Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: In the Blink of an Eye … Changing, Changing, Changing

There is a season …

Well, we know Todd will be in it …

So, the classic eyed CARS looks like it will be back to the mainline for CARS 2 … but lenticulars might be back in a few years … meanwhile, hello eBay …

Yea, good luck finding me with the open & closing eyes …

  • NO Lenticulars says:

Well thank goodness for those that haven’t had it up to their rearview mirrors with Mattel’s ridiculous changes to this line.

The googly eyes were the begining of the end for a lot of people. My family only looks for the Final Lap now so our buying days are almost over.

Playmobil and LEGO thank you kindly though Mattel. They think your marketing department is great. In fact just the other day an army of LEGO minifigures were holding a Mcqueen hostage at the Curio Shop. It’s doubtful he’ll ever be set free since minifigures out number Mcqueens 2-1 at my house now.

The primary reason for lenticulars was simply to try and bridge the gap between the movies. While at the same time giving lenticulars( 2 different types) a test run.
After over 3 years of releasing all of the main, variants, secondary and now any possible character, no matter how small the part, it was just another way to try and milk the biggest selling Disney merchandising movie of all time.
With a new movie coming gimmicks won’t be necessary for awhile. I am sure Cars 2 will be made with the amount of die cast cars that can be sold well in mind. There will be many more characters in this one. Probably 5 different race sets at least. With all kinds off pit crews, announcers, fans, race track workers and everything else.
Eventually though I do expect some types of gimmicks though. I don’t think Mattel can resist.
I can’t wait for the freshness of a new movie though. Last week walking around the stores with all the TS3 toys around, I just couldn’t keep from thinking how good this time next year will be for us Cars Fans.
I do wonder if they will immediately start working on Cars 3 right after 2.

Jack I 100% completely agree with your thoughts on this. One thing I’d like to add is that I do think that they created the lenticular as a way to release all the cars that were already made without disappointing the collectors that got in in 2006 when this all started. Some of the cars have a value that is substancially more than they originally cost. How do you think collectors would feel if they released another round of ALL the painted eye cars now. It would decimate the preceived market for these cars. What if they came out with Blu-ray McQueen again? It would really tick off alot of people. Now Blu-ray is still one of the few that I don’t have but I’m not shelling out $100 for it either. Only thing worse than the pegs clogged with lenticulars was the pegs clogged with 90% McQueen variants. I’m glad they did it this way even though cars hunting is basically not fun for me anymore because I have a 1 in 100 shot of finding something new. I look forward to Cars 2 when the hunt will be on again.

  • Steve AKA: Poppa says:

I don’t know how the lenticular concept ever got out of product development. Mattel never overcame the ‘three-four eye’ effect. Why dump something on the market that is a development failure? Did Mattel think parents and kids would buy more Cars because of the effect? Mattel should have cut their loses months ago. I have not bought a single lenticular with the exception of a new castings only available with lenticular eyes. I suspect Mattel warehouses are crammed full of these monsters and we’ll see a seasonal push in the fall to rid the world of them.

  • jmularczyk says:

    Makes perfect sense.

  • Micky says:

Glad to see the blinkies going. I wish they would re-issue the blinkie chase cars in fixed eyes. That would be great. Next Mattel should retire the color change cars. They just take up peg room that would best be filled with main line cars.

  • lou says:

for all the haters, at least give Mattel some credit for finally realizing that the lenty’s are a total disaster and putting an end to them.

  • traver says:

I don’t know about whether or not Met does Joke posts, but my sources tell me that this information being reported may come to be sooner rather than later! so, maybe the hardest of all cars might be the lenticulars after all, so shall we call them RETIRED??

    • BMW says:

Hardest of all Cars? I don’t think so. They are clogging the pegs here and elsewhere. And if they are retired, so be it. Hardcore completists buy them yes, and new collectors, because they have no other choice unless they buy classic collections that others are giving up, or resort to ebay for fixed eyes, which would be expensive. And if they don’t finish the lenticular line then lenticular collectors will never get all the Cars unless they buy both types.

No it was not well done from the beginning with the open and close, and the cross eyed three eyed monsters are horrible. Most collectors I know only resort to getting the lenticulars for the chase versions. The beautiful Ransburg King was a prime example of a great paint application that was put on a 3 eyed car. No thanks. Loved the sculpt and Car but hated that we could only get it in that form.

    • 5oclockshadow says:

Well Burlington Coat Factory is getting the Lenticular 1.0 cases. Go there and stock up if you think they are going to be rare.

Personally, I will stay far away from them.

  • L8rM8r says:

I am really surprised by this move. I figured that they would never go back to the classic eyes. I mean they even changed over the chase cars. I like many will believe it when I see it.

  • 5oclockshadow says:

Almost too good to be true

where did this info come from?

hopefully they won’t replace this gimmick with another one …

  • Matt says:

I really think it is funny after all this time, and the con games by Mattel that you all are falling for this again!! Can’t you see it. They will lure you in with regular eyes…. get almost half way through the collection, and then change the rest to lenticular exclusive release crap.

Glad to be out of that rat race. For your own sanity, I would stay away.

  • Shadow_Faststart says:

I don’t know if this is good news or bad news. The lenticulars were allowing me to keep money in my wallet. If they start putting out new cars with the regular eyes, I might have to start spending again!

  • DJBENNETT22 says:

    yyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

i wonder if there starting the cars 2 line with 16 charecters again! thad be sweet.

  • Finally! My wish for the Cars 2 products to have regular eyes finally came true!

  • Man-I-Fold says:

This is such great news and an incredibly funny post that I had to come back and read it again! Can I get this post inscribed into my brain somehow – is there an app for that yet?

  • Carlos says:

For those who think it’s a joke, I trust Met. I’ve been reading this blog for a while and alot of the stuff is true. He even said he doesn’t do “joke” posts. I’m so happy lenticulars are done. Also, any more semis comming out in megasize, just wondering?

  • christianscars says:

    awesome news.

  • Chris says:

This is GREAT news! I was not going to touch the Cars 2 line if they were lenticular, but now I’m definitely in!

  • Mike H says:

    Too little, too late.

Cars 2 may get the fixed eyes, but I’m tired of getting the runaround, Mattel. If you want me to collect stuff: stop treating me like a poor errand boy.

I’m done playing the pitties/crew chiefs game, and I’m not getting into the haulers with the exception of Jerry.

  • cac1959 says:

Looks like it could be another one of Mater’s Tall Tales… as told by Met…

Great post… good news… Fixed eyed Cars may force me to reconsider not collecting the Cars 2 products…

  • MackDaddy says:

Very creative Met! You crack me up!! 😆

  • Ace Diamondrunner says:

Awesome post, Met…totally fun and creative in the spirit of Cars itself.

  • Carlos says:

Yes! Finally! Goodbye and good riddance. I’m SO glad they’re over. I always hoped they’ed end since the day I heard they were making them. This is great news and thank goodness. I hope that that Walmart and Toys R Us can carry Final Laps too, and Target can get more Octane Gain Crew Chief sets. I am so glad they’re done.

  • Hostile Takeover Banker says:

I believe in Met but I also don’t hold Mattel to anything they say anymore…

.. and I want that Apple Race Car!

  • christina says:

    thank goodness!

  • kdthomas says:

    Source?

  • chuki_mama says:

    Later, blinkin’ Mater!

  • Aaron & Jeanne Scriven says:

woooo hoooo!!! thats great news!!! 🙂

  • NascarFan says:

About time we get rid of the lenticulars

  • Rippers says:

Thank goodness! The Lenticulars where a horrid mistake

  • BMW says:

    Good bye and good riddance.
Oh if anyone wants any, come to Texas, we have huge Walmarts with lenticular pegs 20 wide and crammed full.

  • PirateDad says:

I wood like to make the GENIUS who came up with them black and blue eyed!!!

  • buckland-blowouts says:

Awe really !?!?!?!! Is this the end of them blinkies?!?!?! Too bad – – They were groin’ on me… A little too much like a fungus but…
