Target Canada Closing – All Bow, No Arrow …

Target Canada is no more. After an ambitious launch, they are taking a more than $5 billion dollar writeoff …

New Target Store

Blow by blow on all the things Target did wrong. Read at Gawker & Fortune.

As for CARS & PLANES, it seemed that Target Canada did not get much stock and it was cheaper just to drive to the US. So, it backs to the way things were.

This is a major bummer. It’s going to put 17,600 Canadians out of work. And I can’t even hazard a guess as to who might take the place of Target in those retail spaces. They built some monster-huge stores, the last of which in Winnipeg was opened at the end of October 2014. Target is my nearest go-to store for things so I was there three times a week, usually in the early morning or late in the evening. It was never busy. Therefore, it was obvious something was up at Christmas when the regular employees were joined in droves by uber-alert-looking types who were clearly from head office. Now I understand the reason. So so SO many mistakes were made that were obvious to everyone except the people making them.

Canadians are cheap, not stupid, so no one expected American prices BUT Target for toys was more expensive by as much as 25 per cent over Toys R Us. And you guys know how high TRU sets their pricing. It put people off. Plus, the empty shelves never really improved.

Aside from their own mistakes and empty shelves, there is one huge reason Target failed. While Target stumbled miserably, WalMart Canada did their jobs right. Consumers went there instead. In some of the old Zellers locations Target refused WalMart increased sales by 400% over time.

Target (USA) does NOT help itself with it’s “stuck-up” and better then you attitudes – especially towards collectors.

Target has store exclusive toys but, never has them in stock and refuses to search back stock for toys in general.

While other Target stores seem to have all the latest and greatest toys in stock all the time – the Target stores here NEVER stock their own store exclusives and very rarely get “new” merchandise?

We collectors cannot buy what the store does not stock!

More often then not, we leave Target stores EMPTY handed.

(MET: If you have a smartphone, you can download the Target app which shows in-store stock so if it shows it in stock, you can show it to an employee and ask – it says it’s in stock, where is it?).

Read through the Gawker articles yesterday. There is some very interesting inside Target employee emails posted in some of the articles.
