Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: The International Story

Let’s cut to the chase, it doesn’t have a happy ending.

People are always asking about an international schedule or what goes on there.

All I can say is that they are their own division and make their own decisions and they seem to think everything is just fine.

In a small way, it makes sense, CARS is not on the same international level as Mickey, Barbie, or even Hot Wheels so it is a tougher battle to get shelf space and and it seems that the international group probably has to manage a couple dozen toy lines where here in the US, most groups have people solely devoted to that toy line – so it’s a battle to devote as much time to CARS as they would to Barbie, DC or Hot Wheels.

Conversely, it’s hard to grow the business if you don’t seem to try very hard – the bottom line is they just don’t seem that interested in CARS … yes, I find it hard to believe they cannot get anything new to Canada for months on end … in case, they haven’t noticed, there are some Canadian cities further South than some US cities. And Mattel seems to claim that their North American distribution center is in Canada (Mississaugua, Canada – on the back of EVERY CARS item) … but yet no CARS seems to reach that building? Tax reasons? Is it just a storage shed? πŸ™‚

So, going forward, it looks like International will only be getting the lenticular CARS … which on an cost decision makes sense since they are joining the US production – just changing the card design but of course, to people who have been collecting all along overseas … it’s not exactly the world greatest message but since Mattel Int’l thinks everything is swell concerning CARS, they don’t even notice … at least eBay is happy πŸ™ and of course, hopefully we can help our overseas collectors via the Trading Board … on the good side, it looks like mater Tall Tales will get a big push overseas so here’s hoping you find all those diecasts.

I think that the signs for the new lenticular cars (if anybody wants to collect them) in Europe are good. Looks like we will get them just as fast as the US (or quicker).

They already are in the orderingcomputer in our store.
Pricelevel is the same as the regular singles.

More details when I get them.

    • Lampit, UK says:

I had a retread in my Tesco’s basket yesterday, when I got to the checkout, the cashier said it is not on file. After standing there for ten minutes, a man with headphones came over, took the retread and said ‘sorry, sometimes things fall off the system, we cannot sell it to you’. and he took it away πŸ™ NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO !!!!!

(MET: That seems a bizarre way to, um, not do business).

    Ladies & Gentlecars,

It’s a Marketing thang, not my call. Shouda been for sale on Matty so you all could click and buy at a reasobale price, eveyone’s happy. Just like my MOTU Action Figures. Every figure sells out pretty quickly although the MOQ is pretty low. All we need to do is run the numbers for a decent RIO.

    Again, not my call.

I’m just hoping that when Cars the Global Race we will go Global as well.

I feels your pain but cannot help πŸ™

  • Jeaks says:

There is no cindarella ending here. Just gonna end in tears for everybody.

The strange thing is that we are closer to the factories in China than US.

The international story is uglier than a caryard full of volvos.

  • hostile takeover banker says:

well my interest has been dwindling with all this news and if it seems now that ‘the rest of the world’ is not as important as the toy market in the US(make that not as profitable). This is just crap. Mattell should realise that by screwing people over with this line, people will probably not ever invest in any other new line. That is they are taking away something which has a dedicated loyal following by many, and telling people by way of decisions that we should only be interested in HOtWheels, Barbie and other established lines. My 3yo doesn’t even know what a Hot Wheel car is meant to do, he just looks at it and wonders why it doesn’t have eyes (i.e. personality). He certainly doesn’t like Barbie.

Looks like Ebay and traders on T5AD will now by my place to buy these items I still want.

  • cars-in-your-eyes says:

Well, can’t be too bad, as I found evidence of ROR case E while shopping yesterday and found 4 red wheel Marios! 8)

We have also had 4 different cases of ROR Movie Moments.

  • Roswell says:

screw mickey, barbie and hot wheels, noone likes those has-beens,
cars sales are down cus of some dipstick who decides to put 10 LMQ in each case.

at my local sainsburys, they have had the same case since october, for the last month an a half they have had a clear storage tub filled withonly LMQs and Lightening Ramones, theres about 20 in there, and they wont put anything new out or even order anything new until all or most of the cars are bought, but noone wants them, people already have them or they just dont want a 5th ramone or 25th mcqueen!

and as cars sales are down because of this, the distributors presume people dont want cars, well we do, we want new ones!!!!!!

this is why i dicided to quit,

    • Mike H says:

Of course, they’ll go to old reliables like Mickey, Barbie and Hot Wheels because it’s name-brand recognition: they’ve been around for years.

Companies tend to quit pretty easily when it comes to new products. You almost never hear of a product coming out of the blue, and then sustaining itself as the next wunderkind of toydom (is that even a word? Either way, I like it).

Of course, regarding PIXAR, they’ve had a glut for merchandising, at least according to the people who see product placed for the films. Ratatouille and Wall-E were considered ‘busts’ because they didn’t have a way to put out lots and lots of toys. The picture doesn’t look at all rosy for ‘Up’ either (haven’t heard any word of Carl or Russell figures). But then, the retailers and distributors are smacking their lips for 2010, when Toy Story 3 comes out. The idiots are happy because it’s a film that has a return to core characters, and they can just hock something that’s already been established.

That’s one thing I hate: noone wants to take a chance on a newcomer. People just want the ‘sure thing.’

    • iamspeed says:

Buy up the CARS that are left, forcing them to bring out new cases, then return those CARS after you’re lucky enough to find some new ones.

      • Roswell says:

that sounds way too risky, for all i know they may have another 3 cases of the same (international case w/ chuki, pit crew filmore and lightening ramone)

      • Daniel says:

Been there, done that. They just keep getting the same case, sometimes even older cases, even when the new stuff is out elsewhere. But who knows, maybe you’ll get lucky?

  • Matt says:

I’m in Nebraska, and I just heard Jack-Daddy’s head explode..

  • John in Missouri says:

Once I win the lottery, I promise I will buy an RV, convert it into a Mobile Cars Retail Outlet (MACRO for short), and will drive it all around Canada, the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Turkey, and Missouri, selling Cars like the Ice Cream Man of my youth.

  • buckland-blowouts says:

yeah! Just wait for Cars Deux my Canuck/international buddies out there…

Then McQueen will be invited to ALL the hip parties that Barbie and Mickey go to…

  • Daniel says:

    WOW. This really sucks.
