Disney Toon PLANES: Theater Grosses Week 2

Planes is chugging along – like a single engine dustcropper, it’s flying faster and longer than many people thought.

A 41% drop from opening weekend is actually pretty good for a kid’s movie. A drop in the 30% range as with We’re the Millers is GREAT as it means people are telling others to go see it – so 40% drop for PLANES is pretty good. The only problem is kids are headed back to school and in a few weeks will ALL be back in school so unlike the early summer where the % drop is about the same but there’s a lot more movie-goers so PLANES will probably end in the $65-$70 million dollar range for the US. It’s hard to tell how much international it’ll pull in but presumably at least that … so maybe $150 million in theater grosses total worldwide (not bad for a movie costing about $35 million to make) and I’m guessing they’ll probably sell $500-700 million in Planes merchandising (not just toys). It’s no wonder there’s a PLANES 2 coming AND it’s opening a month earlier next year so it has a much better chance to get to $100 million in the US. BTW, if PLANES gets to $150 million worldwide, it’s about what Turbo will do … though Turbo cost about $135 million to make – or about $100 million more than PLANES cost …

We’ve plans to see it Friday afternoon. I was alarmed to read, however, that a movie that sounds as silly as Turbo (which we’ve also yet to watch) is getting WAY more favourable reviews than Planes. When critics and regular viewers alike agree that a movie about racing snails is far superior to one about airplanes, that doesn’t put me in a very hopeful frame of mind.

(MET: With PLANES, you definitely have to be fan of the WORLD OF CARS to enjoy it because you want to spot CARS from CARS, envision and hope to see Pitty’s on screen that will be on your shelf in 6 months, etc, etc … so for most of us, it’s hard to be totally objective and I could definitely see if you don’t care much about CARS, PLANES is not going to do much to win you over – but ultimately, PLANES is for kids. For kids under 8, it’s an action movie … For anyone else, it’s merely a showcase for possible toys … sure, that opens a philosophical can of worms but clearly it’s not intended to be more – it is what it is. Most of us are here because the toys associated with this property are fun – we’re not collecting philosophers and Nobel Prize winner action figures … and I have a feeling that figure line would cause a lot more verbal assaults. 🙂 Personally I’m not exactly sure how you make a deep meaningful movie about PLANES with eyes and not annoy kids … so as long the kids are happy and entertained, good enough … IMHO).

Well, we finally took the boys to see Planes this afternoon  — a big deal as it’s their first movie at a theatre AND one of their birthdays — and the hard drive playing the movie crashed one-third of the way through!

Management apologized and sent everyone home with passes for another day. The kids are fine with that but I’m annoyed. This was a Planes themed birthday: duplo and diecasts and pitties and playsets plus we took the day off work to attend a matinee and the movie breaks?!

Yes, easy to say that the movie was so terrible that it commit suicide rather than play another moment of itself but, truth be told, we were all rather enjoying it. The kids were enraptured (not that they have any real basis of comparison) but I chuckled through much of it too. I liked it. What little I saw of it. It was kind of sweet.

My family must travel with a movie-sabotage curse. We returned to the theatre to see Planes today, picking a different showtime and room at the muliti-plex to avoid yesterday’s crashy hard drive problem.

We sat down with our popcorn and halfway through our first trailer – which previewed De Niro’s new film about a mob family where people are beaten, shot, blown up and hit by cars – I storm out and start hollering about its inappropriateness for children at the first Cineplex employee I see. At which point the employees in earshot turn white and start running… because they realized that meant they were accidentally playing We’re The Millers for us instead of Planes.

And then I started to laugh….

We watched Planes in the end. I really enjoyed it! We all did. There were a few holes in the plot, yes, but it was cute. Obviously a movie for the littlest ones but I liked it a LOT better than many of the highly-regarded Pixar films. I think Planes is going to become a favourite feel-good movie for a lot of families with young children. And I don’t think there’s anything bad to be said about a film where the central theme is to believe you can do great things even when others tell you not to bother trying.

(MET: Your exerience would make for a good review blurb. “Lordy, they tried to stop me and my kinfolk from seeing this film but WE persevered! Through Lightning, Gunpowder and a Heathen – we persevered and Saw it Through to the End. We liked it! We are DUSTY!” The MoMcQueen Family – We Don’t Quit EVER!

Good week at school this week means we will go to see Planes this weekend.
Don’t forget, Build and Grow at Lowes this weekend id El Chup build!

I saw it last week. My kids loved it, but I didn’t think it was really all that great. I liked Cars 2 a lot better. But then again, I didn’t like the original Cars very much the first time I saw it. I’ll still end up buying the DVD and all the diecasts.

I didn’t like Cars much when I saw it the first time either. After watching it a bunch of times, it definitely grew on me. And I loved Cars 2 right away (we might be the only two, lol). I thought Planes was a decent enough film. My son loved it. Very cool from the plane perspective shots. My only complaint was that it felt a little hallow. Not enough of that pixar magic to make you get really involved in the story…

  • NascarFan says:

I have not even seen it yet, guess I should go. Hopefully it has the same magic Cars did.

    • John in Missouri says:

It’s got the same magic as “Antz”.

      • Mike Manifold says:

It’s worth seeing once, but does not have the same magic as Cars. It’s funny that in this move season there were two movies owing much debt to Cars 1 in plot and theme, and of those two, I thought Turbo was actually the all around better made and more entertaining movie. That said, my 7-year-old liked Planes better than Turbo, Smurfs 2, and Monsters University, so what do I know?
