Ok all you scifi fans on Take5!

Courtesy of our good friends at A&E Home Entertainment, Take5 is giving away one (1) copy of the blu-ray 35th Anniversary edition of all 24 episodes of season one of Space: 1999!  This set is not available for sale in stores until next week!

When the moon takes a toot, off in space you'll scoot

I LOVED this series when it ran on pre-DVR/Tivo television back in 1975 – 1977.  It was a great lead up to this little thing that was sprung on us called Star Wars.

Developed by Gerry Anderson of the really great British scifi series from the 60’s called Thunderbirds are Go! and Supercar (check out Supermarionation), the series followed the moon base crew that got blasted out of space when a nuclear space dump on the far side of the moon exploded sending them off into deep space like a rocket.

The lead actors were married in real life:  Martin Landau (Oscar® winner) and Barbara Bain (Emmy® winner). Martin Landau is oft remembered for his recent rolls such as in Ed Wood but in his early years he played some great creepy roles such as the henchman Leonard in North By Northwest or as the cool sidekick in the original Mission Impossible tv series (which they both worked on).

Check out the show intro via Youtube here:

Yes, that kitschy music is from the series. It’s almost retro-futuristic.

The show itself was an interesting mix of intrigue and adventure with some highs and lows as most shows go through in its first season but it was reminiscent of Star Trek as it spun through new galaxies and encountered alien life forms.  Overall the show had very high production values which ultimately helped speed its demise.  The special effects at the time were very good (Oscar® winner Brian Johnson who went on to work on Alien and The Empire Strikes Back) which helped pull fans in for a bit and was light years ahead of later shows like the insipid Buck Rogers in the 25th Century (*shudder*).

One intriguing extra on the set are HD image galleries of gum and cigarette cards. How quaint!

There are 24 episodes in this blu-ray set which has a Suggested Retail Price of $99.95 (even on Amazon it will cost you over $51 + shipping) and is chock full of specials and featurettes and you can own if for free!
