mater and McQueen that were on top of my son’s birthday cake last year. Now I think I will stop at BigLots tomorrow and pick up a Finn and Fran to go with the ones we already have.

  • Jack says:

Plastic cars in a bag. Yuck! No thanks.

  • FireFox91 says:

Big Lots is also selling diecast Cars 2 cars for $3.90. This is 9c less than normal retail and 40c more than Wal-Mart. Why would I buy Cars there at that price? I would rather give Target the extra 9c just for being a nicer store.

  • DjBennett22 says:

sorry to constantly keep posting like this but… I JUST WON A TICKET TO GO SEE CARS 2 AGAIN! Play the Maters secret mission wal mart game on facebook and do it over and over and over until you see a thing that says 7.50 worth ticket, i said ill go to a drive in to mabee be able to see 2 movies, but i just realized i couldve seen it in 3d if i did it right. SWEET!

  • kevin roche says:

will they release the 11th, or am i seeing things..i have counted them in the movie, and there is also a still photo with 11 racers.

    whats up

(MET: I think they added Rip last so Mattel probably never saw him until earlier this year …).

    • kevin roche says:

so will we see rip or is rip the new apple?????

also , do you see target or toys r us releasing all the racers at once in a box set, maybe around christmas– or is this a( forget about it deal) ?

  • Refriedbeans says:
