Its Mater so yes of course I will buy and buy them all. A cars collection wouldn’t be complete without them.

  • Aaron & Jeanne Scriven says:

I have to say… We are still collecting them all!!! With the exception of the lenticulars with those we are doing all the townies and then I don’t think we will do any more of them lol unless we go through another dry spell haha and need a fix lol other than that we are still going strong !!

    • iamspeed says:

**Don’t forget that the NEW Sarge is a “lenti”, hard to pass on him.

Now, we have about 8 lenticular Sarges. Anyone need one?

Check out DJ…the eyes really do look good on DJ and Boost in the 2nd case….we’ve said no to the “lentis” ’til now.

      • Aaron & Jeanne Scriven says:

LOL of course i say that and we have all of case a and b hahaha i mean more like the ‘other’ cars but i guess it depends on what they are! LOL still have to find bling mcq with the cup!!!

  • Rich says:

Hey Met, what about Tokyo Mater, I did not see him in any of the
SDCC show pics, only the others?

  • acuransx says:

    Ladies & Gentlecars,

It was a nice ride. I’ll see you later 🙁

  • iamspeed says:

Actually, I kind of wish El Materdor had the snarled look on his face when he squared off with the bulldozer after digging himself out of the ground and shaking off his badly dented hood.

    (MET: I believe there are alt Materdor’s 🙂 ).

  • iamspeed says:

Just don’t forget Guido, his eyes full of tears, as he “stood” next to the priest!

  • Mia, Tia and NJM says:

What scares me is that all the cars from CARS won’t be released BEFORE the release of CARS 2. If they aren’t all made before the new group (I’m assuming the new movie will have lots of different characters) comes out, will they ever be made?

    • iamspeed says:

To save money, CARS 2 diecast will be designed by the Johnny Lightning group. Minimal detail, paint with little or no shine, quality stuff!

    • Daniel says:

Martin said the intent was to release all the Cars before Cars 2. I think Mattel will succeed.

    • hostile takeover banker says:

that was kinda what I was implying above. It seems to me they are going to slowly trickle out. And I am worried because the Toons Cars are international releases and I am therefore waiting on the ‘hit and miss’ cases of Cars Cars that arrive all the way over here in Western Oz.

Like Pirate Dad I am keeping my collection for when my son is old enough to respect them as a collector item (he has his own set to play with now). My worry is that will it be when he is 25 that I will still be collecting the releases. I would dearly love to give him a set of the 36 racers, pitcrew and chiefs. Yes the box sets look nice, but again, will they all be released and how long till they are readily available (not just in select US towns or over fee-bay)?

And yes, it is like crack. You want it so bad but sometimes you can’t just get hold of any of the stuff. Unless you know a good dealer (based in Singapore/Taiwan). And then dependig on your dealer you have a ridicuous price rise for something that was initially cheap to buy in the factory.

Again I know I am ranting, but Cars in Oz cost $10 on average, Mega Size $15-20 and 3 packs are 35-40 depending on where you go. That is a 3 fold increase on prices I have seen from people selling here and shots from the shopping centres. That means that when I find something cool (like Frank, new haulers, etc) it is hardly worth my time trying to buy them and sell them back to folks in the US. Someone is making a killing and the whole thing is really ticking me off.

  • BMW says:

So we need RM, Larry, Syd, Convoy Brothers, Albert Hinkey, Brian Park Motors (antenna ball salesman, Johnnie and Jamie, and the other 40 or so cars still not made or released in the USA (Gaskits and FWD for instance. That was my disappointment with the SDCC showing.

  • BMW says:

It was a bit of a shock to see the first shelf at SDCC dominated by Cars Toons stuff. Second shelf to Cars Cars. Third shelf lenticulars.
    Very telling.

But I am sure John Lassiter has a rein on Mattel, and won’t let Mattel forget the movie character Cars. 5 minute Car toons no matter how cute, are still not a feature length movie; in which the characters, no matter how obscure some are, have kept us loving these for 3 years.

  • snot_rod says:

    I

    WANT

    THAT

    NOW

    Ole!

  • Micky says:

I know all you guys are crazy about this line but I still don’t think I’m going there. (OK I can hear all the moans and groans) I know they’re precious 😉 but too far from the original for me. Is there anyone else out there who thinks that too, or am I alone in this.

    • Chris D says:

I agree Mickey. I probably won’t buy everything on this line. I’ll probably grab one or two that I think are really cool, and any my son really likes, and then pay attention to any that are rare.

With launchers, haulers, oversized, Kmart specials, etc, It’s getting a bit overwhelming to be a true completist anymore.

      • PirateDad says:

I wood rather have the Cars from Mater’s Tall Tales than all the Crew Chiefs and 3 of each Pitty personally, after all, I don;t think EVERY Crew Chief actually appeared in the movie, let alone 3 different Pitties for Each Racer….BUT in a perfect world I could BOTH!!!!

    • Monica says:

How can you possibly say no to these? They are fabulous!

    • hostile takeover banker says:

I am of the opinion that they are very cool but I am a bit disappointed that they are bringing out all of these Cars from the Carstoons and yet still there are heaps of characters from the movie itself still MIA. I would dearly love to see more racers, their pit crew and chiefs but at this stage to me it seems it could be ‘lightyears’ away before they are all available.
To me, it almost seems like a plan to keep us collectors hanging right in there till the end. The case assortments and a few other things have had me wondering and now at SDCC it seemed to be a lot of these Cars that were not in the movie. They all look cool, don’t get me wrong but I wonder how long it will take us and how many more Cars are released while some of us wait to finish the “Pit Row’ dream.

      • hostile takeover banker says:

In fact, it just occurred to me, with the switcheroo with everything going to Lenticular, and the Final Lap list, I don’t think even half of these pit crew cheifs and pitties were even mentioned let alone the racers. Are they ever going to be released? I know that the ever elusive Apple is a no-go and I am wondering just how committed Mattel really is to bringing the rest of these out.

(some people just want to spend lots of money – 36 racers, 36 pit crew chiefs, 36 pitties (double or triple that if you release diffent shape ones in each team) and then 36 Haulers.)

(MET: You did see the post on the Pit Crew Box Sets?)

      • Monica says:

There is no doubt in my mind that Mattel is drawing this out to Cars 2 launch, it only makes sense right? I would do the same. We would all hate them if there was a 6 month gap between the “Final Lap” and Cars 2. I do believe that they will do all the crew chiefs and pitties for a couple of reasons #1 they are easy, no new sculpts, just new paint jobs #2 Lasseter wants to be able to recreate the full MSOS.

You know, Lasseter owes us! If it weren’t for all of us rabid collectors, there’s no way the line would have lasted this long. OK, that’s it, he’s doing a panel appearance for us next year.

    • jestrjef says:

All you need is one itty bitty little shelf . . . 🙂

    • rumbler74 says:

Well Micky, it think the bottom line is that it’s just all about the money and space that it would take for one to collect all of these. It’s not about being cannon and sticking to the originals. One has to draw the line somewhere sometime. Some people may draw the line here. Me, well I am still pondering it. I love the upcoming diecasts lines and would love to “collect them all”, it’s just that it is costing me quite a bit of money and space and I too have to draw the line somewhere. Will see.

      • Daniel says:

I have to admit that with 100+ Cars coming out from the toons alone, and the price the retailers are asking, I am seriously comtemplating calling it quits with the end of Cars 1 Cars.

I doubt Canada will see the toons or even the final lap Cars and I don’t intend to eBay them or make monthly cross-border runs for 1-2 Cars. While there are many great members here who will help, I don’t think it’s fair to ask anyone to get us “2 of each”.

Plus something occured to me when my parents hit a few stores in North Eastern US in search of Cars for my boys abd their collection. Every where they went, there were collectors, be it customers or employees, that helped them. Just how many collectors are out there and just how many collections are there? I’d say a heck of a lot. Will these things be worth anything one day? Probably much less than we think.

        • Lorri says:

Well my opinion is, you should only collect what you love.
If you are just going for resale value later and have no interest in the Cars, you would be way better off buying something with a more solid record of growth.
And if you count time looking, spending time on here, storing and maintaining the collection, your return would be better if you spent that same time working for minimum wage.
          Sorry JMO.

          • Lorri says:

And, like I tell my husband “at least its not crack”

            • PirateDad says:

I really do want to hand this collection over to PirateSon when he is 18, 21, 25, something like that…we collected these together, hunted together, opened the Kmart Box together…memories I will NEVER forget, ones I want him to keep… future value of my son’s love…priceless!!!

            • 5oclockshadow says:

but it is crack .. just in diecast form… and Mattel is a very good dealer to have strung us along for this long..

              • Lorri says:

I know! its the details. Like the other day I realized for the first time, that the Mega Size Cabs actually have different expressions on their faces than the same ones that come with the haulers. I always thought they were the same. Those kind of things are what keep you coming back!

          • Daniel says:

No need to apologize Lorri…you do have a point.

I raised the topic for those who intend to sell the set later on. I personally have no intention of selling my collection as it will be for my boys to do as they chose (preferably to give to their kids). The time I spent I do not consider as time lost because, after all, it is for them.

In typing this, I’ve come to realize I will not know how to divide this set between the 2 of them (or maybe 3 should we have another child). Aaaaargh! There’s NO way I’m collecting another set, that’s for sure.

And PD you’re absolutely right. There is no price for a child’s love and happiness! Problem is, Mattel knows that.

          • hostile takeover banker says:

I’m not into it for money and I am solely doing it for the love of these little peices of perfection. I am just really cheesed off I have spent all of this money and will continue to do it and in the end I may not ever have a complete set. And the reason is solely I at this point do not think it ever looks like we will get the whole set. I know Martin may have said we may, but he is a designer and the whole packaging/case distribution thing is a completely different matter. The designs are there yes, but the question is how long till they are released in such quantities they are almost pegwarmers?
True half the fun is hunting down Cars you don’t have. But it isn’t fun ordering a Gas-kits from France with stupid rules, or a FWD. What about Sidewall shine? Slated for re-release? or just sometinh you have to fork out half a weeks salary so you can own him in a plastic box (that no other racers hardly come in). My favourite is Transberry Juice at the moment though. Never released in Australia, and who knows when he will be re-released. Again do I pay $35-40 for him opr wait and hope I can get him for a quarter of that. This is driving me CRAZY

            • hostile takeover banker says:

or do I just enter spelling/grammar classes instead?

              • MiaSenorita says:

hahaha, you are hilarious! I am feeling the same as you. I love this whole line to death – main line, storytellers, toons, minis, etc etc! BUT it is expensive and hard to have a “complete” set, not even a completist set. But I still have hope of getting the rare few I missed before while trying to keep up with the new! 🙂

        • babychristianscars says:

I don’t collect these for the value at all. I collect them in memory of my son that died as an infant, and “collect” is a loose term, his are eventually all opened, played with and enjoyed.

My dad bought my daughter the chevron cars before his death in 2007 she is 14 and still has them.

When the cars came out I knew instantly that was what I was doing my son’s “birthday” theme in, never expecting to be able to do it for the next year as well.

I know my reason for buying them may sound odd to many but its the memories and the enjoyment and the thrill of the hunt that I get.

Here’s another interesting story my parents go by tex and charlie and faux wheel drive is very very similiar to their last name. I was beyound excited to find tex just a few weeks after my dad died and now thanks to an awesome person I will own the faux wheel and get to make a nice display piece of those 3 cars.

I don’t care how fast I find the cars, the thrill of walking in the store and going WOW at a new one is good enough for me.

Unfortunately no target her so NO clue how I will get the new ones.

    • Micky says:

What a great discussion about Cars collecting. I really enjoyed reading everyones opinions. I’d like to add a bit to my original post.
There are a few reasons why I don’t think I’ll be buying this line besides the fact that they are not cannon. After all I’ll be buying the mini racers and some of the Storybook characters. I just don’t have the space to collect all this stuff. I have several large rubber storage boxes full of unopened Cars besides another set (or more) of opened Cars for display. I’m not collecting for resale (not now or in the future). We don’t have any kids, but I love the stories about collecting with the kids and having those precious memories. I’ve loved cars (trucks, trains) for as long as I can remember. I know girls are supposed to like dolls (and I do) but I think I like cars even more. When this movie came out I knew I was hooked. Bottom line is, collect what you love, enjoy what you collect 🙂
