Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: Showstoppers, No Doubt
The amazing thing is there were real CARS not too far off base from these Showstoppers …
A great homage to the Cadillacs, Buick’s, Lincoln’s, Ford’s and Chrysler’s of the time …
Slightly exaggerated but only slightly …
The Ford Atomic powered by nuclear power …
Hard to believe it was only a mock prototype 🙂 … Who wouldn’t want to test drive a mini nuclear plant behind your head? 🙂
Or the equally unbelievable but very real 1959 Cadillac … 225 inches LONG!
You can check out a closeup of its fins HERE along with many other outrageous tail fins of the era. The real showstoppers but we’ll take the 1:55 CARS also …
Target (Central Tacoma on Union Avenue) has gotten in the single packs of Storytellers as well as the single packs. Also, the Final Lap Cars have appeared on the pegs with Dexter and Antonio. Haulers with the new packaging also appeared. Target Lakewood still has no new items other than the three pack Storytellers. Lakewood Fred Meyer had the yellow flag Dexter its pegs. Wal-Mart in Lakewood, WA has no new upgrades and the toy department seems fairly run with most popular toys exiting the store. The only new Cars item was in the cube- “Water Logged” McQueen. Not too much difference from “Burnt Offering” McQueen.
Found Laverne, Sheila and Rhonda all at my local Target this morning. Wasn’t even there on a CARS run (they never actually have anything worthwhile), just happened to check the aisle as I was going through. Also scored a Movie Moments Tow Cap and Gaspirin and an Antonio Veloce Excellente. (Also snagged a stock DeLorean from a Hot Wheels peg.)
That DeLorean’s pretty cool, isn’t it? Nice detail on such a small vehicle.
I would like to find one of each, with and without pinstrips and taillights.
isnt this a chase car?
Not a Treasure Hunt- It’s a First Edition, #15 of 44. 1981 Delorean DMC-12. It is really nice for 97 cents or a buck. A Lot cheaper than the original.
Original Hot Wheels Delorean or the Original car?
I have other HW questions if you wnat to drop me an email
nascarnbroncosfansATmsn.com
Nice enough to get my attention from across the aisle! I’m not really a HW collector, so unlike the Barris Batmobile I wasn’t even looking for it. Glad to see it was cast stock, seems like every other model Delorean is the BTTF version (one of them). Welly made a stock DMC-12 in 1:24 scale a while ago (got one of those) as well as the BTTF verision (got one of those, too).
We now return you to our regularly-scheduled programming, already in progress.
I did find a few of these at Walmart while getting sandpaper for work today….
got paid to find 3 DeLoreans and of course RCK too.
If anyone has an error one without the stripes and tailights I would like to have one.
anyone need a DeLorean I have a spare
Spare DeLorean is gone
You buy your sandpaper at Walmart???
Love these! Picked mine up 😀 One of my favorite cars is the 1957 Chevy Bel Air. Will someone make one as a “Cars” car? LOL 😀
Derek “Decals” Dobbs is probably the closest.
I would expect him to be coming out in the Final lap assortment.
I would like to see them do this because it would clear up a small mystery for me. Pixarpedia and other sources show Derek “Decals” Dobbs as a Hollismobile Rumbler like Hank “Halloween” Murphy. However, if you look at his picture it is obvious that he is the same body type as Greta (a Brunchman Salmon Super Sport). There are minor differences, like the number of headlights, side trim, taillights, etc. but these could be custom touches or model year differences.
In case you are wondering, I argue about angels and pinheads, also.
Actually, since both Greta and Hank have been released, if Mattel does not come out with a Derek, it does matter which should be used as the basis for a conversion.
(MET: Though in the early 1950’s, many “average” sedans were not entirely dis-similar especially since there were still about 10 US manufacturers – like the Hudson Hornet and the ’49 Mercury – they are like cousins …).
I hope these are in cars 2
Rocket Cars, space age, and 10 years later the Saturn 5 rocketed to the moon in 1969.
Always loved these big heavy cars. Laverns’s cab has the portholes .. 57 Thunderbird.
my dad had 1959 and 1960 chevys with those flat fins. never did care for type of flat fins on the cars. Upright ones, yea they look great
How about a 1960 Chrysler Windsor. I had a four top hardtop, white top over black body. It weighed 3,937 pounds. Guts at Fort Dix called it the “Lead Sled.” It was wide enough that my wife could lie across the back bench seat and sleep on the way back from Surf City, New Jersey.

(MET: Looks like an ice cutter – nice!)
When these fins were still on the road in great numbers, there was a news article about a man dying from being ‘impaled’ on one of the fins. Actually, the metal surrounding the brake lights was really sharp/pointy. With nothing but street parallel parking on the streets of NYC there were a lot of hazards for kids on bicycles.
Break here. I ‘googled’ the issue and found the news article from 1999:

So, watch those toys or there may be a product recall by the Consumer Product Safety Committee! 🙂
Yea….. dare I say it?
Lead Sled?
The guys called it a ‘lead sled’ based on the length (over 17 feet, if I recall) and the weight (3,937 lbs per NY State licensing). Back then there were either family sedans or station wagons, no SUV’s. And even pickup trucks were banned from many parkways as commercial trucks. Nothing slow about the 383 engine! The speed limit on the New Jersey Turnpike and Long Island Expressway was 65 mph, and, it easily did 90. Going anything faster than 90 would make the car stand out. The speed limit was actually 80, informally. Even the Greyhound Buses did 80! Different now.
Oh, now remembering other things about that model. The length from the rear axle to the rear bumper was so long, that the bumper jack the car came with could not raise the rear tires off the deck. I had to use an scissor jack under the axle. Made it tough to find a parking spot on the streets of NYC.
Actually, the term “lead sled” referred to the heavily-reworked customs of the day — chopped ’49 Mercs (a la the Matranga Merc), sectioned ’49 Fords, ’51 Chevys with extended quarter panels framing a continental kit (like the Ernst Chevy), etc.
The term stems from the lead body filler used to blend all of that cut-and-pasted sheetmetal together.
Torches, lead filler and beeswax paddles — those were the days!
the showstoppers are so awesome! the only thing i have noticed is the paint problems are more consistant in the 3 packs than the singles… all the singles i have the paint has been perfecto! but both 3 packs i found one of the cars either had touch up paint or knicks in it.. weird???
Jumping off-topic for a second, here’s a Tomica Tokyo Mater pair!

Fin-land, that’s where all the girls are originally from! 😉
“Thank you! Thank you! I’ll be here all week. Try the veal.” 🙂
And don’t forget to tip your waiters and waitresses!
classic Mike Wizowski!!
My Dad bought a new pink and white 1958 Buick. I swear that thing had so much chrome that it looked like a mirror in places. It was NOT one of Buick’s styling masterpieces, either, but it did have the fins. One thing it did for me was inspire a love of bright colors on cars. That is one of the reasons I have a bright yellow 1992 Miata.
Now, if Mattel will only hurry up with the car hop Mias and Tias in yellow that I have seen in drawings, I will be happy. Otherwise, it is time to break out the old spray can.
Definitely the brightest and most colorful items I’ve seen in a store since Marshall Field’s Frango Mints in the mid-1970’s.
Oh I miss those real frangos. Fredrick’s and Nelson sold them in WA. Now the bon sells them at Christmas time only.
My grandparents had a pink Cadillac with the fins, just can’t wait to find these Ladies!
I think Flo had fin envy, and thats why she really left the Showstoppers.
Any word on a Mitch diecast being released?
I’m going to give away my age here but I was around when those cars were on the road. (I was very young though LOL). That’s when my love of cars began. My first car in High School was a 1955 Plymouth Belvedere, turquoise and white.

(MET: Cool ride!)
Yes, she was very cool. I forgot to mention that when I got her she was used, very used. Didn’t want you to think I was in High School in 1955. I’m not that old LOL.
(MET: I was gonna say I didn’t think you were 🙂 …)
first post!
the pink and yellow showstopper cars look great! cant wait to buy some
