20th Anniversary Lightning McQueen Golden Promo Coming Soon

One of the most intriguing 1:55 scale releases announced in the 2026 poster is the 20th Anniversary Golden Lightning McQueen Promo.

The model is officially listed as a "Golden" Promo, and that single word already tells us a lot. Traditionally, "Promo" vehicles are not sold as part of the regular retail assortment. Instead, collectors usually have to participate in a special promotional campaign to obtain them.

Over the years, Mattel has offered several promotional Lightning McQueen releases in different ways. Some required collectors to purchase a certain number of Mattel Disney Pixar Cars products, mail in their proof of purchase, and then wait for the promotional vehicle to arrive by mail.

More recently, the process has become much simpler. Promotional cars have often been distributed directly through participating retailers. Customers only needed to spend a minimum amount on Mattel Cars products, and the exclusive vehicle was given as a free reward at checkout.

A good example is the Cruisin' Lightning McQueen Disney 100 promotion. To receive the exclusive car, shoppers had to spend 20 dollars on Mattel Cars products. Interestingly, after the promotion ended, some stores that still had remaining stock simply placed the vehicles on store shelves and sold them like any standard release. That allowed many collectors who had missed the promotion to pick one up later.

Another interesting case was the Golden Lightning McQueen based on Cars 3, released in 2021. It was originally expected to be a traditional mail-in promotional item. However, it eventually became available for direct purchase through the websites of several toy retailers, making it much easier for collectors to add it to their collections.

Hopefully, the same thing will happen with this new 20th Anniversary Golden Lightning McQueen.

The vehicle is not yet available, but there is already an encouraging sign. The French version of the Smyths Toys website has listed the model (https://www.smythstoys.com/fr/fr-fr/jouets/figurines/disney-cars/disney-pixar-cars-vehicule-1-55-flash-mcqueen-celebration-20-ans/p/261128), suggesting that its official release may not be too far away.

Interestingly, this release appears to be the color-reversed counterpart to the Lightning McQueen included in the 20th Anniversary Radiator Springs 5-Pack. In that set, Lightning features his classic red body accented with gold lightning bolt decals. This new promotional version flips the concept, sporting a gold body with red lightning bolt decals, making the two releases a perfect complementary pair.
