Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: Packaging Designer Upgrade! Meet Ryan G!

When it’s something you want to hold onto and or display, especially a great line such as Mattel’s Disney Pixar CARS, you want the card & box design to be as interesting, as cool and as classy as the CARS themselves … and as I wrote when I first saw the 3-packs, I realized that Mattel finally found a world class packaging designer befitting the diecast line …

There are lots of ways to go and this is the right way versus the previous hanging blister that was dullsville.

Of course, the new card design…

Everything in the Race O Rama series is his design (other than the mainline singles) … Glad Mattel made the upgrade so we could get a visual upgrade, so say hi to Ryan G.!

In fact, Ryan has also agreed to read through any questions you might have an do a Q&A followup in a few days.

So drop your comments & questions below, when Ryan gets a chance, he’ll stop by to answer. Thanks Ryan!

His packaging design is nice but he has a LONG way to go to keep up with Senor Roach from Jada Toys! That guy is SICK!!!!

    Pirate Pop,

You are preaching to the Pope on this. Had all that and more ready to go, and it went. Away………….. πŸ™

    Outta my control πŸ™‚

    Ryan and Martin,

We heard rumours that there were thousands of N20’s and their little cass left over from the 2nd TRU promo, and perhaps that is why the 3rd was cancelled/postponed. If that is the case, sell them on Matty. wait the one year that was promised TRU and sell them there…but in the meantime…sell the 3rd promo in the little case on Matty…no one gets hurt and we get Gask-its!! Charge 5 cars plus $5 for it, in other words $25 and WE WILL PAY IT!!! You produced them, they are sitting in a warehouse, Matty is taking up valuable bandwidth doing NOTHING and we cannot get Gask-its easily from France!

Tell the Marketing Monkeys to open their eyes to the Intl market, learn from Kmart of all places and make some friggin money from the thousands of collectors out there!

I too adore the new packing improvements. As a non-opener it really helps displaying them.

    • pwschuh says:

That depends how you display them. I hate the new packaging. Not only does it cost more money, it makes the packaged CARS harder to display. I know from years of studying the diecast collecting hobby (both in the US and around the world) that most people who display packaged diecast hang it from walls, they don’t sit it on a shelf. The more CARS you own, the more likely this is to be true, since almost everyone has, or can create, more wall space then they have shelf space. In my opinion the blisters were far better for wall-hanging display. Even if you stack these new boxes vertically while hanging them, it will be much harder to actually see the cars.

    Ladies & Gentlecars,

I think both Ryan and I both hear you on replacing the more easily damaged/dinged/scraped blisters on cards with something more durable. It costs money……………..

Please remember, the next step up would/cou;d probably be acrylic cases which are way too much dough. For Matty, more Flo, sure. That was the plan @ one time. Many moons ago. Almost 11 moons, I think πŸ™

    • chuki_mama says:

Maybe Matty will wake up πŸ’‘ and still offer it? If so, there are probably a LOT of people who would buy them…

It would be nice to order an acrylic case similar to Sidewall Shine and N20 Cola with just the cars logo on it to display “cherished” cars….just a thought…

  • RyanG says:

Thanks for the warm welcome! I look forward to your questions/comments and I’ll do my best to get back to you.

I’m happy to be part of the Take 5 community!

    Thanks again,

πŸ˜€ Welcome to Take 5… It’s a GREAT place to fill your cars addiction!! πŸ˜‰

Just got my first look at the lenticular packaging and “I LOVE IT”. It’s nice to be able to look and admire the cars from all sides!! GREAT JOB!

    Hey there Dude-Ryan-Dude!

Great work! Must be a blast to do what you do…

PS – If you see Matty a work sometime, pull his shirt over his head for me will ya?!?!

    (MET: Always the troublemaker … πŸ™‚ ).

    • RyanG says:

Thank you, and yes, It is a blast. I’m really happy to be part of such an awesome line of toys.

I’ll try to send Matty a message for you. The hard part is getting the shirt over his big head. Maybe I can just check him into the boards for ya!

      Take care, ryan

  • Dunroamin says:

Since you are a designer, what do you think of the the new Star Wars Figure Packaging? I know it’s Hasbro, but you must know people involved…BTW…the only Cars packaginf that I thinkw as not in keeping with the other cars was the WOC mega size with the brown stripes…it was a bit wierd…kinda glad it went away…though in the end, I must admit that your packages end up split into 2 recycling bins…paper and plastic cuz we are openers and loving every minute of it!

    • RyanG says:

I think the new SW packaging is great. The guys who design the packaging are an incredibly talented group working out of Boston called “Pilot”. http://www.creativepilot.com/

I know them well. They are a good bunch. I’ve worked with them on some other projects like our new WWE packaging coming out on 1.1.10.

Even though I am a packaging guy, I must admit, I’m an opener too!

  • rumbler74 says:

Hi Ryan! I echo pretty much everyone else’s sentiments by saying great job with the overall new packaging designs as compared to the previous ones. My question is, have you yourself or anyone else from Mattel ever considered using a hard plastic window design, and if so, what is the hold up? It does not necesarily have to be acrylic since it can be very expensive, but maybe an inexpensive alternative like styrene. It’s just that it seems that alot of items, especially the Target Exclusive Team Haulers and 3 packs, seem design for display only and not necesarily to open, hence why I pose the question. Maybe you can come up with a packaging with the hard plastic styrene window for display, but with certain access on the side to the CARS for whoever wants to take them out or maybe add a little something else, like a new CAR release that is related to the displayed CARS. I know it would be a bit more pricey, but I would gladly pay for it since I am displaying them anyway (the extra second singles are the openers). The current plastic packaging is just too flimsy and easily gets damaged with scuffs and those anoying “white creasing lines” which are usually found on the display package itself straight from the box; created during shipping and/or by employee mishandling. It’s hard to find a real good mint package for display with the current window plastic. If you can’t do it for all, maybe some limited edition ones would be nice. Again, I would buy them. Who is with me?

  • Mr. T says:

I like all the packaging too – very eye catching and great for display. I am sure that Ryan does not get enough credit for his great design.

I can definitely appreciate the work that goes into it! Unfortunately I do not keep any of the packaging.

    OPEN THEM ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Flik'sFriend says:

I would have to say that I love all the packaging!!! All my Cars are still safely sealed in their blister packs!

  • L8rM8r says:

Yeah I have to say I like the new 3 pack displays so much I have yet to open mine yet. I am sure I will soon, but I just really like the way the look. Also the Haulers packaging is great and currently still in their plastic cage.

Great work and with this being the 5th iteration of cardback design for the mainline singles will this be the last until the new movie comes out?

    • RyanG says:

      Thank you L8r,

I’m thrilled that everyone is digging the haulers. Martin and his guys did a great job delivering an awesome product. I was happy to help package it up for him.

Yes. The new 2010 blue/red look will carry us until CARS 2.

      thx, ryan

  • PirateDad says:

Ryan, the new packaging makes displaying so much easier and appealing, thank you!

Question…. What you eat your smarties, do you eat the red ones last?

  • acuransx says:

    Ladies & Gentlecars,

    Ryan G. is a POSER. I’M the Man!!!!!!!!!!!!! πŸ™‚

Just kidding…….Ryan”The Real Deal”Gleason is the man. My Design team works closey with him with my Cars product, he’s cool. BTW, don’t even think about saying anything uncool cause he’s also 6’5″ @ about 225 lbs πŸ™‚

    You go RG.

  • Ka-Chow says:

I have to agree that this line is a work of art, and with the latest packaging designs, they are harder to resist. If only mattel would get their act together in distribution so all of us can get them!
