Disney Pixar: CARS2-World Grand Prix Coming June 24, 2011

John Lasseter & the Pixar gang were in Venice to be presented with a lifetime achievement award from the Venice Film festival by some dude named George Lucas.

Afterwards, he held a press conference to talk about the next Disney Pixar slate of films including a lot more details regarding CARS2.

Here’s what we’ve got so far now.

In our last post, it looks like Disney has grabbed all the urls surrounding the title:

CARS 2: World Grand Prix

CARS2-WORLDGRANDPRIX.COM
CARS2WORLDGRANDPRIX.COM
CARSWORLDGRANDPRIX.COM
WORLDGRANDPRIX-MOVIE.COM

And John Lasseter has spilled more of the plot details – that Mater will take over as his crew chief – with the rest of his pit crew follows (Ramone, Flo, Guido, Luigi, Sarge & Mack, presumably Sally will join said pit crew in CARS2 … so Doc is retired? And Fillmore? Voiced by another?).

There is 5-part worldwide race called “The Race of Champions.”

First up is a race in Tokyo, starting at Mount Fuji and heading downtown;

Second race is a German course through the Black Forest;

Then “Porto Corsa” in Italy, which is based partly on the Monte Carlo Grand Prix;

Followed by a LeMans-like 24-hour race around Paris;

And finally a thrilling climax in London, approaching Buckingham Palace (where the guards appear to be Land Rovers).

So, we will see a smattering of race cars from drifters/tuners to road rally race cars to Formula 1 to GT and all together in one crazy race in the finale.

Meanwhile, Mater saves the life of a British secret agent called Finn McMissile (an Aston Martin) and becomes embroiled in a huge spy thriller. Only no-one believes him. That too comes to a head at Buckingham Palace.

John L also notes that …CARS 2 … “not just be a racing movie” but also a “Hitchcockian espionage, spy thriller thing.”

The plot, he explained, would see slow-witted tow truck Mater being mistaken for a secret agent while accompanying his friend to Europe.

In keeping with the original, landmarks like the Eiffel Tower in Paris and London’s Big Ben will be adapted as if they existed in a cars-only universe.

Release DATE: June 24, 2011 (2D & 3D)

Additionally, for the press, they showed off two of the three new mater Tall Tales coming next Spring:

Unidentified Flying Mater – had the tow truck befriending a UFO, helping it escape from Parking Area 51 and learning to fly.

Heavy Metal Mater, which had the tow truck accidentally inventing heavy metal and becoming a massive stadium-filling star.

& the third one is Mater as a Wrestler (as wrassler if you will).

Complied from EMPIRE (magazine), BBC News & IGN.com.

Thanks to everyone who sent in the heads up including MiaSenorita, Charles C., & Brian M. – thanks.

Oh yea, clear out another room or two …

i heard from a website that LMQ would have a kid, that didn’t believe that his dad was a famous race car, so LMQ joins the World Grand Prix to prove it……… don’t know if it’s true or not, but i hope it is.Don’t be mad at me if its a lie. Be mad at the people i heard it from. AKA YouTube

cars 2 wooooow coool ai want to see it

  • LiamsMom says:

Exciting information! It’s going to be hard to wait for this as I find out more about it.

  • Jack says:

Oh my mistake. Yes June makes sense. End of school, Fourth of July. It is a good time to put out a Summer blockbuster, but much too far away.

  • Matersgrlfriend says:

    OMG awesome!

  • Jack says:

I’m thinking January 2011 dosen’t make sense. Why wouldn’t you do it either Thansgiving weekend 2010 or Christmas week. Either that or just wait until Presidents week. This I believe will be the biggest Global movie(especially for boys) in the history of Disney/Pixar movies. I also believe it would be better to have at least some cars from cars 2 ready for next Christmas. This is the last Christmas I think they can milk out of the first movie. The cars toons are helping and the final lap cars, toons cars and new story tellers will probably keep us buying enough for the next year, but I think Mattel will miss the boat if they don’t give us a new movie to get excited about by next Christmas, with the first releases from the new movie. Now if they have the First Grand Prix cars ready for next Christmas, then we will be lining up quick.

    • Matersgrlfriend says:

I am thinking it coincides with the opening of Carsland at Disneyland!

    • John in Missouri says:

      January 2011? It’s June 2011.

The reason they don’t open around Christmastime is simple economics. When they release the money on June 24, they get some serious Summer revenue. And when the DVD comes out in November, they get their second chance for revenue during the Holiday shopping season. Very smart move!

Also, who’s to say they won’t release Cars 2 characters in time for Christmas 2010 in anticipation of the movie release?

  • Flik'sFriend says:

I cannot wait for this movie!!!!!!!!

  • Shelby says:

Whoa! As a geography teacher, I am LOVING this! Sounds like I have the perfect excuse to show CARS2 during social studies class – sweeeeeet!

    I want them all!

  • Michigander says:

We will be interested in seeing the second movie and how it continues to build the “CARS” world?

But, will collectors continue to collect the “CARS” die-cast for another year and a half until the movie comes out?

Sadly, I do not think so?!?

Our Son is already losing interest – only occasionally playing with his loose “CARS” and having no interest in any “new” ones we MAY find!

Plus, with the EXTREMELY poor economy, we cannot afford to spend the money!!

  • BigMOCats says:

OMG!! Get out now while you can!!!!!!!! That’ll make it easier for me to find stuff! Finally some real cars!!!

  • Bob Eckel/TheeNaughty Knight says:

As a person who writes screenplays for a living…that is an awful lot of story line (5 locations) in a 90-min film – (around 15 – 18-min per location). Did I say 90-min, more than likely it would be between 80-89-min. Guess we’re all going to have to watch it multiple times and do a lot of REWINDS to REALLY SEE all that it sounds like IT COULD BE. Perhaps they’ll have Laverne, Sheila, and Rhonda dressed in Kimonos, with four thin rear white wall tires, to represent split-toe socks, and a small silk pillow in 20,000 different colors – so collectors will buy them all! And let’s not forget the variant ones. Oh and then there will be the really cute Buckingham Palace “Pitty” Guards…Never mind, Disney/Pixar, I’ll custom make those too (lol, wink).

Guess now Guido and Luigi will be speaking Japanese/English with a French accent! lol And when Mater says “Domo/Doumo” it’s going to sound like “Don’t Know” or “Doe Moe?” Hmmm…will he be saying “thank you” or just wanting to go eat sushi at Domo’s (a Japanese Country Foods Restaurant). Ohhh and with distinctive tastes, is the generous use of Shiitake mushrooms, Kombu, Hijiki, Funori Seaweed’s, and other sea vegetables, they use daily for a total of over 120 varieties of fresh sea foods, meats and vegetables…all sold as accessory items by Mattel!
Or will Mater REALLY be asking for a (Dōmo): A Japanese mascot, Nickelodeon design, sold only at Target!

Hmmm…sounds like this movie will NOT be nearly as good as the first one, sounds like it lacks the HEART and SOUL of the original story line…and sounds like Disney/Pixar has decided to take the greedy “cash out” option, by creating an international sequel that will include a gazillion new characters for us all to buy!!! I can imagine a character ensemble that will eclipse the Star Wars line! BUT we’ll never ever get all of the new characters, because we’re still missing four if not four hundred from the first movie!!! Hmmm…wonder how many different versions of Lightning McQueen they will be releasing for the new movie…5…10…20…McQueen with Sushi on his hood, McQueen with snow on his tire, Oktoberfest McQueen with Beet Steins on his hood, the variant possibilities are endless!

    • MackDaddy says:

So what! I say, “BRING IT ON!” Gotta have’em all! 😛

    • John in Missouri says:

Luigi and Guido with a French accent? Don’t you mean Italian?

    • Roswell says:

name ONE pixar film that wasnt good…..exacly

if they say they will do it then they will most likely do it and do it with such awesome awesomness that it will be awesome!

      • Bob Eckel/TheeNaughty Knight says:

Hmmm…well, “Wall-E” was painfully slow…and if you disect it, the general premise/concept of the story has been done better many times before, in other sci-fi books/movies, and even anime. So aside from the animation, it really is their worst outing, IMHO. As for their 2nd worst movie, I’d say it is either “UP” (which had a lot of promise but fell flat) but again, awesome animation visuals. “Toy Story 2” was bad, just an attempt to cash in on a “sequel” that is all. It sucked. But, you only wanted me to name one. Then again, I am no film critic, just a writer of films…with grand children (who love cartoons). Ohhh by the way, I also wrote a script for my envision of “CARS 2” which in my opinion would have been a much better story line, and would have ended in JAPAN in CARS 3 which could have spinned off “TRUCKS” and “BOATS” the movies.

        • Samuel says:

Sorry Bob, it’s a blog so you’re entitled to your opinion, but your just flat out wrong. There’s nothing wrong with UP.

        • hostile takeover banker says:

IMHO Pixar’s movies dominate over a swag of others due to the fact the story lines actually have good character development and encompass a range of values and morals. Add to the fact that both adults and kids can enjoy them and they are great. There are far too many blockbuster movies being made with millions of dollars spent on special effects and very little plot line. Or instead how about the writers that just re-write stories that have been told before, re-make movies that have been made before or just use one of the 9 main plot/genre ideas with a few different spins on it? I could be naming examples but the rant is long enough. Sure there are quite a few exceptions to the rule but they are far and few between. Over recent years Pixar has been nothing but a shining light. And with each successive film’s success I would find it hard to be critical of them.

  • nina says:

Why waiting till 2011..2010 is OK..

  • chuki_mama says:

For those collectors/parents who live in Cali and have the Disneyland SuperPass/Yearly membership, you can get a discount at and Disney Store and it doesn’t even have to be in Disneyland. Enjoy!! 😀

  • MiaSenorita says:

Sweet!!!!! I am not a nascar fan… sorry all of you that are 🙂 But I am a fan of Rally, LeMans, Grand Prix and drifitng!!!! This is going to be the best.

And I am already putting my house on the market so I can find a new, BIGGER house to keep all these cool cars in !!!!!!! Mattel, please please please bring Martin back to the drawing board to bring these guys to metallic life… I beg you.

Think of all the great new cars that could be done from this film? I can’t wait! Especially want that Aston Martin and I will send one to my UK friend Martin Ashton…. coincidence? I think not!!

Now why do we have to wait sooooo looooooong for it to come to theaters? Time to make additions to our homes? I don’t know, but it is going to kill me waiting.

  • John in Missouri says:

I want Mater to get new tires and then say “I ain’t supposed to work no more ’cause I just re-tired”.

  • Jack says:

Sounds great. Can you imagine how many new characters they will be able to make between 5 races and the different locations? However no one should be suprised with the Global theme or the UFO predictive programming. Fits right in with everything else and of course homage must be paid to the crown. This is good new to collectors with extras though as this is just going to make all the cars more wanted globally. I hope you don’t mind shipping internationally. 🙂

  • MackDaddy says:

Again, another great and informative post! Thank you Met.

I bet they’ll hide Todd in Porto Corsa.

  • 5oclockshadow says:

    here even more off subject…..

I get these offers in my email all the time… they usually don’t last very long.

  • carscrazydd says:

Met and everybody here, off subject a little but DisneyStore.com has the new racers, etc. up for grabs again!!

  • John in Missouri says:

I said this yesterday, but I want to say it again: as a Beatles fan, my only expectation from this movie is that as Mater whizzes through London, he passes 4 Beetles crossing Abbey Road. Please John Lasseter, please!!

  • hostile takeover banker says:

simply awesome! I can’t wait and I can only imagine the cool characters we are bound to meet in such places. those new Tall Tales will be great to see to.

    • hostile takeover banker says:

I’m just trying to think of what morals/values Pixar can pull out of what seems to be a spy thriller? but that said, the same can be said about all other movies on face value.

  • babychristianscars says:

    AWESOME can’t wait

  • elius04 says:

Wow, fantastic, I finally can see McQ in the italian Grand Prix!
I’m going to reserve the tickets!!!

  • Roswell says:

Ooooo…i was sketching my partners landrover hes spent years restoring the other day and was going to draw him a cars style version of it tearing thru the countryside,

and i actualy wondered if LMQ & Mater would visit england and what british characters they would include….landrover, mini, london taxi, ect…

i just hope theyget british actors to do the voices and not americans doing british accents….sorry ‘merica…you just cant pull it off!

(MET: I think half the actors we have are British/Scottish/Australian 🙂 … ).

  • PirateDad says:

CANT WAIT or as my Italian friend says NNNNNEEEEEEEEDDDDDDDD to go see it!!!

  • pwschuh says:
