Mattel Disney Pixar Diecast CARS: Kmart CARS Day 3 A Hit! Let’s Do it Again!

It looks like the Kmart CARS Collector Days events goes smoother and smoother … no one seems to have faced a riot and in most cities and stores, plenty to go around.

Other than self inflicted injuries 🙂 …

“Beav” from a Niceville had a nice time …

You say, 5912? “Yo, Right here!”

You said 5, I’ll take these 5.

The “Master” Cartons. Lord of all that all cartons and ruler of all cardboard related box like items …

Finally getting some Sun …

Of course, just visit “Dorvack1” if you actually want to see 5 Master Cartons all opened …

Open
I do not spy any lenticulars … 🙂

Open2

Okay, Dorvack1 did buy more CARS than you …

And ‘Rowland & Timmy’says it was all a treat – no trick!

“Here’s some pictures from today’s event in my kmart in Tollesson AZ. We had 8 cases to go around 5 people. They didn’t even bother giving tickets out. Hope all Cars day would be this painless. And oh, did anyone else had problems scanning the barcodes when they got to the cashier?

Or maybe Kevin NascarBronco bought the most?

But Becky R has it all figured out!

No Kmart in her town – no problem – dad & mom to the rescue! – Dad wades in while mom documents the blow by blow 🙂

Dad-Wayne is not going to forget ‘the list.’ Though I’m sure for his daughter, he’s memorized it – just a backup … And Becky points out that dad literally wears different hats for the season or tasks … in this case, “I’m on a mission so don’t get in my way …” 🙂

Good solid selection …

Double checking the list … Is that a ’35’ after Sheriff?

As the song says, “I just want candy & CARS …”

Becky’s wall of CARS (well, one wall 🙂  ).

But just as nice as her pics? Becky’s mom wrote us a poem! Too nice!

K-Mart Collectors CARS Day III

‘Twas the day of the big K-Mart “Cars” event
So armed with a camera & the list Becky sent
We were off to the store hoping to be there on time
Oh Yes! To be late would be such a crime
Back to the aisles where shelves of toys are displayed
We looked for the table where the Cars would be displayed
But, Alas! They aren’t there! Too early I guess.
Oh here comes a cart loaded with boxes! Is it them? Oh yes!
Wow! Boxes of Cars piled all upon the table!
“You can help open them if you are able.”
We need Rubber Tire racers, Leakless, N20 Cola, & Octane Gain
Those are just a few with the silliest name!
There’s Rev’n Go, Re Volting, Trunk Fresh & Vinyl Toupee
I’ll just look in this box if I may
Yeah, I need Brand New Maters, the Sheriff & Lighting McQueen
Also Yellow Ramone, aren’t these the classiest Cars you’ve ever seen?
What fun it is to search thru the boxes looking for the ones that we needed
No pushing or shoving everyone is polite so our searches go on unimpeded
Our carts are all full, what a profitable day!
Now it’s up to the cash register we must go to pay!

Thanks Becky & Sandy & Wayne for the great poem & pics!

My report – less poetry in motion …

While in other parts of the country, there might’ve been many more left on the shelf – this is what was left after 24 cartons … going by my closest store, looks like Octane Gain & Trunk Fresh are pulling up the rear in terms of popularity?

Table2

Though not for long – by 9 PM, ALL the Piston Cup racers were gone …

There were other things you could buy with your coupon …

Or the official chocolate bar of TakeFiveADay.com …

T5 Box

Yep. chock full of nuts …

So, glad to hear the event went smoothly for seemingly everyone. And it’s a GOOD thing that there are CARS left over. Some of it can be attributed to the pre-sale so it’s a less frenzied during the day of the event and sure, some of it can be attributed to the economy – two or three less people per store means another X number available … but outside of speculators who are hoping to make 10 times the return in a few hours, it’s great that it is ORDERLY and FUN instead of CRAZY and RIOTY.

Personally, I like the fact that I can go to a store at a specific time and within a reasonable amount of waiting time (10-15 minutes), I am nearly 100% assured of buying what I want – that I do not have to see the WORST in people – as ALL I want to do is buy some CARS.

AND …

If you cannot drop everything to stand in line, you can be arrive much later to buy them and/or at worst – perhaps have to go a second Kmart to complete your 7 … that unlike other CARS items, you do not have to race around from store to store and HOPE they have it or HOPE that a store clerk will bring out merchandise to the selling floor.

This is the way it should be. If you can make it there at 11 AM – great – you are nearly 100% certain all over the country to be able to buy these 7 CARS or if you have kids, maybe 14 or 21 of these CARS. But if you cannot make it exactly then, you can still pick up some – drive to another store and pick some up and/or check on trading forum where people will be happy to sell you some at around the price they paid.

NOT FRENZIED. NOT CRAZIED. But orderly, reasonable and fulfilling – after all, what is the point of making TOO FEW of something.

And this way, it is good and great it’s on the shelf because instead of 1,000 lightning McQueen’s – maybe a mom/dad & a 2-year for the first time will see Octane Gain or N20 Cola racer and think – this looks like a fun CAR to go along with McQueen. So, unless you are a speculator, you want these CARS to go on a peg and hang around for at least a few days or weeks.

So, sure, the distribution is not perfect and obviously there are places harder hit by the economy than others selling tens of thousands of diecast CARS in ONE hour or a few hours is still pretty impressive and at over 3x the revenue of a Hot Wheel … But overall, a solid success especially since we do not need as much shoving and fighting in our stores (or with kids around watching grown ups act like rabid hyenas …).

Is it more fun to wait for 3 hours in line in hopes you can get concert tickets or actually be in line for the concert?

So, glad to hear it went well.

Yes, it will be 2010 before we see CARS Day 4 – probably Spring … but no reason that it won’t happen … so open up & enjoy your rubber-like tire CARS.

And remember the special T5-Kmart coupon (banner link) is still good on SUNDAY, OCTOBER 18, 2009 – LAST DAY though!

So, thanks everyone for the great, cute pics and next year – I expect a poem from everyone! 🙂

I’m new to Take 5 A Day, so forgive my ignorance. Does Take 5 give us advance notice/e-mail of the K-Mart Days? There are several K-Marts in the area, but naturally all the other side of town; so I rarely get to see their window sign announcements.

    Thanks!
    Rob

(MET: Yes, you’ll get plenty of warning 🙂 The next one, if there is one might be spring 2010 …).

  • louis house says:

well the kmart in lancaster ca had 20 box an 10 people came only they did not sale much if you live california an you need this for your collection there many there… there only one kmart in A.V is not hard to find….

most people only took home 3-5 cars per person….

  • snot_rod says:

That was fun. Next time, let’s do it with some Mater Tall Tales special releases. Dragon style McQueen with rubber tires? Ka-Chow!

  • L8rM8r says:

Well said and yes it is nice to not have to worry about running around here and there to try and find that ever elusive car that may be hanging on a peg somewhere just waiting. All went well and glad it did for so many as well and hope that there will be more to come.

  • rdivizio says:

Why don’t you just count the cars above at the very top of the page.
    You will see 7 cars.

  • bryan decker says:

The Kmart in Wayne New Jersey still has 4 cases worth of cars so if anyone still needs and you live near there pick .em up. The address is 1020 Hamburg tpk. Wayne n.j. if you got a g.p.s. id put them up for yea and ship them but im going to florida sat.

  • pwschuh says:

I’m not sure why people keep saying there were 7 new cars. I only counted (and bought) six new cars. Are people really buying another Leakless just because it has ‘synthetic rubber tires’ instead of synthetic plastic tires? I don’t get it.

(MET: Well, technically they are re-releases so if you’re going by that measure – none are ‘new’ but these are the first EVER releases of these CARS with rubber tires – so there are 7 new releases because there is a difference between these and previous releases – whatever value you assign to them is up to you).

    • PirateDad says:

The rest aren;t ‘new’ either though…all have been released on one form or another…promo, launcher, single, LYLauncher, etc….

      • pwschuh says:

The promo’s are not “releases” in the sense that you can buy the car at your store. And even for those who bought extra (or even duplicate) CARS just to get the promos (or bought them on e-bay), they weren’t packaged properly to display with the other blister packs. While some of these cars may have been available in launchers, I know many people (including myself) who don’t buy the launchers, so having a car by itself in a package amounts to the release of a car that has not been available to us before. So, for those of us looking to build a collection of just the carded characters from the movie, there were six new releases at K-Mart this week. The other two people who showed up with us on Saturday must have agreed because they walked away with just the same six cars that my daughter and I each got.

(MET: As a general rule, even as a singles only collector for any line, a tire variant is a significant release change so it is always considered ‘NEW.’ An accessory inclusion is less important but it is still considered a significant variant. You of course are free to collect whatever and anything you like but by all regular measurements, it is considered ‘NEW.’ (not to mention – an exclusive and packaging limited in the US).

  • rdivizio says:

My LEAKLESS came with REGULAR TIRES (NOT RUBBER)
    Check your packages.

  • PiratePrincess says:

My dad, brother and I are SO sad we did not get to go….oh well, maybe next time!!

  • Murpheeie says:

Okay I know you spent lots yesterday but there is still a Gaskits available. 100% of this auction goes to Cars Cares and Met is stumping up $100 for any Take 5 member who wins. I’m all ou at $220 but hopefully someone else can get in here and push for $300! Come on guys especially if you “need Gaskits”.

  • swb says:

for some reason 4 kmarts i decided to take a look hundreds of cars noo vinyl toupee

  • LoolarMcQueen says:

We didn’t have a chance to make it over – tougher to do now with a one-month old baby – but I hit it later that afternoon on my way to a video job (banquet video for pop warner football team), and I was able to get multiples of every racer except Vinyl Toupee – only one on the pegs (which I took).

I only took one Leak Less and Rev N Go just to have a rubber wheels version, but I got doubles of N2O, Re-Volting, Trunk Fresh and Octane Gain, all of which we only had one of. Would have gotten another Vinyl Toupee, but happy to get one. I did actually order a case, but have my doubts as to whether it can be trusted; so I may be posting a lot of extras for trade in the next week or so if it does actually materialize.

  • marcus' mom says:

I have a LeakLess with “Rev n Go” Tag and a LeakLess with a “Vinyl Toupee” tag. Where would I post the pics of these?

    kristidowning@cox.net

  • Monica says:

Yesterday I forgot the mention the funniest part of the day. After all the extras were put out on the table for the free for all and most everyone had gotten their fill, I was emptying a box to cart my Cars home in and a lady wandered by and was perusing the table and chose…wait for it…lenticular McQueen!

(MET: I’m sure she was thinking – man there’s a lot of weird CARS for this line – finally, ONE I recognize! 🙂 ).

  • handoe213 says:

Kmart day went GREAT this time in North Hollywood, CA. There was 12 cases and about 20 people. This time i took reinforcements (my girlfriend and son)for the raffle tickets and i was the 3rd one to be called and my son 7th. In the end i was able to get 2 sets of racers and NO LENTICULARS(not collecting those)and some extras. Everybody got what they wanted and they still had tons leftovers. The great thing was there was way more racers than lenticulars, thanks mattel. Bring on Kmart days 4.

  • PirateDad says:

SOOOOOOO there were Lenticulars in the case….WEIRD…you mean MET was RIGHT???? The Wizard of Cars Strikes Again!!

  • PoPeYe says:

    K-Mart Day Was Great!

We Got All That We Needed!

    Can’t Wait For The Next!

    Haikuse Me =)

  • Bombero1956 says:

After my problem with our water heater I did manage to visit my K-mart. All they had left was 2 Rev-n-Go, 1 Leakless and 1 Trunk Fresh. Don’t know if they stashed the extras in back or if they were all sold. The next closest store had nothing at all on the pegs.

  • cac1959 says:

Good time in the western Ohio and eastern Indiana area… In fact, I headed up to Muncie (IN) this morning hoping to find Team Crew sets at Target… I stopped at the Kmart and there had to be at least 60 racers still on the shelves… I got 1 more Vinyl Toupee, 2 more Octane Gain, and 1 more Rev N Go… Vinyl Toupee seems to be the one selling out – only 2 per case and it was only out in the Dinoco 400 set and a UK promo before.

Here’s hoping for a Cars 4 event… Thank you, Kmart.

  • CanadianSteve says:

I wish we had days like this in Canada. Is anyone gonna post a picture of the poster they gave out?

  • Glenn H. says:

Becky R., your dad could almost pass for a Carroll Shelby look-a-like! As my son and I were reading this post and we got to your pics he said, “Dad, the Shelby guy collects Diney Cars!”. Too cool!

  • Aaron & Jeanne Scriven says:

great day kmart!! and thank you mattel for the CORRECT case assortments!!!

  • Shelby says:

Hey! I DID use my coupon on Smurfs!!!!

  • Cappy says:

My Second Son easily picked up a set of racers for me at 11:00 (I had a soccer game to coach). Around 3:00 PM, out of curiosity, I went by another, more rural K-mart just to see. The had *gobs* of left-over cars, stacks of racers some one had carefully sorted, not so many lennys.

Mrs Cappy commented that seemed a little silly, like something wasn’t right in the distribution plan, but I disagreed. “Hopefully,” said I, “those will make it out to the pegs and give more people (kids) a chance to score some cool racers.”

And I had to buy a couple more N2O Colas, just because. All in all, a good day. 🙂

  • John in Missouri says:

    Thank you Kmart and Mattel!!!

    • kevin roche says:

well, did you get the 7 racers, yes i said i wasnt going to buy them and yes i caved..but the first time i went i only bought the 3 my son didnt have, but then i went back and they were still there..oh well, we will see what happens later

  • Hostile Takeover Banker says:

I am guessing all the case contents were correct this time???

    • Nascarfan says:

I personally in Utah didnt see any errors in case assortments.

But I did find an error Trunk Fresh with the ticket upside down

    • Brown Fury says:

Case assortments may have been correct, but the paint/decal quality was questionalble. I had a heck of a time trying to find a “perfect specimen” of any of them! I guess I’m just too picky…

      • MiaSenorita says:

I agree Brown Fury – I am usually not so picky.. but since I was buying for others at this event… it took me a Looooong time to find the good paint job ones. Lots of cracking and dust all over the cars inside the package.

  • Dale says:

Was in a Boy Scout training meeting until 4 near Orlando. As soon as I got out I GPSed Kmart and found one about a mile away. Still had 5 unopened boxes plus 5 almost full boxes. Got #76 for the grandson and all of the rubber tires for me. My Kmart back home was going to save me a poster. I was alone but EXCITED!

  • I’m happy everyone had a good time! 😀

Thanks Kmart for putting on these fun events and for the coupons!

Speaking of coupons…after the Cars event the kids and I looked around to find a toy to use the 10% coupon on. They ended up picking out giant Crayola sidewalk chalk. I went to the registers to pay and the cashier wouldn’t let me use the coupon on the chalk because it wasn’t a toy. 😕 The supervisor said it was fine and let me use it anyway.

  • bentaxle says:

Off to check for leftovers. Flu bug kept me away yesterday. Long live the aftermath!!! Cough Cough ughh!

  • iamspeed says:

Just how many cases does one person need there, Kevin?

    • Nascarfan says:

Those were for the event. Before they put them on the counter.

James on Carsthetoys forum took pictures.

I was harrassed and beatup on TFAD by a few people (and still am) for getting the leftover cars and cases last time and didnt get any extras this time.

I did say very loudly last time “Make sure you get what you want as the rest are going overseas” but some on TFAD dont think that was enough, but yet they could get tons of extras too. Let the hypocrites do that to themselves this time.

I got the cars we needed for people here locally who had to work and one person on TFAD out of state that had to work and left them for the ebayers that come in late.

I preordered all I needed for overseas people.

James went to get pictures and I handed out 30+ coupons of each version and business cards I printed up at work with Utah Collectors Club with the TFAD website to invite more Utah people to TFAD and the Utah Local Collectors Groups.

Helped people that we not “in the know” of what the new ones were, getting their stashs together and even helped sell a few haulers!

  • cars-in-your-eyes says:

Sounds and looks like fun was had. Wish I was there!
