Mattel Disney Pixar CARS: Overspray Lenticular Radiator Springs Lightning

From about October 2008 to May 2009, for oddball reasons, RS Lightning and Cruisin’ Lightning McQueen were oversprayed with red after the tampo decals were applied – no one seemed to have noticed for the 8-9 month period at quality control – while technically a variant, it’s release was so common and by then, everyone who wanted one pretty much had a RS or Cruisin’ LM so not much attention was paid to them.

You can read and see photos from our last post on the topic.

But Mark T. has uncovered a previously forgotten one – an oversprayed lenticular Radiator Springs Lightning McQueen which was clearly released in the first few waves (before the card design changed to the Night Skyline motif).

Red LM

So, for completist completist collectors, maybe there’s also an overspray Cruisin’ Lightning McQueen …

Don’t you think it’s just that the white of the decals just wasn’t “thick” or “white” enough to sufficiently cover the red beneath, rather than red overspray?

(MET: The most likely explanation is the clearcoat that is supposed to seal the paint and tampo decals was contaminated with red paint. It is weird and not so weird that no one at Mattel noticed for 6 months …).
