Mattel Pixar Cars Checklist 2008: Cards, Sealed Boxes, 3-Packs & More

For collectors of the Mattel Pixar CARS 1:55, we have been through an interesting, amazing, infuriating and wonderous 18 months. We have seen a few highs, many lows and the strangest sight of all - hundreds of people who drive miles and miles through blazing heat, pouring rain, sleet and gloom of night - seemingly just to pay homage to empty retail store pegs. We have literally seen it all or perhaps more appropriately - spent it all. We have opened $3 CARS to see it skyrocket to $180 on eBay (Crusin’ McQueen) to a playset that gathered dust & moss and is now selling for $90 (Ramone’s) … we witnessed a minor miracle in the return of Flo’s Cafe and wonder if a day will come where we do not see a Buzz & Woody 2-fer Movie Moments everywhere.

Unlike most movie license tie-in products that completely disappear or is reduced to a trickle or merely lives on as 2-year party favors, the Mattel 1:55 CARS diecast line not only refuses to die but is the most infectious virus of all.

AND unlike many other toy lines where only the rabid collectors are left after 18 months - yearning for the obscure, the beauty of CARS is that every few months, a toddler becomes a kid and utters the magic phrase of ‘Lightning,’ or ‘Tow Mater,’ or does the Guido faint … and you see evidence on your shelves. Sure, there are some pegwarmers but eventually someone buys EVERYTHING … and once that kid first reaches over from his better-be-buckled-in shopping cart and grabs a CAR and the parent thinks to put it back, only to see that it that, hey, it’s just like the character from the movie, and it’s only $3.29 and from the picture on the back, only 13 more to complete the collection - why not - he or she is forever hooked. Just one more, just ten more, just one more playset, just one more Canadian card … and that’s absolutely it … a free CAR with a DVD format I don’t have a player for? Sure … and another bites the dust …

So, what’s in store for 2008?

Well 2006 was the half year of ‘we’ll make some quick money from the movie & DVD release’ and move onto the next project … only to realize that more and more people are buying … 2006, the year of, ‘PEOPLE LIKE IT, THEY LIKE US, THEY REALLY DO!!’

2007 was the year of mixed emotions from the winter of ‘WE SOLD OUT OF EVERYTHING? to ‘GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT’ to ‘LEAD, DID WE ORDER LEAD? TESTIFY TO CONGRESS? OH !#%$%* to finally the autumn of BACK TO SPEED.

So what does 2008 promise us?

In the early part of 2007, Mattel was still surprised they had a hit and just when they were about to launch an all out assault on our wallets, the lead recall hit so really, they only managed to rifle through our wallets for about 6 months … NOT that we weren’t willing to spend it the missing 5-6 months, there was just not much to buy … but now, we are in for it.

2008 will be the year of 3-packs, movie moments, shipments every month on the month, more exclusives, more surprises, the Speedway of the South set and presumably more playsets and the return of the other playsets.

To borrow a phrase from BACK TO THE FUTURE, Where CARS is going, we don’t need roads, the road to Radiator Springs is paved with green cash money.

We have Toyfair (the industry trade event) coming up in February so we should hear more very soon.

Of course, Mattel has launched a MINI ADVENTURES lines, perhaps for kids or perhaps they wanted to sell us another line where they didn’t have to keep such a careful watch on its color matching … though honestly, wrong colored rims seems to have stopped exactly ZERO people from buying the original Fabulous Hudson Hornet or Mario Andretti. :-)

So, what’s happening for 2008? Well, so far in the last month, stores were flooded with boxes A, B & C so for once, nearly everyone who wanted the new CARS (PCM Fillmore, PCM Hornet, Fred, & Dinoco Heli) got them and eBay prices reflect that. The new scheme of packing NEW NEW CARS 2 to a box seems a smarter idea and finally, we have a normalized stocking and buying of individual CARS on cards (note I did not say perfect - just more normal versus the $40 per CAR on eBay thing). However, just as things normalized for the individual CARS, the 3-packs and Pit Row Launchers have arrived in random order around the country - any on the West Coast? Hello, Mattel? And the Movie Moments is for lack of a better word, still stupidly packed (the last MM box contained TWO Sally & Crusin’ McQueen’s and ONE Rusty & Dusty - hello? Hello? Anyone see the clue train go by?)

So, after 18 months and 80+ CARS and almost 200 DIFFERENT CARS on cards … believe it or not, it’s only going to get crazier as nearly 80 CARS have already been announced and the YEAR HAS NOT OFFICIALLY STARTED YET!

So for 2008, you will have to plan carefully if you’re a completist as some older CARS on the WORLD OF CARS card (presuming WOC stays around for a full year) will only appear in one box or two so plan, shop & buy carefully …

If you wish to plot out what CAR will make its first appearance & in what box in 2008, a friend of 2-A-Day has thoughtfully provided a spreadsheet you can download or it’s also been added to our online checklist/spreadsheet. Though the downloadable spreadsheet is unfortuately now out of date as we explain in this post

… for those only buying NEW NEW CARS, your task won’t be any easier (think SPEEDWAY OF THE SOUTH set) but you have slightly less to worry about.

All of the 2007 & late 2007 post info is still here.

INDIVIDUAL CARS - 2008

Keep in mind that this list below is a projection and only accurate as of now - things may and will change so don’t plan too far ahead. A couple things seem certain, it looks like we have plenty of McQueen variants in stock all year and Mattel freakin’ loves helicopters!

If the CAR was displayed at Comic Con, it is shown below in the first sealed box that it appears in. If it was not shown there, we tried to go a screen grab from the film though it’s noted where we are guessing.

CARS that are already in the stores are not shown.

Also note - when Mattel announced the late 2007 and 2008 list, they gave the impression they were going to jazz up the previous releases with different cards (such as ‘Flashback’ or “Toy Story,” etc.) much like within the Hot Wheels releases, there are different cards and themes - why? Because it’s “fun,” or if you are slightly older than 3-years old, you might also cynically question why you are converting good real currency into Disney dollars … why? “Because it’s fun!” But ultimately, I believe Mattel realized they were just wasting time & money:

1) Competists would buy them anyway as long as Mattel changed the overall theme (from SuperCharged to World of CARS).

2) Casual buyers or who opened them could care less what it was called. They were not really going to buy another McQueen if you called it “Flashback” versus “World of CARS.”

3) It would have added cost and logistic headaches. Instead of just matching the CAR to the “license name plate,” now the factory would have to match the CAR with its theme card and while screwups would’ve meant completists buying more CARS (Do you have the McQ on a Toy Story card and the Flashback card?) … ultimately, it might’ve meant a portion of completists might’ve just given up because it was just too hard - why get them mad … there’s plenty of time to do this wacky naming & card switch & bait scheme a year or two down the line when sales might be slowing (what, me cynical? ;-) ) but for now, there’s plenty of money to be made by just re-releasing some CARS for the third or even fifth time!

And people are still snapping them all up.

So, while there are other lists out there still listing the names and possible “card names” and not CAR names, for now, let’s presume all of 2008 will be WORLD OF CARS and that this list is accurate as of right now but is subject to change at a moments whim when Mattel decides to change.

Keep in mind that Mattel has changed the design/theme/motif after about 7-8 months with the previous two designs so all these may or may not be released as WOC CARS. We could yet another design/theme and probably will before the year is over.

FEBRUARY 1 UPDATE:

Mattel has made some substantial changes to boxes E, F, G, H & J (there is not Box I). The big change is that for long time collectors, it’s simply not as great as first thought - instead of getting 10 of 18 CARS new or relatively new, we’re back to a few new items scattered in a box of 18 … in fact, Box G now will deliver two Bug Mouth McQueen’s instead of Marco the Jet & Trunk Fresh … why is this? Our speculation to the reason for the change is here

Below are the revised contents in the next 5 boxes. Just below that is a chart showing what’s in and what’s out …

WAVE 4 MOVIE MOMENTS

World of Cars: Movie Moments. Seven multi-packs are featured on the back - the top area features a detailed description of the CARS from that multi-pack - and below, 6 multi-packs are featured out of the rotation of MM packs available.

Like the Supercharged Series 2 & 3, each card features a random selection of 6 other MM packs so the backs are slightly different and as with the SC MM’s - there is still a paragraph blurb about the CARS.

NOW SHIPPING:
Dinoco Mia & Tia
Flea & Flik

dinoco.jpg

flea-flik.jpg

ALSO ANNOUNCED FOR 2008 as NEW MULTI-PACKS

(again, no older ones are retired - won’t rehash those to save space, I’m only listing the NEW Movie Moments packs)

(IN RELEASE ORDER - COMING NEXT)

Tow Cap (#4 - Rusty Cornfuel) & Gasprin (#70 - Floyn Mulvihill)

Leakless & No Stall (#123 - Todd “The Shockster” Marcus)

Tumble Weed Lightning McQueen & Doc Hudson

Fillmore & “Whitewall” Lightning McQueen

(probably the Lightning McQueen at Luigi’s but before Ramone changed him into Crusin’ McQueen?)

whitewall.jpg

Mario Andretti & his personal assistant Patti

(Presumably Patti …)

Race Damage King & Lightning McQueen

wrecked.jpg

And for now, we’ll assume the following multi-packs are just re-packaging of the CARS we already have:

Lightning McQueen & Kori Turbowitz
Chick Pitty (Bruiser Bukowski) & Chick Hicks

As with the single blister card CARS, none of the multi-sets seem to have been retired and ones that people are paying crazy prices for now are scheduled to ship throughout 2008 - not to mention MORE shipments of Sally & CM plus MORE Mike & Scully. There is a mention of the return of the Sarge/Fillmore 2-fer - surprised it’s only in one shipment though.

12-CAR CARRYING CASE with LAUNCHER

snotlauncher.jpg

snotlauncher2.jpg

As Mattel says, “Just turn the hub to send vehicles rolling from the gravity launcher!” They also promise heart-stopping fun though I do not hope they mean that literally as I have eaten way too much bacon in my lifetime. ;-)

Amazon also has it. It also comes with SNOT ROD.

NEW HANGING BLISTER MULTI-PACKS

PIT ROW RACE OFF (LAUNCHERS)

“Each includes a die-cast vehicle with launcher. It’s your favorite racers from the hit Disney/Pixar movie CARS, in the new Pit-Stop Racers Assortment. Each includes a die-cast vehicle with launcher. Connect the launchers to recreate Pit Crew Row, then send your character cars into high performance mode with a pow! Assortment includes Lightning McQueen, The King, Chick Hicks, Octane Gain, Leak Less and Nitroade.”

mat10743.jpg

There are four shipments scheduled of six per box (Sealed boxes end in A-B-C-D). They will probably retail for around $7.99.

PISTON CUP RACERS

While we have had about 10 of the Piston Cup Racers released so far, that leaves about 26 yet to be released (plus 7 mystery ones to total 43 as in NASCAR and as announced at the beginning of the movie).

Mattel has quasi announced a special set available online in June 2008 (more details at out post here) but my feeling is we will see smaller box sets (5 to 7 each) of the Piston Cup Racers before June 2008. Here are the protoypes they showed off at Comic Con along with screen snaps.

Thanks to the Blu Ray disc CAR FINDER, we know the names of the 36 racers …

  4. Fainted after reading this news.. more cars to spend money on @-@

Anyway, Thanks for the great news metroxing!

    [Reply]

  5. Just checked the ebay and some of the 3 car gift packs are already available.

For those ‘first-time-showup’ Cars in the gift pack (gold mia & tia, dirt track hudson etc), do you think Mattel will eventually release them in single pack?

I don’t want to add more duplicate King or McQueen to my collection just to get those Cars. But who knows that’s the tactic Mattel would use to get rid of some unpopular old stocks?

(METROXING: I’m just guessing of course but I suspect Mia & Tia will always be a multi-pack of some kind for the following reasons:

    a) Most people want both mia & Tia no matter the color.
    b) Splitting them as singles just makes less sales for Mattel as most non-completist will just buy one thinking they the “other” one is the same since the only real difference is their license plate.
    c) Packing will not be worth it when the only real difference is that their name on the license plate … it would be a lot of work to keep track of which is which for again, not more sales but possibly less.

So, there’s no compelling reason to split them up. Dirt Track Doc Hudson … yea, I could see him as a single - possibly adding some dirt on his side panels … to sell us again … as for the Pace Car - as reader “croukie” pointed out first, the back tail lights are yellow (or they forgot to paint them) instead of red as in the WM shipment so if you’re a completist, this is a full fledged variant - and yes, Mattel might say ‘oops’ but they’re saying it with a smile).

    [Reply]

  7. It’s acceptable as Mia and Tia would be in double pack, as long as we are not ‘forced’ to get another duplicates. But you know sometimes its quite a dilemma whether to buy or not when the ‘new’ Car is released, as you’ll never know would it be out of stocks if you did not take any actions :p

Talking about the oops, just now when browsing through the photos of the Toy Expo in you other post (or link here: http://www.davesbodyjewelry.com/pixar/album_8.html), that Kori Turbowitz displayed has side mirrors! What a great mistake Mattel has made.. Better they issue a replacement ’stickOn’ side mirrors for those who’ve purchased :p

(METROXING: Well, I guess if you add up the $.02 of metal they saved per car times a million - it’s almost real money :-) … and of course, who doesn’t think the next release of Kori will have mirrors?)

  8. Metroxing. I think Mattel did a good thing by putting 2 of the new releases in the first case instead of just 1. I did notice that Pit Crew Sarge only has one in the first case. My problem is that I don’t particularly like the “New” sign on the cards so I wait until I can find the cards w/o “New” on them for my collections. Have you heard if Mattel is going to continue putting this on the first case releases? From what I have seen this is not necessary because this line has very informed buyers. I saw alot of grandparents Cars shopping before Christmas with very detailed shopping lists. Cars buyers know what is new. I thought the “New” would end with the WM exclusives. Just wondered what you have heard.
    Happy New Year!

(METROXING: That’s an interesting point you bring up - when Pit Crew Guido is packed in a case 7 months from now, presumably, it won’t say NEW. I finally started going through my collection and checking the production dates and interestingly enough, many of the recent CARS that are available in NEW and blank versions were produced ON THE SAME DAY! So, if you’re cynical, you could say Mattel is purposely issuing them on both just to sell to completists since they know completists will buy both and as you pointed out for the general population, whether it says NEW or now is probably not meaningful to anyone these days - so my opinion is that Mattel will continue the dual versions because if nothing else, in 7 months from now, idiots like me … er, completists like me will buy it again just to have the card that is “blank.”).

  11. Hello, just wanted to share some info. In the Blu-ray car finder game, the orange bootcamp SUV is named Murphy and the pink SUV is named Frank “Pinky” Pinkerton.

(METROXING: Cool, thanks, I’ll update the 3-pack listing!)

  13. Stopped by my local Target (Lombard, IL) and picked up the first 3 3 packs. I like the Lightning Ramone, but it kind of seems like a cheap attempt of repackaging or repainting some old peg warmers.

They also had a bunch of the new Mini. The kids wanted to buy a couple, but I resisted!

  14. Also, with the 3-packs, can someone scan the back of it so I can see it?

(METROXING: I’m still waiting for my box - thought it was coming today but as soon as I get it, we will update our CARD BACK post. I hae seen one, it looks vaguely like the WM ones or Target holiday exclusives - sparse with just a few CARS on the back grouped together).

  15. I just bought a movie moments with Flo and Ramome and Flo has the Ferrari wheels on the front and the regular wheel on the back. Ramone looks the same. Does anyone know about this, it is a mistake, it has never been opened.

    (METROXING: Yup :-) )

  16. Metroxing,
While viewing screenshots of the Blu-Ray Car Finders List ( http://www.erinlynsworld.bravehost.com/screenshots.html ), I noticed 2 mistakes in the lists above.
-Cora Copter was changed to Kathy Copter when in fact, it should have been Cora Copper (Page 2 0f 13).
-Dexter Hover is in fact Dexter Hoover and he is the flag-waving pick-up truck at the race (Page 1 of 13).

(METROXING: Thanks for the updates! Will update our list ASAP. I was thinking Mattel was over-doing it with the helicopters and everyone will want the ‘flag man.” Thanks!)

    [Reply]

  17. No problem…I don’t want to spread rumors, but there is no way for me to confirm this one…I read somewhere that Dexter Hoover will have different color flags (checkered, white, red, yellow, green) for different stores (WM, TRU, Target, etc..)

Also, I’m pretty sure the Timothy that will be released will be Timothy Twostroke

(METROXING: Um, I kind of started that rumor about the flag guy, I was just having a little cynical fun in how Mattel could annoy us - I hope they didn’t read what I wrote :-) ).

  19. I found the new gift pack with Dirt Track Doc Hudson today but decided not to buy it because it bugs me that they didn’t make him dirty. Dirt Track McQueen is dirty on the bottom and so are the 2 cars that come in the Mini Adventures Dirt Track playset. It’s not worth it to me to spend $9.99 on one “new” car since I don’t think they did it correctly; all Mattel did was change the tires. It needs to be dirty too! Maybe if they put it on a single card I’ll think about it. I did pick up the pack with Flo and Lightning Ramone (and yet another LMQ). Why do you suppose they made Flo in 2 pieces? Somehow the first one we bought was stepped on so now my son says she’s sleeping because the roof is pushed in. By the way like you I think the Mini Adventures Cars and playsets are awesome. Thanks for always putting out great info; keep up the good work!

(METROXING: Others have mentioned that about Dirt Track Doc not being very dirt-y … I guess when mattel fixes Andretti’s rim colors, they can fix that … I have not looked that close at Flo’s but she is a lot of metal with the cool giant fins - perhaps that’s the reason …)

  22. Love the site and great info. Around me in the Phoenix, AZ area, it seems that the employees of WM & Target get to the boxes and the newer stuff doesn’t show up intil they’ve had their fill. I’m working with the manager of a local KB and hopefully she’ll help. If they stay in business that is. Keep up the good work.

  26. First of all - thank you so much for your site! It is such a great source of information.
We are in Omaha, NE and we are having the hardest time finding any new cars. I have a 5 year old son and the two of us have recently become obsessed with getting the whole collection. Since he is 5, they are all opened an well-loved. But he does want to have them ALL! We have hit all the WMs (6-7), Targets(4-5) & TRUs(2) in the area in the last week and the newest car we have found is Tom Race Official. Most of the time we leave empty handed. They have some of the new 3-Packs but I don’t see the point of buying 3 cars just to get the one that we don’t have. They also have the launchers and the minis but none of the individual cars are anywhere in site. Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to go as soon as the doors open? Are the employees pilfering the good ones? Is it possible that we just haven’t gotten the new cases here? Any advice or insight you might have would be appreciated.

(METROXING: You can check our “intro” post as a starter to figure out which is easier and which is tougher to find. As to your questions about the best buying strategy, it will actually vary from store to store - even if the stores are blocks from each other! Some stores are well stocked and employees/managers might actually look in the back to see if they have something while others might just glare at you. There are stores getting the latest box today - Box F as we speak, there are other stores getting Box A - believe it or not. That’s the craziness of this line, but after a while, you should be able to see which stores in your area tend to get stocked more quickly and correctly while others don’t care or simply have employees grabbing the best ones. So if you check the above post and the “What’s in Stores Now” post, both updated when new info arrives - that might help - good luck! :-) )

  29. i have what might be a dumb question: (bear with me, i’m new to “cars” collecting) are “Mini” and “Van” the names of the two lost tourists? if not, who are they? and whoever they are, have they been released yet? (i guess that’s three questions! sorry!)

    thanx for your help!!

(METROXING: Yes, the two lost tourists are named “Mini” & “Van.” (screenshots within this post above) … originally scheduled for summer 2008 but changes are coming - presumably we’ll kow in two weeks (US Toyfair) - will update as we hear anything).

  30. So all these new Piston cup racers are out in the States Now. Or arriving shortly. I am from the UK and would love to be able to import these extra’s direct from the source that many UK Ebayers are selling over here at. There looks like some 50 extra cars for me to get so would save a fair bit of cash if there was a company sending to the uk.

(METROXING: The ‘leaked’ ones on eBay come from HK “Out the back door.” With the impending release of Tow Cap & Gasperin, that makes 12 Piston Cup Race cars officially released (our post is here). That leaves @23 or 24 Race cars not scheduled for release - though unoffically, they (along with the 12 Piston Cup racers already out) will be re-released in the “Speedway of the South” set).
