Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: Wally Hauler Dirt & Gritty Version

The Wally Hauler is beginning to appear in more Walmart stores …

Wally Hauler WOC2 WM
And if you want one, better grab one. I suspect this will be the last release – certainly the last release without some change – maybe next year WM changes slogans …

And sometimes, production sloppiness or errors are nice …

Grit Wally
It’s Ultra Realism Wally Hauler! With real road grit just like a real truck as it blasts through the Rockies 🙂

Bravo! The two hours of shorts were really great.

  • iamspeed says:

I hope everyone remembered to record the Pixar Shorts tonight!!!

“Mater and The Ghostlight” was FANTASTIC!!! 🙂

It airs again at 9 Eastern……ABC Family channel

  • iamspeed says:

Wouldn’t it be appropriate to name this post “Getting the Dirt on Wally Hauler”?

  • Steve AKA: Poppa says:

There are other Mattel products in the same aisle as Cars/Pixar toys, and, I do not see the same lousy workmanship and quality control. There are many tractor trailer rigs with better graphics and paint jobs at less cost. Maybe it’s time for Mattel to run a line of collector grade castings similar to Nascar logo products. Collectors would rather pay a little more than buy cheaply made crap. Even Hot Wheels for a buck are consistently better than the smears and brush strokes.

    • Edge says:

People seem to consistently forget that this is a TOY for a KID. Not a collector’s item. Young kids, for which this product is intended, are not going to care about the quality (at least the ones I know), as long as they can play with it. If you seriously want to collect cars and put them on display, I suggest switching to the NASCAR items you mentioned, or another series. Personally, in addition to CARS, I collect NASCAR models and Formula One models. On average, they cost five to ten times more than a Disney Pixar CAR (for a similar-scale car), and it shows in quality. You get what you pay for.

      • Whoseline says:

well if you get what you pay for, then why as mentioned are the $1 hotwheels cars quality better than CARS cars?

        • Steve AKA: Poppa says:

It has to do with the emphasis on quality. There is no excuse for grit, smears, brushstrokes, etc on haulers or 1:55 castings. Yes, a little kid may smash up his toys, but, he’s the one that should be damaging the toy. I usually do not buy pre-damaged cars, especially since I stopped buying Fords. Why do I see fingerprints in the paint job of a hauler? Why do I see chips on a car that’s in its package? Why do I see a bristle from a brush embedded in the paint? Maybe Mattel needs to run a clip on the production of its Cars line. Mattel has done it before with Hot Wheels. The film shows the entire process from idea to packaging. I suspect the fingerprints are due to insufficient drying time. The brushstrokes and bristles are probably due corrections to uneven application of the spray paint. I have many Burago Disney licensed products in larger scales that are true works of art. It can be done for the collector. As long as the buyers strip the pegs bare, Mattel will not increase quality control.

          • Edge says:

Bburago specializes in die-cast cars. I don’t think it’s fair to compare the quality of their products to that of a company that produces a boatload of other toys. Kinda like comparing the bread of your local bakery to the bread of your local Wal-mart.

          • John in Missouri says:

Geez, enough with the Ford bashing already! You must have stopped buying Ford’s in about 1982!! I’ll bet you still walk around saying FORD stands for “Fix Or Repair Daily” because of your experiences 25 years ago. Join the 21st century already!!

        • John in Missouri says:

Are Hot Wheels even diecast anymore? I kind of thought they were made of entirely of plastic.

    • There are several factors involved with the cost of these items, that go beyond just the cost of production. Mattel has to pay licensing fees to both Disney and Pixar for the Cars line, as well as licensing fees for individual cars like Dale Jr., Darrell Cartrip, Apple, Sven, and Jay Limo (whenever that one gets released). There are minor licensing fees paid to vehicle manufacturers for Hot Wheels but it is much less than for the Cars line because it’s a kind of free advertisement for the car companies. The same goes with the big rigs and other diecasts produced by Mattel.

So if you want the same high quality as you see on those other lines, you can expect to pay $8-$10 per single, $12-$15 per MegaSize, and $20 or more for Haulers.

Are you willing to pay those kinds of prices, times 300+ vehicles? Of course not, and Mattel knows that, which is why the quality suffers and more plastic is used as they try to keep costs down and prevent (as much as possible) price increases.

      • dj says:

whats wrong with sven just cause hes a hummer same as tj

      • John in Missouri says:

They also need to pay licensing fees to Ford, GM, Ferrari, Jeep, etc.

      • Edge says:

Well said. Case in point: Mattel’s line of 1/18 scale Formula One cars (done under the Hot Wheels brand). I happen to collect these cars, and the leading company in this area (by far) is a German company called Minichamps. I own a 1/18 Ferrari F2000 done by Mattel, and the exact same car done by Minichamps. Can the two be compared? No way. Why? Different target audience. Minichamps makes their models purely for collectors. They are accurate, detailed, impeccable. And they will set you back $120 PER CAR. The Mattel one? Not nearly as accurate or detailed. But the price for that one (back in the day)? $24.99 (Mattel has since upped their game because they now have exclusive licenses with some teams. The effect of those licenses was a steep increase in price, and, I must admit, quality as well). Can you fault Mattel for that? No, not in my opinion. The cars in those days were not intended for the same buyer. Looping that back to the Disney Cars by Mattel, again, these are toys made for kids. They are not specifically made for collectors, although the detailing on most could lead you to think otherwise. But, if Mattel really wanted to make a line for collectors, they wouldn’t have killed off the “JL Signature Series”, which unfortunately went the way of the Dodo… of course, these cars wouldn’t have been on sale for $3.69, either.

    • BigMOCats says:

WOW! All this from a little overspray, this is all you guys have to do all day?

    • moe says:

You need to find something to do with your time instead of bashing products and complaining all day long. You never have nothing good to say about anything. Being miserable must suck!!

  • Whoseline says:

had to go to 4-5 different walmarts to find 1 decent wally hauler. the quality control at mattel is ridiculous now.

  • WonderTread says:

That’s not grit, that’s the remains of a UPS truck loaded down with boxes from Amazon.com.

Seriously though, when they finally arrived in my area I found 2 out of 8 or so that were in decent shape, no “grit” in the eyes (ouch!) and the stickers put on decently, not all crooked and rippled. I’m not too picky since I know my kids are just going to bang them up anyway but some of the haulers I’ve seen are really badly done.

Maybe next release it will look like the box illustration, maybe with some Gaskits cargo crates!!

    Dream, dream, dream……

  • John in Missouri says:

Road grit??? Nah, looks more like the lead truck backed into the asbestos filter at the factory, and POOF we have a variant.

  • jmularczyk says:

so has anyone compared it to last years Wally? Are there any differences other then the packaging?

(MET: Nothing apparent. Haven’t bothered to open it …).

  • SweetBug says:

Yeah, I said that too, and guess what is sitting on the shelf? The Wally Hauler. Collect ’em all!

  • applefinatic says:

It stinks it’s not in the movie i only collect cars from the movie

    • Mr. T says:

I said that too once upon a time – many here can vouch for that!! I caved however – in a limited fashion – got the wally hauler and the mater toons stuff – the only thing I will touch are the show stoppers – that’s because they were in the deleted scenes.

      Collect MOST of them….. 🙂

  • Chris says:

Why doesn’t the picture on the box match the hauler in the box? The cab in the picture has that cool stripe on it.

  • Chris says:

That is the first time I’ve seen one with that much “road grit”.
