Mattel Disney Pixar CARS: 2-Piece Lightning McQueen, Last Chance?

For variant collectors, one of the most obscure release was this oddball 2-piece Lightning McQueen included with the Lightning Fast Speedway trackset.

While they had started to release other versions of Lightning McQueen with a segmented front face such as Lightning McQueen with (the front) Shovel – original Lightning McQueen during the CARS 1 era (2006 to 2010) was always a unibody … except for this ONE oddball release.

… That came with this set only – the Lightning Fast Speedway trackset. It was not only one of the last sets with a metal diecast but with the oddball 2-piece segmented variant Lightning McQueen.

As you can see, most collectors were reluctant to buy a trackset at $29.99 (older versions were $19.99) just for the Lightning variant but this seller on eBay seems to have a few on hand without the trackset which isn’t really canon anyway.

So, perhaps the last chance?

If you’re a variant ALL collector, you might want to add this one to your collection.

The seller also has the oddball error variant – Red Tint Clear Coat Radiator Springs Lightning McQueen.

Unlike other error variants that usually last for maybe one case, this one persisted for about 6 months of release … along with a error variant – red tint clear coat Cruisin’ McQueen.

Thanks for posting this one, Met. One of the only variants that has eluded me is the 2-piece McQueen. Of course, this will be coming from China so my hope it isn’t like nearly everything else coming from China’s back door channels (defective, scratched, chipped, etc). Just purchased one, so we’ll see. When it gets here sometime next month, I’ll let you know if it’s ‘clean’.

If you look at the way the radii are at the corners, this one should match the metal body of the “flying tongue out” McQueen. All the other face plates on McQueen feature a sharper corner radius on the face plate. In Met’s books it is called “Tongue Lightning McQueen”, with the tongue down and curled to the left side (as opposed to “Finish Line McQueen”).

Speaking of Red Tint Clear Coat Radiator Springs Lightning McQueen, I noticed in the latest set of 2-packs with McQueen and Sally that McQueen was looking rather Red Tint Clear Coated again, I guess rehab didn’t stick, LOL.

(MET: Interesting. No wonder that guy has some to sell. 🙂 ).

    Hey Met,

    Since we’re talking Chinese backdoor,

Any word on the release of Brian Gearlooski Rip Clutchgoneski Crew Chief?

(MET: Yep, coming soon – only 2-pack left TBR).

A couple US dealers have sold the two-packs on eBay already. They should be in stores as fast as the current two-packs move out.

Thanks for the update John. We really appreciate the GREAT info and pics you provide!

Met does all the heavy lifting. I take so many pictures as a way to keep my sons interested in collecting; they have outgrown playing with them.

Its that time of year again when we are talking about whether to collect for 2016 or stop once we find the last couple of 2015s.

I think this has been the best collecting year ever. The new Cars were clever and creative and there were no Chases. The real difference was in Amazon leaking the poster back in January instead of our having to wait until Mattel officially released it in July. Instead of spending half the year trying to track case letters, we knew what was coming, (not when), and it was far more relaxed and fun to collect.

Please Mattel, release the 2016 poster ASAP.

    Seller has 17. Sniff… sniff… do I smell backdoor?
