“And those customers liked the spy-themed sequel as the CinemaScore grade was an A-.” which bodes well for its box office.

Via BoxOfficeGuru.com

It is the 4th biggest June opening – though Transformers 3 opens in 3 days so CARS 2 should be 5th in a few days. πŸ™‚

BoxOfficeGuru also has a list of all the Pixar film openings and final grosses.

So far, Pirates of the Caribbean 4 is Disney big blockbuster of the summer …

Or as John in MO found how they keep score …

For those playing along at home, Pirates 4 is now the 3rd highest grossing film in history after AVATAR & TITANIC … or the highest grossing film in history not involving James Cameron.

Here in Spain, the 6th of July, exactly 5 years after Cars 1 (6th July 2006)

I just saw the movie last night, and I have to say that I was disappointed. The new characters were shallow, undeveloped and not endearing at all. I think that this story would have made a good Cars-toon, but it did not work for me as a full length movie. The best part of the movie was contemplating all the new possible car releases! The Pixar “guys” made this movie to make massive amounts of money. I do not think they cared about the quality of the film.

    • Steve AKA: Poppa says:

Well, we took our granddaughter (10 11/12th) to see Cars 2 today. We had taken her in 2006 to see Cars One. She enjoyed it! The theater at the 3 PM showing was almost empty. I guess all the kids were at summer school! πŸ™‚ Some moms and dads brought kids who were totally too young to understand the plot. I think most of them were bored. Surely, the little ones who found the action soooo intense they played in the front aisle. Of course, none of the kids could have caught the adult humor or recognized the character cars based on the Queen and the Pope. Of course, they also would have missed the big fossil fuel multinational companies vs. sustainable bio-fuel save the world from global warming debate. I did enjoy the artistic quality of the work, identifying landmarks and locales, but, that would have been lost on the little ones.

I concur this was akin to a very loooooooong four minute action packed Mater cartoon. But, it is what it is! A vehicle (pun intended) to sell Mattel die cast toys and rake in 8% royalties from diapers to breakfast food.

I personally enjoyed more the story of Cars, The Original. It had a developing sweet romance between Lightning and Sally, the wisdom of Doc, strong characters, the little ‘youthful’ racers, and, the big final scene of the challenger vs. the establish racers on the big circuit.

I think the movie will play well to the intended age group (4-8), who will smashed their little Cars into each other on the way to Hot Wheels, action figures and video games. I did by my Sarge and that will be it.

I do not think my assessment of this picture is way off the mark with the general public. I would have thought the store displays would have been striped bare by now based on the hype the movie had. I think there will be tons of peg warmers due to sensory overload in the aisles, and, shallow character development.

Bobbyjack may be right about the writers being turned lose to have fun, but, it’s easy to give an artist that freedom when the money will be made anyway, either through the box office and marketing of the franchise. It will be interesting to see where the ‘gate’ ends up in relation to all the other Pixar movies. I’m sure there will be a Cars Three- to infinity and beyond!

Frankly, I enjoyed the Toy Story short more!

SPOILER ALERT :Im a total nerd, my love for a cars goes so deep i dont think anything could have had me agreeing with any of those stupid critics. (sorry) I feel that maybe there was too much comparison with the first, which was a completely different kind of movie. The message was similar but for Mater which was really cool. I just felt like there needed to be more of a clear perspective when critiquing this movie. Everyone is of course entitled to their opinions and I totally respect that. Cars wont ever be Toy Story 3 but thats okay, We love them for who they are as characters and how we can root for francesco bernoulli and even prof Z and the lemons because when it comes down to it they just feel unappreciated, who cant connect with that on occasion? Nobody can say they didnt love the fact that Mater got a girlfriend right? My point is, I just wish the critics could have seen what I saw, they hardly ever seem happy, they hated green lantern i read and It was AWESOME!

    • John in Missouri says:

I understand the whole lemons vs. the world thing, but even they deserved some character development. Instead we just have some mean cars with a bone to pick for some reason. They should have had some flashback scenes where the lemons discovered they were unwanted and unloved. (I would suggest doing so to the Sarah McLachlan tuned “When Someone Loved Me”, but that was already used in “Toy Story 2”.)

      • bobbyjack says:

Maybe there was nothing to flash back to. Maybe they were never loved. How sad.

      • Zobovor says:

I don’t think the lemons were ever meant to be sympathetic villains, not in the same vein as Lotso or Darth Vader. We don’t need to see Professor Z’s early history and start to feel sorry for him. He’s essentially the bad guy in a James Bond film.

I was a little non plussed when I first read the synopsis for Cars 2, which essentially boils down to “Lightning McQueen is in yet another race and Mater becomes an international spy.” I was willing to give it a shot since the original Cars essentially boils down to “Lightning McQueen is stranded in a boring backwater ghost town” but of course there’s so much in the original film to enjoy and the synopsis really doesn’t do it justice. The second movie was fun to watch, but it lacked the pathos and the heart of previous Pixar installments. It’s absolutely tragic when Sully thinks Boo has been smashed into a garbage cube or when EVE realizes that WALL-E’s personality has been erased, but I didn’t really find myself caring that much about the predicaments in Cars 2. (OH NO, WILL MATER EAT THE PISTACHIO ICE CREAM?!)

        • bobbyjack says:

Seriously, did anyone who is complaining about this movie listen to anything John Lassiter said about it months before it was scheduled to be released? The Pixar guys did this movie to have FUN! This movie was not created to win awards or capture your hearts. They already did that! They wanted to do something different this time. He has been saying the whole time he wanted to do a fish out of water story about MATER. What would MATER do in this situation? What would MATER do for fun in this country? They wanted to do a James Bond type story but instead of people, they would be CARS! Who takes a James Bond movie seriously? I think Pixar has succeeded in exactly what they set out to do here.

  • James Dalton says:

Not the greatest Pixar movie, but it was OK. The reviewers were right and I should have listened. This movie will continue to do numbers, event though it’s not all that. Bring on Transformers 3

  • I-am-speed says:

Doing pretty well for a movie that all the critics hate, huh? πŸ™‚

  • Steve AKA: Poppa says:

The cumulative totals for each film is not unexpected. The release dates are either the summer or the Christmas season. I would be interested in seeing the figures for the royalty income from all licensing agreements. I said years ago Disney was looking for a line of toys for boys. Analysts noted boys are quicker than girls to move into action figures and video games. As we have all seen Disney has been very successful in developing the Cars line. Although I have not seen Cars Two yet, it is obvious from the promotion of the toy lines through the cartoon shorts and now Cars Two, merchandizing has been paramount in creating Cars toys. Of all the Pixar movies on the list only the Toy Story movies are producing any appreciable amount of royalty income. The Cars attraction at the Disney Parks and the Disney Cartoon network will keep this line going forever. From the toys angel, I wonder if Mattel/Disney will produce ‘retro’ packaging for the Cars One castings.

  • bobbyjack says:

Cars 2 has also pulled in over $40 million overseas and it looks like it hasn’t even opened most places yet! Looks like Cars 3 will be a reality! I have no problem waiting another 5 years either, my kids will only be 11, 8, and 6! Bring on more Mater Tales!!!

  • John in Missouri says:

The irony is that I didn’t even know Pirates 4 was out yet. I’ve never even seen the first three installments.

  • rpag says:

This is great for all those who dislike CARS!
